Our residential architectural practice focuses on people: the clients who will live in the house. We seek to capture the deep essence of the home our clients are looking for, not through surface or applied details, but through their total experience of living in it. We talk to clients about how they live their lives; we find out how willing they are to explore new ideas; we listen to their aspirations. The architectural style that emerges is driven by these conversations, not by our stylistic biases.

Stuart Lathers Associates LLC specializes in the design of well-researched and rigorously-detailed buildings. Through adherence to the traditions of design and construction detail, our buildings not only withstand, but are enhanced by the passage of time. Throughout the process, we strive to maintain simplicity and continuity as fundamental guiding principles. Our work is founded upon the belief that even the most contemporary buildings can remain essential objects of human design and craftsmanship. Successful architecture is the result of intensive effort, personal responsibility, and wholehearted commitment on the part of all members of the project team. It requires active collaboration between the client, project design team, contractor, and all of the construction trades. Engagement in the process of construction practices is essential to this end. The organizational structure of our firm ensures direct principal involvement in all aspects of a project's development. This intensive approach allows greater attention to the details of architectural service, which results in buildings that are refined, unified, and consistent. We welcome the challenge of existing conditions. The object of renovation work can either be to allow the new to appear as if it has always been a part of the existing, or to design an addition with a discrete aesthetic that complements or even augments the original architecture. We have been involved in many renovation and expansion projects, incorporating contemporary and traditional approaches to architecture.
