Burr & McCallum Architects
Williamstown, MA Architects and Building Designers
October 24, 2014
We had long admired the work of this talented duo (Ann McCallum and Andy Burr) and had especially enjoyed the success they had creating the Porches Hotel in North Adams, MA, which had a decidedly Mid-Century vibe. When we bought our little 1950's Cape in Williamstown we knew they'd be the perfect choice to update the house and convert it into an idyllic weekend and Summer retreat. Our goal was to remain true to the building's original mid-century roots and add a contemporary vibe at the same time. Working with a very modest budget, Burr & McCallum came up with a wonderful (and affordable) way to add a shed dormer, open up the interior, create a master bath and utilize standard materials (like Pella windows and IKEA kitchen cabinets) that gave us the look we wanted, yet stayed within our agreed to budget. They helped us identify and work with a great local contractor (Vince Martel) and were shoulder to shoulder with us throughout the process. They even brought a colorist in to ensure we got the bright, fun, cheery palette for the house that we desired. It was a really great collaboration -- they were wonderful listeners and always found a way to take our input and ideas and make them even better. In the end we got exactly the house we had hoped for and we credit that to the vision, talents and thoughtful approach that Ann and Andy use. I'm pleased to say that even though the house is a renovation and very modest in size and scope, it's been featured in Boston Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens and elsewhere. We can't say enough good things about this firm and recommend them highly.
Crisp Architects

Working with Jimmy Crisp and his associates was a great and valuable learning experience that could not have turned out better than it did. Jimmy truly met, and in many instances, went beyond our expectations. The project, which was a complete gut renovation, went very smoothly and it did come in on budget with the exception of new items that were included after our original quote. Of course there were differences of opinions and long discussions about changes/desired outcomes and new costs, however, I would say that because of Jimmy's constant presence at the site, complete knowledge of exactly what was suppose to happen at all stages of the project and calm manner we escaped situations that could, at the time, have been less satisfactory. Jimmy, the associates and clerical employees of his firm are all a 10 in my book! My experience with Crisp Architects makes me believe that anyone seeking a great architect, backed by a most professional staff, could not do better than to choose Crisp Architects.

We've use Pam for two major renovations and numerous small projects, ideas and general help situations. The first was a total renovation and when we had to fire the GC, Pam stepped in and completed the work. The second major work, a lessor renovation 20 years later, is near completion and she and her team has been great to work with. We find her responsive, resourceful, and creative where we needed creativity. This has been not only in the design phase but also in participating and managing the actual implementation of the design. We've recommended her to friends and acquaintances many times.

My name is Brian Hazelton, I represent Wood to Stone LLC, out of Great Barrington, MA. With over 20 years in the profession and 8 years as a General Contractor, I have worked with dozens of architects. Zac separates himself from the pack with his conscientious designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and very functional. His talents go further then this, always adding intelligent feedback and critical thinking throughout the challenges of any given project. Wood to Stone has been lucky to work with Zac for multiple projects over the last three years. It is a pleasure to work with Zac on all levels, and I'm excited to see more of his ideals and efforts shown to the world.

GRD is David Potter. David is a joy to work with. He is responsive, pragmatic, and incredibly commercial, meaning he is not an "in the clouds" designer but able to tackle a design undertaking thinking through all the way through to fabrication. He is at home in the building material resources as he is in Conceptual Design or actual CAD work where he excels. Full package; Design, CD's, and construction monitoring. Having a very expensive, conceptual design experience prior to working with David, his pragmatic approach was an oasis we desperately needed. The best part of working with David is he offers ideas with no regret or client guilt trip when the client decides to pursue a different tack. He realizes the client has the ultimate call. David brought the same energy and responsiveness to add-on projects as he did to the original 5000 sf house project.

Shadiworks remodeled the top floor of our historic home, converting one dark and oversized bedroom into two bright rooms, with ample closet space, built-in bookshelves, and a number of really beautiful and useful architectural features. The designs were incredibly creative, making brilliant use of the space. Shadi also kept in close touch with us and the contractor as the work was ongoing, making things run incredibly smoothly. We are thrilled with the renovation!

Windows and doors were critical to the overall success of the new home Jim designed in Lenox. His creativity and attention to detail enhanced our working relationship. For example, linking visible glass dimensions among various windows and custom door heights allowed the overall design to really make a statement! I enjoyed the experience and look forward to future projects.
