Kate Johns Designs

Kate Johns is a brilliant architect and a lovely person. My husband and I have engaged Kate to renovate two historic homes for us over the course of about eight years and we are working with her now on an addition and outbuildings. She is extremely knowledgeable about the preservation of historic buildings, but also understands the way a modern family lives; her designs seamlessly bring together the past and the present. Kate also has a rare talent for listening to the clients' needs and then translating them into original and thoughtful design solutions. She is thorough, professional and responsive, and also a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend her.
Jonathan Wolfe Architecture + Design

March 14, 2017
This past year, I hired Jonathan Wolfe to design a partial kitchen renovation in my 1929 Westchester County, NY home. About 19 years ago, I completely gutted and renovated the kitchen using high-end custom cabinets, keeping the existing footprint. At that time, I did not have the foresight (or budget) to expand the kitchen. Almost 20 years later, with both children in college, I wanted to finally create that open feel that I had been wanting; creating a more inviting place to eat, cook and entertain. The one caveat for this project, however, was that my husband really wanted to keep the custom light maple cabinets, even though I was worried that they reflected a dated 1990’s look. What Jonathan did was he designed a way to connect the old with the new, creating a stunning new open kitchen and dining room. He designed the new archway that opened from kitchen to dining room to mirror the archways throughout the house. Then he designed a peninsula that connected the two rooms, keeping the traditional 1929 feel of the house, but making it more clean-line and open. While this was considered a “smallish” project, it was not an easy one – working on an almost 100 year home and making everything seemed as it all worked together was Jonathan’s absolute special magic. After we changed all the hardware (from brass to polished chrome), put in new lighting, added some new appliances, changed fixtures, etc, the new space and the cabinets work beautifully. We would definitely hire Jonathan Wolfe again for our next project, he is a real pro.

I cannot recommend Melissa and Jon of pulltab highly enough. They gut-renovated a loft for us, and not only are the results aesthetically beautiful, but the apartment fits us and the way we live and functions beautifully as well. Having lived here for a few years now, we can really appreciate how carefully and skillfully they analyzed our needs and met them. During the process, we received an extraordinary amount of personal attention. (They answer their own phones.) The renovation was expensive for us, but far from their biggest project, yet they always had time (and patience) for us. They really excelled at keeping our budget in mind and helping us to determine where money would best be spent. They possess that rare combination of talent and practical ability in equal measure. Additionally, they are two of the kindest, most conscientious people I have ever met in any field, and they treat everyone with respect and appreciation, which is reflected back not only on them, but on the project as a whole. They are really special, and working with them is a pleasure. We felt very lucky to have found them.

My wife and I have worked with them for 4 months on an addition in Harrison, NY and could not be happier. I have worked with 3 other architects in the past with ok results, so imagine my surprise when dealing with dsb's Kevin & Todd and seeing what great architects can do for a project. Todd and Kevin are the nicest guys but don't let their niceness fool you, these guys came from big firms and now have a small practice where they seem to be having fun. They are incredibly knowledgeable in all things technical and code but still manage to design beautifully. They constantly went the extra mile and seemed to love the work and the results show it. Bojan and Christine in their office were super nice too. I recommend them to everyone I know.

Have you done a gut renovation of an apartment from 2500 miles away? We did. The single decision that made the project a success and got us our dream home was working with TUG studios. From concept drawings to choice of contractors to final completion, they were available and responsive. Tom and Goil heard everything we said we wanted for our 2200 sq ft. triplex apartment. They even figured out a lot that we did not say and translated all that into a coherent whole that met with all our many requirements, from fabulous kitchen to LOTS of counter space to flattering lighting plans and color schemes. Most importantly, while not compromising on quality, they paid attention to our budget. The challenge was to make a dark and chopped up apartment with small rooms into a modern airy space. TUG's designs made really radical changes in the floor plan, moving the living room and kitchen from the parlor floor to the second floor and putting two bedrooms and baths where the living room and kitchen had been. If we had to do any kind of design or remodel in future, I would not do it without TUG.

Diversified Design Associates Architects, P.C.

I consider Diversified a design team, as well as a top sub-contractor, who not only identify the right construction solutions but understand a project from an architectural, engineering, and interior design perspective. I have employed Diversified to provide me with all three services, architectural plans, engineering work (including obtaining obtaining permits) and subcontracting work. Diversified does a good job in holding the subcontractors accountable that work is done well and on time. They ensure subs work in concert with one another so there are relatively few lapses in work as compared to other firms. I have not been stuck with a punch list that takes months to address. They address issues and problems right away. My level of satisfaction is so high, I have hired Diversified to work on two different houses. The first time I have ever hired a contractor more than once. The work on my first home was so well done and had such a positive impact on our curb appeal, the house was sold in 3 days! I employed them the second time when I needed a firm who could move quickly in making my fixer upper move in ready (they even helped me out in the aftermath or Super storm Sandy). While the work may be a tad more expensive, it was worth the extra investment to make sure the end product was well done. I absolutely recommend Diversified.
LEAP Architecture

July 28, 2015
LEAP designed our modern and green home addition. They handled much of the creative work on the project, as well as detailed renderings, bid consultations, and construction supervision. LEAP's work was very creative and responded directly to our needs. They found ways to get energy efficiency and modern design details into a "buildable" and cost-conscious project. They are humble, hardworking, and consistent. I would choose to work with LEAP Architecture again without hesitation.

Richard and Michael are fantastic to work with. They are very creative and highly professional. Our project is a complete gut job renovation of a 140 year old row house in Brooklyn. NC2 has come at it with complete enthusiasm from day one, and have stayed positive and focused even when we have hit rough patches. Our favorite part about working with them is their collaboration style. They do a good job of doing all the "hard work" behind the scenes, but they truly make us feel that we are part of the team. They take our feedback wholeheartedly, they are always ready to walk away from an idea they may really like if it doesn't resonate with us, and they are totally open and respectful to ideas we bring to the table. It helps that we have similar taste and style, but in general, they just have a great collaborative and respectful approach. They also have been very good to work with on budget management. We would recommend them for any jobs, large or small.

I cannot recommend this great family business enough! I hired them last year for a full kitchen renovation, and they were able to complete the project with no major issues. They were extremely professional and payed attention to every little detail, giving me the kitchen I have always wanted. The team works together so well, and they were so patient with me as I was picking out the perfect materials and countertop. I highly recommend them!
