Coffey Design Group

For us, Steven Coffey is nothing short of an answered prayer. My wife, Paula, and I bought a 1930-1940’s house in Lake Junaluska, NC in December of 2023. We knew it would need improvements when we bought it. Paula submitted a query via our neighborhood email group, asking if anyone knew of reputable architects, masons, etc. Among the responses was a call from Mr. Coffey, himself. He and Paula talked for about forty five minutes, discussing ideas, and he understood what we were hoping to accomplish . . . We had found the person we needed to help us make improvements to our house, bringing it up to current building codes, while maintaining/embracing its Craftsman style! Upon our first meeting with him at the house, Steve had a number of ideas and suggestions. We liked the direction he was going and his vision for the house, and agreed to team up and have him draw initial plans for the project. As is often the case when renovating an older home, its apparent list of needs grew quickly. The support under the floors upstairs was substandard and would require significant improvements. This involved taking the upper floor down to its joists and studs, adding support, leveling floors and moving walls. Through the entire process, Steve often came to the house to discuss issues and plans with us, and our contractor, ensuring a smooth process. Steve’s commitment to our project was wonderful. He was always only a phone call away to talk through any concerns we had. If you are considering a home renovation, we highly recommend Mr Coffey. Steve Coffey worked with us over several design iterations to provide what we were looking for. Our project was to nearly completely renovate the interior of a single family home and build out the unfinished basement. We liked Steve's presentations of his designs as well as the designs themselves. He educated us where needed. He incorporated requested changes in the designs and shared the revised versions with us. We appreciated that he used a computer aided design (CAD) system that made it easy to visualize alternative designs. He seems to be an expert/experienced architect and we were glad to get his referral through Houzz. Last, but not least, Steve seems to have fun working with clients.

Great guy to work with. My new addition to exiting building is in progress now when it is done it will be very hard to tell it was added on to old building. Looks great he has wonderful ideas to help get me out of my box of thinking.

Steve accepted our request to combine two 70s era back to back small bathrooms and closets to design an appropriate age in place master bath. He gave us several design choices and worked within our existing parameters to achieve a design that gives us both our wants and needs. He also provided several contractor suggestions and walked us through the initial appointments as well as fielding questions as they arose. His work became the foundation to move us forward and his fee was very reasonable. We highly recommend Coffey Design Group.

My husband and I are currently working with Steve Coffey on designing our dream mountain home. Steve has guided us along the way starting with grading the build site, navigating uncertainties (soil composition and other issues that have come up), to where we are now - working on the actual plans. Steve has listened to our ideas from the beginning and has communicated clearly along the way to be sure we both understand the vision for our home. Steve has been very patient with us as we have changed various aspects of the design to better fit our wants and needs.
