About Us

Mike Larkin attended the School of Architecture at the University of Kansas and received his BArch degree in 1987. His education included a year of study abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland and a summer study program near Sienna, Italy. Mike worked for a variety of commercial and residential architectural firms and moved to San Francisco in 1993 where he worked with Heidi Richardson Architects for three years. He has been licensed to practice architecture in California since 1995. Larkin returned to academia from 1996-1999 to study affordable housing and urban design at the University of California, Berkeley. He presently teaches an urban housing studio at the University of San Francisco. In 1999, Mike started his own practice which focuses on single family and multi-family residential design in Bay Area cities. Each client comes to us with a particular set of problems and opportunities. We see our mission as uncovering the clearest architectural solution which brings together the possibilities of both client and building site. Material and spatial qualities of the crystallized design should be self-evident. Pragmatic aspects of the architectural environment should reinforce this strong design concept.

We purchased an 1890's home in San Francisco during mid 2015. We did a very extensive remodel/update of the entire 3,600 sq ft residence. Mike did all of the plans and was intimately involved in the site work (including engineering ideas) as well as hardware selection and color items. We engaged Mike for this project as he had previously done work for us at our Napa Valley residence. We were very satisfied with both projects and would use him again on future projects. Mike is very responsive and actually "listens" to his clients which is a virtue somewhat difficult to find these days.

I have known Mike Larkin, principal of Mike Larkin Architecture, for about twenty years. Mike was the architect of the house I live in now, a major remodel of an early twentieth-century North Berkeley Edwardian completed in 2002. Recently, I am working with Mike again to finish and add livable space to our unfinished basement. The project is still in the permitting stage, and will hopefully be completed early next year (2018). Mike is an excellent architect. He is very knowledgeable about planning permissions and building permits in different cities in the Bay Area. He is a very good designer, listens carefully to client needs, and works very well with consultants and contractors. If Mike is working with you, as a client, you always have his attention. Mike has a wonderful aesthetic sense, and is equally good at space planning and detailing. With Mike, you can be assured of an excellent product whether it is a commercial or residential project, or a remodel, or a new project being built from scratch.

Commented: How big is the door area?The breakfast area door is 3' wide. The sidelites are 1'-9" wide each. The transom above is 1'-8" high. This is not a large space, the camera lens has distorted it quite a bit.
