Truly successful architecture creates forms that not only touch our deepest spirit, but evoke an immediate personal relationship to it. It understands that human beings are a paradox of two seemingly antithetical identities: a primal attachment to the earth, our animal nature; and a longing for perfection, what some might call the divine.
Too often, architecture has concerned itself with the creation of inspiring forms yet left people feeling disconnected. Or it has sought to give us comfort yet has induced us to boredom. It fails to understand that to be ultimately successful it must possess both the ability to inspire and connect us to each other and our place on earth.
We can give the profession credit for being one of the few areas of human endeavour that seeks to release human beings from the bondage to the mundane, that which is perpetuated by the ‘survival of the fittest’ culture we inhabit. But we will not get to where we want to go unless we are fully honest about where we are now. We will fail to liberate ourselves from our current paradigm unless we simultaneously engage both the spiritual and emotional dimensions of the human condition.
Doing so is not an intellectual exercise, for the intellect is derived from our primal nature, that part of us that has devised tools to increase our chance of survival, in this case, the mind. This is an exercise for the heart, for it is our heart that knows at once both our basic human urges and our spiritual nature. Nor is this about religion or churches. It is about our office building, our private residences, our public spaces and public buildings.
And so while we might avail ourselves of advanced technologies and materials, we must not let the technology get ahead of purpose. As architects of the built form, we have not only an opportunity, but a duty to answer this basic need through solutions that are not only beautiful and inspirational, but foster a strong connection to each other and to the earth, itself.
