Chris did a wonderful job on a major remodel of our 1970's beach house. We fell in love with the spirit and the feel of the original design, but it needed a serious update. Chris redesigned the open plan kitchen, and created a new Master suite in what had been a very awkward loft. The new design harmonizes so well with the original house that many of the elements we did not have the time (or money) to tackle still fit right in. He showed such enthusiasm for the project and respect for our ideas, he was a pleasure to work with, and we're very happy with the results.

Hello! We embarked upon a remodel of our house and interviewed multiple architects. Upon our meeting with Chris Cottrell, we knew he was a great fit both professionally and personally. He was knowledgeable on the process, articulate in how to guide us through each step, creative in his recommendations and respectful in his relationship management. Our project took over 18 months to permit, due to local policies and procedures. Many other families might have given up but we were determined and Chris was there and available throughout the entire process. He was dedicated to assisting us realize our goals with the remodel. The project took on my steps, first developing a schematic design. Next, moving the project through the city’s review (zoning, design and building department). Lastly, the build phase. As mentioned above, this was not an easy process and he handled it with expertise, knowledge and strategic insight. During these phases, he was always available for questions and provided thorough follow up. He continually managed his schedule and met deadlines. He also worked well to manage expectations of his client. He also went above and beyond to make recommendations for collaborating with other parties that would assist us in our project completion. This showcased his ability to work with others and the respect he had gained in the industry. Once permitted, he made himself available to meet with contractors and offer his guidance on design and build contribution. Overall, Chris was a delight to work with delivering his services with sincerity, professionalism, creativity and expertise, all with a positive attitude.

Residential new construction project. Designed and then consulted on construction of 2800 square foot home. Brought creative solutions to the project and then made sure they came to life in construction. Worked with many variables and curve balls thrown at them and adapted to each situation. We love our home every day, five years later. Would recommend Native Son Design without reservation.

I hired Chris Cottrell and Native Sun Designs to renovate my mid century home on Santa Barbara's Rivera. Our mission was to renovate and update a good portion of the interior common areas, kitchen thru living room, while paying homage to the unique architectural elements that were so prevalent in the modern home movement that was taking place in Southern California at the time of build. Chris was sensitive to the mission at hand and acting both as a team player and leader when necessary to drive the project forward, both on time and within budget. He inspired us to create, design and construct a project that left all our expectations met. My wife and I have been involved in numerous remodels during our journey and are familiar with all the pit falls that can occur. Thanks to Chris's stewardship non of these occurred. Chris uses a series of visual tools to walk you thru the spaces that you will eventually create thus saving you time, money and creating additional inspiration. Anytime I feel motivated to work on my current house or any future project the first professional I would call would be Chris Cottrell and Native Son Design.
