We are approaching the finish line of the build for our custom home designed by RAL. Our new house looks more and more like the cover sheet of our construction plans. A few years ago, we tasked RAL with a challenging project to utilize an existing foundation from the 1940s to create an artistic industrial modern ADA wheelchair accessible residence for our family. During the design phase, RAL listened to our needs and partnered with us in the design and our functional requirements. We utilized virtual reality (VR) to tour the house from the perspective of one being in a wheelchair. RAL helped us with lighting and interiors; creating living spaces for everyone in the family to utilize. Since the start of construction, RAL has been critical for ensuring the execution matched our vision of the design. The whole RAL team worked hard. They took our vision and turned it into an architectural piece that meets beauty and function.

I'm a licensed General Contractor, based in West Seattle, and have worked with Tim for several years. He and his team are top notch, award-winning, with consistent works worthy of gracing the cover of any architecture magazine. Tim designed a beautiful house and bunk house addition. A place with close and intimate connections to the garden and court yards.

Through the design process, set backs with King County, and the actual start of the project, they have been hands on and helpful walking through this with us. Their style is a perfect match with ours and am so excited to complete this house with them.

We are currently working with Rhodes Architecture + Light on the design of our house in Kirkland. This project has been more time consuming than we expected because we are subdividing the land before building a house on part of it. Tim has been handling the challenging short-plat process for us (communicating with the city, surveyors, civil engineers, planners, etc). Tim's and Josh's attention to detail is truly astounding. On the house front, his team's approach to designing a house really appeals to us - they spend a lot of time assessing our needs (esthetic, budget, practical) and understanding our lifestyle before determining every feature they choose to build into the house. Every time Tim presents us with a design, he seems to have a couple of alternate options in case the first one doesn't suit our needs. We essentially cold called Tim (had no referrals) after seeing one of his houses in Kirkland. It was essentially the best choice we made.

Tim is a true collaborator. He is detailed, clear, creative and respectful of budgets. This project was $1.6 M. He did such a great job we have him on retainer now to oversee a larger project. We own a home designed by Tim Rhodes and could not be happier. Tim is an amazing designer, our home is such a joy to live in with so much natural light and openness. With no formal living spaces it allows us to constantly utilize our entire house with no wasted and unnecessary space. The house has won many design awards which as the occupants we can say are well deserved. I would not hesitate to use Tim for a project and we actually plan to on a future project. Rhodes Architecture and Light designed the home I currently live in. It was built 12 years ago and was part of a 4-home project that received the award for AIA/Seattle Times 2001 Home of the Year, I was not involved in the original project as I did not purchase the home until 2005. When I toured the home that year, it took all of 10 minutes for me -- a very financially conservative person -- to decide that I had to live in the house. The home exudes an aura of clean, bright, modern and uncluttered design. There are no unnecessary frills, but there are many innovative design features and interesting details, and an overall sense of light that strikes everyone who sees it. It is the first time I have ever lived in a house that gives me a sense of joy waking up each morning. The design is innovative in the most positive sense: eight years on it has yet to bore me or feel tired. After moving in, I contracted with Tim Rhodes to design an outdoor structure, a large pergola, that was in keeping with the original design. Within a short time he developed a unique, cantilevered design that was unusual, but totally complementary to the existing house. It was a pleasure working with him as he clearly believes that houses should be living, evolving dwellings, and he is able to meld the vision of the client with his own exceptional design insights. Although Tim Rhodes has definite design principles, the client experience is one of collaboration. He always responded to questions and incorporated suggestions without worrying that his design was being compromised. If you review the projects on the Rhodes Architecture web site, you will find a wide variety of designs, but it is also clear that they are all guided by a consistent vision of what constitutes a livable house and how everyday materials can be applied in sometimes surprising ways to provide a truly satisfying built environment.

I hired Tim several months ago to design my new home on Lake Sammammish in Bellevue, Washington. We are about half-way through the design process now, and I have been extremely impressed with what Tim and his associates have delivered so far. When I began looking for an architect, my first goal was to find an experienced architect whose aesthetic was in line with mine. Tim's contemporary home designs are stunning but also complement their natural environments without overwhelming them; that's perfect for the Pacific Northwest and perfect for me. I was also looking for an architect who could help guide me through the process of building a home. I've never had a custom home built before, so I was worried I'd find the whole process a bit daunting. Fortunately, Tim's extensive experience with design, contractors, building, permits, and the rest of the process have been a boon and have made the process both understandable and fun. The design Tim and his associates have created for me is stunning. We are currently preparing for the permit process now and hope to begin building in the Spring. I feel lucky that I found Rhodes Architecture & Light and can't wait to complete my home with him.

Exceptional is an understatement when describing Tim Rhodes! I sold a home 14 years ago that a builder had for sale and Tim was the architect. It had been an AIA Home of the Month. It was a spectacular design with a lot of glass, light and wood. The builder asked me to represent him and the builder went on to build with Tim Rhodes and the homes they did were incredible, one went on to be the first spec home in 47 years to win the AIA home of the year. It was an incredible home. When you work with Tim, it is a great collaboration, with your ideas, his talent and complete cooperation. His designs are beautiful, pure art. His homes really live well, with inviting floor plans. I would rate him a 10, without any hesitation. My wife and I have a difficult lot to build a house on due to its irregular slope, steep in some areas. In order to have a view of Puget Sound the main floor had to be as high as possible. Before hiring Rhodes Architecture + Light we met with a few builders who do their own design work. They were unable to come up with an acceptable way to achieve the floor height we need. This drove us to look for an architect. We selected Tim Rhodes because we liked his portfolio of completed projects and after meeting him felt we could trust him to do the job. Tim came up with a very clever design that incorporated all our requirements. We've been living in the house 14 months and are quite pleased. Tim's design gets many compliments from first time visitors. The only reason I didn't give Rhodes Architecture + Light five stars is cost estimation and control. Our construction cost ended up 40% above my desired target. To be fair this is common when building a house.
