Still in the process of completing a home, but not a fan of the panelized construction process with SD. Most builders in my area were not willing to bid on the project because 1) it was unclear what the framing package included, 2) the builder makes less money for the same time commitment, and 3) the builder inherits responsibility for any defects with no clear avenue to recover the costs of repair. If a builder buys lumber, prehung doors etc from his usual supplier, he has a process to resolve issues. If SD ships them from a third party, that process is unclear. SD was very helpful during the first two phases, designing the house and getting the building permit. However, before you make a big commitment, (before Phase 2 in SD parlance) get the list of builders in your area that SD recommends. That list may change by the time your plans are approved, but there should be 3 builders who would feel comfortable bidding on your project and you would feel comfortable working with.

For thirteen years we had been researching ideas for a house to build for the 10 acres of land we had purchased on San Juan Island. We had spoken with many architects over the years and consulted with a relative whose claim to fame was his work with Frank Lloyd Wright. Nothing seemed to fit until we found Stillwater Dwellings. Immediately we could see a Stillwater design in place on our property. We were thrilled! My husband is a designer in the manufacturing business and works with architects and engineers. The first time in talking with Kaveh, Stillwater's Senior Sales Representative, my husband was amazed by his technical knowledge and experience in building. We were more than confident we would be able to proceed with them knowing any questions we might have now or later in the building process could be addressed. Both Kaveh and Matthew, Stillwater's master architect, have surpassed our expectations in listening to our needs and making them possible in design and practical application. During the building process Matthew has been available with design advice that usually saves the day and Kaveh fills in with understanding when needed and both with much appreciated humor! Working with them has been exceptional and fun! We met our permit deadline with time to spare and Stillwater was dependably there whenever unforeseen changes were needed. Best of all, as our house unfolds step by step we are constantly surprised by the design details that make such a difference. The placement and size of windows and doors, the play of light in rooms, the way the environment out is captured in, one flowing into the other. When people walk into our house for the first time, they use the "love" word. Now a once cherished piece of land is called home. We are grateful to the Stillwater team for making it possible! My wife and I researched companies who specialize in contemporary homes for more than three years before choosing Stillwater Dwellings. We had several criteria....very contemporary, very high quality, effective use of space (since we were downsizing considerably), energy efficiency, and a home that would not only allow us to enjoy our beautiful outdoor surroundings, but one that would "bring the outdoors in". This meant not only lots of glass, but windows that were strategically placed in order to provide the feeling of continuity from inside the house to the outdoor surroundings (an important living space, in our case!). We could not be happier with our Stillwater home. The entire staff was highly professional, responsive to our slight design modifications, and helpful in every respect. Their prices are fair, and the amount they quoted us did not change by even one cent. We were thoroughly impressed with the entire process-- including follow up-- and can recommend them without any reservation whatsoever.
