We recently purchased a property in the Zilker neighborhood and knew it was a property that would require significant renovations or a new build. We began researching architects in Austin and found Stuart. After reviewing some of his projects from the website, we were both drawn to Stuart's design style. Once we connected with Stuart and was able to learn more about his approach, and his knowledge of local building codes and the City of Austin permitting process, we knew we found the right guy for our project. The process started with an evaluation of our project whereby Stuart came out to the site and afterwards spent a few hours putting together a few preliminary drawings as well as a rough budget for us so we had some guidance around the issues facing our project. Given we wanted to stay with a one story structure, and had a heritage tree and also several protected trees on the site, we knew we needed someone knowledgeable about navigating the permitting process with the City of Austin so we wouldn't face unwanted delays. After deciding to move forward, we really like the structured stages that were outlined for us including the design phase and ultimately construction management and oversight that Stuart handled as part of our project. Once we began, we met every week, initially at Stuart's office, then once construction was underway, we met at the job site. Stuart was very hands on through the entire process and would always let us know ahead of time what decisions needed to be made in terms of appliance selections and interior finishes. He was able to guide us on our choices and provided input when the choice wasn't clear for us, essentially being marriage counselor at times. He kept us on budget through the entire process, even when change orders involved adding a screen porch early that took most of our contingency! While there were certainly issues that came up through the project, Stuart was always very available to address any item. The fact that he provided oversight through the construction process was also very welcomed. In the end, the comments that we consistently get from neighbors and visitors to our new home are about how they love the 'scale' of our house. Stuart found a way to maintain some the original structure as a part of the original design but add the square footage that we needed, and those existing elements provided a 'nod' to the original structure. We would highly recommend Stuart to anyone considering a residential design project in Central Texas! Chris & Melody Harman

My wife and I hired Stuart Sampley Architect for our new garage apartment project because of his excellent reputation and knowledge. We are glad we did. He successfully navigated our project through the complex and time consuming process of the City of Austin development process and did it ahead of schedule with no surprises. During design he proposed alternate solutions, looked for ways to improve quality, listened to and implemented our input and monitored his own and his consultants work to ensure accuracy and quality. He professionally coordinated our project from the initial land survey to the certificate of occupancy. During construction, he expertly directed and monitored our builder ensuring the quality of the work and that we got what we paid for. We are completely satisfied with Stuart and our new residence and were impressed by his keen eye for detail! Stuart ensured that our project was completed on time, on budget and that the quality of the work was exceptional. We couldn't be more pleased with our project! We highly and sincerely recommend Stuart Sampley Architect for anyone who needs an architect in central Texas.
Thanks Stuart!!

Aside from his top notch design skills, what really separates Stuart from the typical architect, is his intimate knowledge of best practices on the construction side. This allows him to efficiently and effectively manage the GC and construction process, all at a manageable rate. It helps avoid builder/homeowner conflict, helps avoid and solve problems, and ultimately saves money. Just an excellent process all the way around. I've hired him for 2 separate projects now!

Hired Stuart to design a complete gut remodel of "that 70s house" - a $350,000+ job. Stuart is amazingly attentive to detail, very honest, profrssional and knowledgable and gave us an estimate and helped us work with the contractor to come in exactly on time and on budget. Bam. Thanks Stuart.

Stuart was so great to work with. I am not sure how people design and build without him! He was patient with us as we were trying to figure out what direction we would ultimately go in while gently guiding us in the right direction. His construction management process is worth every penny.. in fact, he should cost more when I think about all the time and headaches he saved us in decision making as well as catching things not done to his drawings onsite. His sense of humor made it fun and his expertise made the end product beyond our dreams. His budgeting process is clear, upfront, and detailed. He was available quickly when we called/emailed/texted. We just built the house of our dreams and had a great time doing... who knew that was possible?!?!!

I entrusted Stuart Sampley to be my architect for a dream house that I wanted to build. I had worked with Stuart previously in 2008 on an extensive remodel of a small 1960's ranch house that I purchased shortly after moving to Austin. Guests were always impressed with the new layout, the materials and the overall design aesthetic. We'd stayed in touch over the years and he was the obvious choice for the new project. There are three things that I think set Stuart apart from the majority of architects: Process, budgeting and costing accuracy and continued attention to detail during the build.
Stuart has a non linear process. All of the details do not need to be finalized all at once. There is a specific timeline where certain sections of details are needed. I really appreciated this because you only focus on what you need to focus on at that time. This also allows extra time for items further down the line like colors, fixtures, finishes, etc...
Stuart's budget spreadsheets are a dream for a numbers guy like me. In addition to every section being defined and quantified, because he refines his process and costing after each finished project, the estimates are pretty much spot on.
HIs attention to detail once the build starts is the exception rather than the rule these days. He is on site multiple times per week to ensure critical details are being executed to the plan. Even with the excellent builder I had, Stuart's oversight was helpful and gave me additional peace of mind. An added bonus is that Stuart has excellent relationships within the city government. Multiple times bureaucratic red tape threatened to impeded or stall the project and multiple times Stuart rectified the situation.
I would highly recommend Stuart to anyone who is considering him

I hired Stuart to design an addition and remodel of a 1950's bungalow in the Zilker neighborhood. Stuart's design process was organized and also very simple. This simplicity, and Stuart's knowledge of the City, made the permit process with the City almost painless. Can anyone else say that? Stuart also impressed with assisting with budget management throughout the build. His budget projections were extremely conservative and realistic, which kept me in check. Stuart also is extremely knowledgeable with current trends in building and mechanical technology which was helpful in my decisions regarding things such as insulation and HVAC. In the end, all of these things helped me end up with a house I am very happy to own.

We hired Stuart to design and manage the build of our south Austin modern farmhouse in 2013. We knew the design would be spot-on. What surprised us was the level of advocacy (between us and the builder) and his budget mastery. We were very clear on what we wanted and had a tight budget … Stuart helped us fully vet the design and navigate the budget waters to truly get the end product we wanted. His pre-construction design process was extremely thorough, his budget excel spreadsheet was impressive and a valuable interactive tool, his use of dropbox, his ability to keep the build process in spec, to catch and address problems … all of these things added up to a very good process and end-result.
This was our first ever new construction and architect-design project (after 10 years of AIA tours, we knew we would do this one day). We hesitated, briefly, on whether to just sign up for design services or to add the construction oversight to our arrangement with Stuart. The construction oversight that Stuart provided totally paid for itself … we would have made all sorts of mistakes without his guidance.
And we love, love, love this place. Thanks, Stuart.
