About Us

Studio IQL is the result of 20 years of collaborative design work. Named for our office address, we have exploded beyond our walls and become a network of highly talented teams. We are: Architects, Interior Designers, Structural Engineers, Contractors, Fabricators, Painters, Sculptors, Furniture Makers, Glassblowers, Organizers, Installers, Cabinet Makers, Ceramicists, Landscapers and Parents. The studio designs public spaces that people can make their own and private spaces that resonate for the people that live in them. Every project is a bespoke process. We invite our clients to bring their idiosyncrasies and personalities to the process . Val Nehez, the founder, principal designer, and creative director brings a deep commitment and understanding of what it means to create environments that evoke a profound connection and reaction. Following art history and architecture-focused study at Bard and Vassar Colleges, Val’s design career started in earnest when she designed, branded, owned, and operated two restaurants in New York's Hudson Valley. Val’s successful endeavors as a restaurateur led not only to two favorable reviews in the New York Times travel section, but also to a cookbook, published by Simon & Schuster.

Studio IQL was receptive to our needs and clearly knew what they were talking about when it came to everything that went into the designing process. Making sure high traffic areas had sturdy materials and also taking acoustics into account was very impressive.

From the day I showed up at their office with my pages and pages of torn magazine pages to the completion of our project they were an absolute pleasure to work with. Studio IQL has a sharp eye for color and composition and a gift for integrating old and new pieces. Their keen sense of style and space has brought to my home both visual impact and joy of living.

We were blown away by Studio IQL when we used them to style and install our house. We worked with them to design our living and family rooms. We put all the items in place and then they came in and arranged all the shelves and artwork, using our pieces. It really pulled everything together and transformed our space. We will definitely use them again!

Studio IQL went above and beyond my expectations. They took a holistic approach to look at how we lived in our home and what we really needed. They even brought in and worked with an organizer to purge through 15 years of three kids and life. When the new space was finished everything had its place. Our house was an original 1940's masterpiece in desperate need of an update. Every inch of their custom work was thoughtful, impeccable and spotless. I love my home and everyone who visits loves it too. I never want to leave. I absolutely love my kitchen , home office, zen room, fireplaces, high ceilings, wall of glass looking onto a garden....

We hired Studio IQL to design our high end plumbing showroom, Flow Bath + Kitchen Design Studio. I met with a few designers and once meeting Val, I knew she really got me. I wanted to do something new and excited, and Val and her team worked hand in hand with my husband and I to make our dreams come true. Everything is just perfect and I have been told time and time again that I have one of the nicest showrooms not only in this country, but in the world. We loved working with this fabulous team and would recommend them to anyone for a residential or commercial space.

My new apartment was designed by Studio IQL. It is in a three unit building they designed. We will soon have a coffee shop on the ground floor. (Which they are also designing) Each apartment was immaculate with beautiful clean details. It was hard to pick which one out of the three I wanted. I enjoy my kitchen every morning.

Val and her team helped me with the renovation of my historic house (one of those in the photos). They designed an entirely new kitchen/dining room that responds to the history of the house but also feels crisp and contemporary. The addition of a fireplace was particularly complicated, but it looks as if it had always been there and also works perfectly. They also helped me navigate through upgrading or replacing all the mechanical systems, bathrooms, and even putting back in period-appropriate windows. In addition, Val and her team are 100% reliable and trust worthy (which is SO important) and they love to laugh, which made this long project a pleasure!

With an historic home, a designer must marry two priorities: preserving the character while updating the design. No small feat. Val's design work was outstanding and her work style was engaging, inspiring and comfortable. I'll definitely work with her again soon.
