Tom Hurt Architecture

I hired Tom Hurt Architecture to design my project at 201 Bulian Ln in Austin, TX. Tom and Ricardo were amazing from the conceptual phase to the construction administration. The project turned out very nice. They are very creative on using new materials and alternative solutions. I definitively recommend Tom Hurt and I will hire him again for my next project in Austin.

We hired Tom Hurt to design our residence and could not have been happier with his amazing work. Our family and needs have grown since we moved into our first house that Tom designed for us, so we have bought another lot in Austin and have engaged Tom to design the next one. Our daughter loves this house, and her room, so much that she cried when we told her we will be moving. But she understands now that Tom and his team will be designing our next house, and she is super excited. She recently wrote a note to Tom that said, “If you can draw out our whole house you must be an amazing drawer (sic). Thank you for disining (sic) our great house and for our next one. Love, The Rash Family”. Having known and worked with previous architects, I can say that Tom is one of the most talented in the field. Tom is not only very professional, he’s easy to communicate, relate and work with. Tom was able to take our ideas, design an amazing residence as well as a secondary dwelling that serves as an income-producing property, and we stayed within our budget. We are repeat customers and are excited to be working with him again now.

I worked with Tom on two projects: a HQ for a local non-profit and a remodel of our dock. In both cases, Tom was a real pro - he was creative yet practical. He never did 'cool things' just for the sake of doing them, regardless of cost, functionality or reliability. He designed the way I would if I had the talent to do it. In the case of the non-profit, he had a big heart and helped us get the project done within our budget even though he spent more time than he billed us, and he never made us feel like a charity.

I would highly recommend the Tom Hurt Architecture team. We have worked with Tom and his team on several projects and they have always come up with ideas and design that exceed our initial concept of what the project could be. They know building materials — the positives and negatives of each — and are able to discuss how material choices affect other aspects of the design. They asked questions to help make sure their design matched our needs. In particular, they pay attention to light and how they can bring more natural light into interior spaces. We love the Outpost/Office space they designed for us and are now working with them on another project. Highly recommended.

We are currently working with Tom Hurt and his team on a 1200 square foot addition to our 1950s home. Prior to engaging Tom as our architect, we had the opportunity to live in a home of his design and so loved our everyday experiences of the space and the beautiful use of natural light and inventive materials. Our addition kicked off construction a few weeks ago and we are looking forward to living in a new space that is designed for socializing, relaxing, working and appreciating the incredible views that surround our home. The design is modern and eclectic and carefully crafted to fit within our construction budget and reside within our unusually shaped lot. Tom and his team are visionary, practical and inventive in their craft. We feel so fortunate to be working with them and obviously highly recommend their work. We hired Tom Hurt Architecture to design the conversion of an old house from a 4-apartment dwelling into a renovated house with a modern addition. We really enjoyed his creativity and professionalism. Throughout the process, Tom and his associates were very respectful of our goals and ideas, while improving upon them. His professional background in urban architecture coupled with his experience in historic areas appealed to us, and we were not disappointed. There were several tricky issues including how to build the addition around a heritage tree and the addition of a rooftop deck, and Tom had great suggestions and design. We ended up with a product of which we all were pleased and proud.

I have done four projects with Tom Hurt Architecture. A build from scratch back in 2006, another build from scratch in 2012, an extensive remodel in 2012 when we moved to a different city, and a huge "to be built" project on a gorgeous piece of land in Austin that's still in early days. Tom and his team are easy to work with, over the top fair in their pricing, and they have a great approach. The design speaks for itself, in my opinion. Since I've designed four houses with Tom, and built three of them, I can speak with some authority on his level of professionalism, design expertise, and willingness to be flexible and accommodating while focused on the really important issues. Probably the highest praise I could provide - as my wife and I were moving back to Austin, I had an opportunity to buy back my 2006 project as it had just come on the market so we have plenty of time to start and complete the next project (no discredit meant to THA, but I hope that this is our last build for a while). I did that without hesitation, and am pleased to be back in the first house project Tom and I did together. Then we turned around and engaged Tom to finish off the hardscape and lower patio designs that were always intended (but not funded) during the initial construction.

Tom Hurt Architecture (aka Hurt Partners) did a fabulous job on our addition. The house was built in 1933 and had been updated in late 90's, but we needed more living room. The modern addition worked seamlessly with the original Tudor design. Much regard was taken for details-- like windows, molding and the original wood floors flowing into new elements. Well placed windows opened the up the room to create a feeling of being in a tree house. All who entered the space raved about it. The exterior utilized composite shingling as a siding. We recently sold this house and know that the addition was an integral part of the house's appeal.

Tom Hurt Architecture remodeled our very dated '70s home in central Austin into a contemporary treasure 10 years ago. They creatively and cost effectively tackled no small challenge of a house on a very pitched lot with a number of structural complications. Their work to bring natural lighting into spaces is most thoughtful. One should expect very special touches and unique ideas when working with Tom Hurt Architecture on a new project or even a simple addition or remodel. In fact, we came back to Tom Hurt Architecture for a small addition in 2014 -- who knew that a mudroom and storage space could be so beautiful and inviting? Most importantly, they listen, hear and execute to a client's specific direction -- in a unique way with delightful surprises.
