Macallan Penfold Chartered Architects is an award-winning architectural practice based in Hampshire. The practice has been operating for almost thirty years and has established a reputation for delivering design excellence and innovation to clients across the public, private and subsidised sectors, including specialist education buildings for art, science and music, sports and community halls, libraries, restaurants, and performing arts facilities. We have won multiple local design awards and have been shortlisted for the RIBA Download Prize on three occasions. Such a consistent and rigorous approach produces creative design solutions that are not only intelligent and responsive, each with a distinct identity, but which add real value. Our success has been achieved by gaining a thorough understanding of each individual client’s needs and aspirations, an appreciation of the specific drivers of each project, and a detailed knowledge of each building type. We pride ourselves on the quality of service we provide: we think laterally and are particularly adept at resolving difficult challenges. A high level of repeat business serves as a testament to the strong relationships we forge with our clients and the quality of our work. The expansive portfolio of buildings designed by the practice stand the test of time and have successfully satisfied and exceeded the expectations of our clients’, making a positive contribution to the wider community that they serve. They are being used and enjoyed by large numbers of people every day, whether as places to live, to work, to learn, to collaborate, or simply to socialise and relax.

Since qualifying as an architect some twenty years ago John Moran has enjoyed a varied career working with some of most well regarded design studios in the UK. He spent eleven years with Dixon Jones and became an associate there. During that time he played a significant part in their most prestigious projects including The Henry Moore Institute, The Royal Opera House and The National Portrait Gallery. He later spent five years working as a Project Director at Adjaye Associates where he led the delivery of the Idea Store projects in Tower Hamlets, London. He also ran several small scale domestic projects gaining the critical skills in dealing with small builders and domestic clients. More recently, following a move to Bath, he worked with Stubbs Rich and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios on a variety of commercial, education and residential projects. This has given him a wealth of experience in all aspects of architectural design and the construction process. He has taught at the University of Sheffield and the University of West England. John Moran established his own practice in 2009. The practice is focussed on small and medium scale projects in a variety of sectors. His approach to architecture strives to find the best solution to the client’s needs within the resources available; to make economy of means a guiding principle both in terms of the design and the environment; to create contemporary architecture in tune with its times; and finally to seek out that gem of delight and inspiration that lies within all projects large or small.

Working with clients, helping to give form to dreams and aspirations, is a privilege. I believe there's nothing trivial about the practice of architecture which, like music and painting, has the potential to be both healing and nurturing. The starting point for a commission may simply be the need for extra room but I think there is always an opportunity, however humble the brief, to fashion and organise spaces into something special in order to bring pleasure each time they are encountered. That is part of what architects can bring to the building process. Although I have undertaken a wide range of commissions, I work primarily on the design of houses often including the layout of gardens. This includes alterations to existing properties including to listed buildings and also new build. Bricks and mortar, steel and glass, straw and timber; I use an eclectic palette of materials as seems appropriate, striving to make the most of natural light in order to bring interior spaces to life. Once a design is developed, a tremendous amount of effort is put in to the detail, getting things to 'look right' and lift the spirit. I hesitate to claim that my work is deeply 'green' as there is always an environmental impact associated with building and much false rhetoric surrounds it. Nevertheless, I do place great importance on such issues and consider them in the broadest sense when undertaking the briefing process, striving to balance my own concerns with the wishes of my clients. I currently undertake commissions throughout Dorset and Wiltshire but do take on projects further afield if conditions suit all parties.
