I have only terrific things to say about Joel Tanner and the team at SMPL. Prior to meeting Joel, we had been through 2 architectural designers and we just were not happy with the experience. We are in the renovation business so we are a little pickier than most when it comes to architectural design! When we first met Joel, he got it right away. It didn't take him long to understand our vision and to create a model and layout of what we were looking for. We had many iterations throughout the process and when we finally arrived at the final product we were thrilled. From concept to design completion, Joel was patient and professional the entire time. During the process, we had to go through the committee of adjustment and Joel was exceptionally prepared and clearly communicated our case to the committee (which we won). And during the building process, he was always available to answer questions. We have very high standards in our work and it was a pleasure to work with Joel who's very detail oriented and shares a commitment to excellence in his work. He's a pro's pro. Its a great start to a relationship with a contractor when he/she shows up on time. That's the first sign when things are looking good. I used this company to design a front porch and garage for my home. They were recommended by a friend to me. Joel was very easy to deal with, the process went smoothly and he was always available to answer questions as they arose.

I originally found SMPL Design Studio through Instagram. I was really impressed by Joel’s renderings and eye for modern design. My wife and I hired Joel to take care of the architectural drawings for our 1960’s back split home remodel and addition project. During the initial site visit Joel had many great ideas regarding floor plans and layout. We sent Joel a few pictures of modern homes we liked and within a couple days he had renderings for our home. He hit the ball out of the park with his design and exceeded our expectations! Joel and his team helped us through the entire process of zoning applications, committee of adjustments and ultimately obtained our building permits. Change orders are inevitable in the construction industry. Just before we were going to submit our drawings we added underpinning to the project. Joel was able to get the underpinning details and layout drawings done in a timely matter and submitted with our original package for building permits. This was our first time working with SMPL Design Studio and will not be our last. I would highly recommend SMPL Designs for architectural services!

Working with Joel and his team has been a great experience. Joel designed our house and managed everything from architectural plans, getting permits from city and region, and providing urgent support needed during the construction phase. He was very much involved with the project from the get go and guided us through the process. Provided us some good contacts of tradesmen. Nevertheless, you need to do your homework and quote/quality comparisons. Joel is quite approachable and in spite of his busy schedule, is always responsive. Keep it up SMPL team!

After meeting with several designers, Joel stood out for a few reasons. 1) He manages the permit process (major difference and time saver relative to other designers), 2) his brand of West Coast Modern tailored to our specific requests, 3) Flexibility of Service, 4) Competitive Pricing. Initially, we were doing a Reno, which grew into a New Build, which then evolved into Dream Home bungalow. It was a journey and Joel was cool with us learning along the way. The best part about working with Joel was getting on the phone and doing part of the design live by GoToMeeting, where we got more accomplished in 1 hour than we would have otherwise done in 1-2 weeks of emails and phone calls.
