Specializing in high-end residential interior design, we work with clients in the Greater Boston area, all over New England and of course wherever else our clients take us! For us the design process begins with listening to the story you want to tell with your space. It’s about picking up that thread and running with it. It’s about architectural details that bring a room together, and a love of materials that make a room special. It’s about balancing trends by being current but not cold; adding vintage without looking stale.

Integrating the artistry of interior design with custom handmade rugs & tapestries, Joanne S. Hurd, CKD, CBD, has been designing custom rooms, furnishings, and accessories for important spaces in our homes since 1977. For Ms. Hurd, the crux of the matter IS the art of blending function, form, and finish to create your distinctively stylish room. In a creatively responsive, personalized, and custom-tailored approach, a wide range of design services is flexibly orchestrated to suit the particular needs of each homeowner, architect, builder, or other collaborative designer. "Hand-knotted art fresh off the loom", J.S.HURD rugs & tapestries embellish the compositions of our rooms and our views. In a wide range of styles - Arts & Crafts, Classical, Art Deco, Transitional, Tribal, or Contemporary - each rug, whether called upon to complement a floor or a wall, can be either customized from our many collections in size, pattern, or colorway or newly created from your own inspirations. With over 1400 yarn colors to choose from, our made-to-order rugs are hand-knotted by weavers in Nepal and showcase top quality craftsmanship and care. In addition, all our rugs are certified by GoodWeave International, a global non-profit foundation dedicated to eliminating child labor in the rug and carpet industry and to providing rehabilitative and educational opportunities to at-risk children and their families. The GoodWeave label on our rugs offers the best assurance that no illegal child labor was used in the production of your rug.

UBLA believes in working with our clients to provide the highest quality design and construction administration services. Our process begins with a client interview to understand the goals of the client, and is then followed by a thorough assessment to determine the site's negative and positive features. Throughout the design process, we combine progressive ideas about stormwater management, use of native, lower-maintenance plants, utilizing appropriately sourced / reclaimed materials and water reclamation with the characteristics of the unique site. Probable costs are considered throughout the process, helping to guide design decisions and be sure that the final plan is within our client's budget. We further partner with select clients to see the developed design through to completion. Working with skilled tradesman with whom we have established trusting relationships over the last 20 years, we provide in-depth construction administration services. We act as the owner's representative to be sure that projects are delivered on time, on budget, and built according to the design intent.
From the age of fourteen, I spent all my high-school summers working for my dad. His construction company, R.J. Doiron Construction, filled the important needs of growing families who wanted to expand their post-war capes with shed dormers, and their ’60s ranches with second levels. The work was hard, hot, and long—but it toughened me up and taught me how to build and develop a good work ethic. I will always be grateful for the experience. With all my dad’s lessons under my tool belt, I sailed through vocational high school carpentry on a breeze and graduated at the head of my class. Continuing to work with my dad’s company, I fine-tuned my skills and expanded my knowledge when we worked on some beautiful older homes. At about the same time that my dad took early retirement I began my career in the field of high end building on the North Shore of Boston’s golden coast. I worked successfully for several companies, learning as much as I could from each, but there came a time when I felt that I really wanted to do things my way. On April 1, 1997, I established Michael Doiron Housewright. Since that day, our company has grown steadily. With each job we complete, our excellent reputation grows and our list of satisfied customers gets longer. Two years before I started M.D.H., my wife and I had bought a circa-1750 Cape Cod house. It was in such bad shape that most people considered it a tear-down (my dad offered us some matches). After I removed the many layers of drywall, acoustical ceiling tiles, linoleum, and hollow core doors I found that the bones and even some trim, flooring and plaster could be saved, restored, duplicated, and added to. All my work caught the eye of a local architect who recommended me for the high-profile restoration of a first-period saltbox on Argilla Road in Ipswich. I completed the project and was pleased and proud to win the "Mary Connelly Preservation Award". I even appeared on This Old House television show and in an article in their magazine! This project was the jumping-off point to countless more challenging, fun, and rewarding projects. Over the years we have built many major renovations, design/build homes, additions, garages, and barns. The first twenty years in business left me with a lot to be proud of and I look forward to another twenty years of success. Some say I make it look easy, and some days it is. On the days that it isn’t, we learn something new. I hope you enjoy the valuable services we offer.
