Jay's Custom Cabinets

I am a 72 year old retired building contractor who for many years designed, built, and sold high end custom homes on the Big Island. For for a long time I had a cabinetmaker, who was trained in Austria, who built all the cabinets for my homes to an extremely high level of craftsmanship, so I was used to high quality work. After 7 years of retirement and travel my wife and I set about to build what we hope to be our final home here in Hawaii. Because of our age we designed our home to be wheelchair accessable in the future, which required many custom specs for the cabinetry. As my previous cabinetmaker had retired and moved away, we had to find a new cabinetmaker, We contacted Jay's Custom Cabinets and began working with Jay's daughter, Robin, who handles the design work. After several rounds of refining the design, we settled on horizontal grain matched sapele plywood lowers and solid wood door uppers with glass panels. Throughout the entire process they were extremely accommodating to all my special requests and Robin even found several details I had overlooked that would have caused problems later on. When the cabinets were delivered I installed them myself, which required me to take an extremely close look at everything. I can say that all the dimensions were spot on and the cabinets met all my very critical expectations. Two other things I'd like to add: First, their prices are very reasonable. I got a quote for the same project from a well known high end cabinet shop in Kona that was almost exactly double the price Jay's charged us! Secondly, I have to comment on their integrity. We had just finished the design and final quote process when all the covid supply chain problems hit. Lumber and plywood prices soared. Of course they had to inform me that the price would now be higher. Anticipating a huge increase in the cost of our cabinets I was extremely happy when the final quote was only about 8% higher. They could have easily charged me more. So if you are looking for a quality custom cabinet builder for your project here on the Big Island I highly recommend Jay's Custom Cabinets.

Don't know why it took me so long to write a review. But Jay's did a fabulous job on our condo. A new kitchen and bathroom cabinets, plus some custom closets and paneling, A big and complex job that required some coordination with our contractor. The cabinets and counters are perfect, and Robin's organizational skills and patients were second to none. Thank you!

I looked all around the Big Island to find high quality kitchen cabinets for my new home near Pahoa, but what I found was that most stores had very limited choices, or would take at least 3 months to manufacture "semi-custom" cabinets which would come in from the mainland. This meant not only that I'd be waiting a long time, but since I had to provide all the measurements and choices by myself, it would be my problem if something came out wrong. Then I was introduced to Jay's Custom Cabinets. From my very first interaction with Robin, I knew I was in good hands. Jay himself came out to my home to measure and then re-check that all was in order for their install. He revised my ideas slightly to make everything work and look better. Then Jay's went to work building fully custom cabinets with wonderful accessories like tray slots and pull-out shelves in a magnificent warm hardwood. A little less than nine weeks after ordering (as promised), Jay's people showed up with some of the most beautiful kitchen cabinets I've seen in a while. They installed them meticulously, and the difference between semi-custom and true custom became very clear: The fully custom cabinets were not only far superior in look and quality, but they were created to fit with a designer's eye to detail. And the price was surprisingly close to that of Big Box store cabinets. I cannot overstate how grateful I am to have found Jay's cabinets, because they handled every moment of our dealings with care and talent I didn't find anywhere else. Plus they were able to give me virtually anything I could dream up for my kitchen. Thank you to Jay, Robin, and their entire team for making my kitchen redo such a pleasure and wit such a great result. For quality, style, workmanship and price, I can't imagine a better experience. Jay and his family-run crew replaced my kitchen, with a design that included a new wraparound pantry into the living room area that streamlined and unified what had been a very haphazard and broken up space. I initially wanted natural bamboo cabinetry, since we live in Hawaii, but I was initially wary of bamboo, because our Hawaii climate and humidity is very unforgiving to wood surfaces. I learned from Jay that he had actually experimented by soaking bamboo doors in barrels of water, and found them to be even sturdier than hardwoods.. I was impressed! My kitchen is now gorgeous, very functional, and a pleasure to work in, thanks to the design of Robin, Jay's daughter and designer extraordinaire. The bamboo is easy maintenance and still looks gorgeous after two years. Everyone who visits remarks upon the beauty and functionality of the space. My upcoming project is a bathroom renovation with a gorgeous design and matching bamboo cabinetry that will be done by Jay and company!

I designed a 100" vanity cabinet for a bathroom remodel. A local lumber company gave me a ridiculous estimate to have it built in Oregon. Jay's Custom Cabinets, located just a few miles from my home, built it for one-quarter of the cost. The cabinet is beautiful, sturdy, and functional.
