After working with Shadow Hill Custom Wood a few years ago to build a custom kitchen, I knew who to call on when I needed some custom closets created for my home. Rick custom built three closet units and installed them, and I couldn’t be happier! There were some delays in getting our project started due to COVID-related materials shortages, but the result is absolutely everything that I hoped for. We gained a ton of storage with furniture-grade cabinetry that will last a lifetime! Rick and his helper were in and out of my house in the agreed-upon time with all the finishing touches applied. I will definitely be reaching out to Shadow Hill in the future for other projects!

On January 8, 2021, I contracted with Rick Wallis owner of Shadowhill Custom Wood to make me a corner kitchen nook wall bench and table along with a separate bench for 3850.00. I had to pay around 50% down and we agreed that the work would be completed by the end of February. He measured and provided me with a very rough concept drawing but it had no details or measurements. It was not until the last minute that he let me know he was not finished and had a laundry list of excuses. I asked for my money back several times and he would not refund, said he didn’t have the money. I made a visit to his shop and sure enough he had done nothing. He had been lying to me all this time. The first part of May he came and installed the wall corner bench. It was not 100% what I was expecting and the color of the stain was not the color of the sample he provided to me. Both the table and the bench are too long, not to scale with the wall bench. The legs on the table wobble, stick out to far and are a tripping hazard. The bench is easily one foot too long and the very worst part it is the table and bench are a totally different color than the wall bench. . It looks ridiculous and I am embarrassed to have it in my home. It is very clear that while he may be a cabinetmaker he is NOT and I repeat he is NOT a furniture maker. He is a very poor communicator and so much of this could have been prevented if he would have asked questions, asked for clarification, sent me pictures when I asked for them and taken the time to design out the work. Had he built the pieces within the same timeframe he would have seen they weren’t to scale and that the stains did not match. He is a nice person I think but this has honestly been one of the worst, most frustrating experiences of my life. I asked him to fix the color and he said it wasn’t possible which of course it is, you strip it and re-stain to match but he didn’t offer to do so and at this point I am mentally and physically exhausted and just needed to pay him the rest of the money and be done with it. I will have to hire someone to refinish the table and side bench which will cost me even more money but I cannot have this in my home, estimates so far is over 1000.00 to fix, it is embarrassing that I have put myself in this situation. I trusted him and that he could do what he said and that was my mistake. His business is struggling and he is unreliable and not a man of his word. He blames everything on something other than himself and has a hard time telling the truth about where he is with things. If you don’t care about a delivery date and very little communication and only want cabinets made he can probably do that but if you are looking for reliability, honestly and quality furniture find yourself someone else.

Just had Rick in to do a small job in our home office. Rick was very professional and his craft is absolutely beautiful. We had no issues working with him and everything was seamless with the installation. Would absolutely consider working with him again.

We contracted with Rick to build custom kitchen cabinets for our home in September of 2019 and paid a 50% deposit. Rick estimated they would be complete by the end of November. He didn’t even begin work until December and then had to ask me for more money because he had spent my deposit already and didn’t have the funds to pay his bills and buy materials. More months, more excuses, and more draws later, he was finally mostly finished in March of 2020, three months late. Despite still owing us a spice rack and an upper and lower cabinet, I went ahead and paid the remaining few hundred dollars and paid him a 50% deposit to build a bookshelf and reskin a laundry chute. The work he did complete was beautiful and, while he was slow, he did eventually get it mostly done. Months went by and it was a never-ending string of excuses. Finally, after a whole year of waiting, we had enough and gave him an ultimatum a month ago: give us our money back, finish what we’ve paid for, or we’re taking you to court. Rick has still refused to complete a single item that he owes us and has left us with no choice but to sue him. It’s such a shame, because, what could have been a wonderful representation of his work, is marred by being incomplete and us having to take him to court to get our money back.

I first hired Rick in April 2019 to make custom closet cabinets and hanging storage for a small efficiency condo. He came out and took measurements and I explained what I wanted. He provided a sketch and estimate, and I pit 50% down. There were to be 2 cabinets that had 5 drawers on the bottom and shelving with doors on the top (think armoire) and 2 rods/shelves for the hanging storage. They were to be linear with the same depth for the drawers and shelving.
In May I was advised that the installation would be kn June. Then July. Then August and so on, until finally, in November, they were installed.
I was not in state during installation, so my son let them in to install. When completed, I was sent photos that show cabinets with 3 drawers and a setback for the shelving/cabinet doors. They were beautiful, but not what I ordered.
I emailed Rick the original sketch and the email that showed my only additions were dovetail drawers and adding cabinet doors to the back cabinet to enclose the shelving.
He said he was thinking of his closets and that the shelving would be better than drawers. I'm not happy that the cabinets are not what was agreed upon. I ah e yet to hear back on a solution, and the company Facebook page has been removed since this occurred and I was kot able to leave feedback.
It's a shame, because if the cabinets would have been made as I ordered them I think I'd have been extremely happy. I still have to check on the trim installation and the hanging storage to tell whether those were done satisfactorily.

My experience with Shadowhill was such a disappointing experience. We contracted with Rick to construct a large Acacia butcherblock island for our kitchen remodel. When I signed the contract May 15 and paid 60% of the project cost, I was told it would take 3-4 weeks to complete. He cashed our check right away (May 20). It took him over a month just to come over to do the templating for the size. He consistently failed to meet his own deadlines over three months.
After dozens of emails, voice calls, and reminders of his original deadlines, with ever growing frustrations, he finally told us he was going to START the work, nearly 3 months after he took our money (Aug 6). So not only was he running significantly behind, he lied to me over several months. Meanwhile, as this was our kitchen island, we had no running water, sink, counter, or dishwasher. He promised us he would install on Aug 9. Upon calling him to check in on him on Aug 7, Rick told us he couldn't get the materials in time for his deadline, and if we wanted a counter top, we'd have to pick a new kind of wood. So Shadowhill had over $2k of our money for three months, presumably for a material down payment, and yet hadn't ordered anything. So we ended up with teak, since it was readily available.
The install was a mess. He arrived late, brought the counter top in, and proceeded to leave saying he would be back shortly, it was over 2.5 hours he was gone. The installation of our breadboard ends was, and is, a mess (Pictured here). They are not flush with the counter and have large gaps, the craftsmanship is lacking, they aren't even the same kind of wood.
We asked him for some form of consideration in the final payment, seeing as how this 3-4 week project was now a 3 month project, we didn't get the kind of wood that we wanted, and the ends were messy. He wouldn't budge and we had to pay him the full amount. On final insult, he told us he would provide us with additional sealant to do a second coat later, ourselves. It's been 7 weeks since that promise, and we haven't heard a word.

I came to Shadowhill with a difficult task at the very best. To construct and install a custom kitchen in a month and a half before I moved into my new house. While we did overshoot the timing slightly, I am thoroughly satisfied with my Shadowhill kitchen in every aspect.
The quality and craftsmanship are top notch as are the products and materials used. I have worked for one of the major national cabinet brands and have never been thrilled with the quality for the price that they offer. Having received a number of quotes for pre-built cabinets, none of the off the shelf sizes would make full utilization of the modest space in my home. Further, the cost was outrageous for the quality and that was before installation or soft-close anything. For just a little more than standard fiberboard pre-built cabinets, Rick was able to construct custom units out of 3/4 inch plywood with 3/4 inch solid maple doors, finish them to my specifications, and install them with soft-close everything of course! He was able to make use of every inch of space in the kitchen of my modest home. During the entire design and build process we were able to make changes, often times with Rick bringing them up first.
With the proliferation of major brands and national advertisement, it is easy to forget that craftspeople like Rick are out there working to add customized beauty to people's homes. It is truly refreshing to have something that feels as though it is built to last for generations. If you are in the market for a new kitchen, or any other wood furniture, I highly recommend that you give Rick at Shadowhill Custom Wood a call.

I used Rick and Shadowhill Custom Wood to build a custom fit Hall Tree for our Mud Room. My wife and I were extremely satisfied with the quality of work and the time it was finished. We have yet to have someone enter the house that hasn't commented on how nice it looks. Outstanding work at a great price!!! Look forward to doing business with Rick in the future.

Furnished and installed a custom home bar in our lower level from scratch utilizing mahogany wood with granite tops. Great detail with many accessories provided. We couldn't be happier with the end result.

In 2012, we had Shadowhill Custom Wood, more specifically the owner, Rick Wallis work with us for the final phase of our basement project which was initially being done by another basement contractor. However, we separated from him and were extremely thankful to find Rick for the most detailed part of our project.
Since his experience demonstrated expertise in carpentry, we worked with him to finish our kids' desk/bookcase area and more importantly, the focal point of our basement, the fireplace mantle with bookcases on both ends. We also worked together to design two alcoves specifically meant to house artistic statues, and when finished we knew we could have never accomplished this with the previous contractor. Rick was extremely patient and very meticulous with the finer details and we collaborated together to bring our vision - with his experience and input - into reality.
As this was the last phase of our project, we noticed that small things were left undone and needed to be addressed. We turned to Rick for help and as always he was very receptive to our concerns and helped us in every capacity to finish the project. Rick's work in other parts of our basement demonstrates his caliber and experience, which is not exclusive only to wood work but to other facets of the project as well, like installing led lights in bookcases, wiring for sound bar underneath TV and alcove overhead lighting, and many inumerous other small jobs. We have been very pleased with his work and are recommending Shadowhill Custom Wood to our friends for any remodeling needs.
We are extremely grateful to Rick for being ever so pleasant in his demeanor that it made our interactions very productive and the outcome is self explanatory. We would without a doubt approach Shadowhill Custom Wood again if there was ever a future need.
