Organizing and cleaning have always been a passion for as long as I can remember. By the time I was 12, I was cleaning, rearranging, and organizing while I was babysitting other people’s kids – after the children went to bed. Word spread and I was in demand for the service at a whopping $1.00 per hour! My friends started to hire me at $20.00 per hour in the nineties to help them discard, organize, and decorate. Every design firm I worked for – I repurposed the spaces around me for harmony, I re-engineered filing systems and storage systems for functional and timely retrieval of proposals, reports, and design boards for interviews. I worked as a live-in caregiver while attending college to lower my overhead costs while attending school and raising a daughter. My life as a caregiver has taught me a lot about the needs of the elderly, including arranging living spaces to safely remove tripping and falling hazards, as well as downsizing to move clients into an assisted living facility. Fast forward to June 2014. Today, I am happily self-employed and doing what I love: Simply Organized by Valerie. I truly enjoy the combination of creativity and precision that bring a result of discarding, having an eye for simple design, layout, and functionality that bring clean, satisfying and immediate results. I am the kind of person who subscribes to Cook’s Illustrated and I read every magazine article I can get my hands on that is about organization and discarding. If I am going to take the time of doing something like preparing a meal or improving my environment, I aim for the best results. While I love being self-employed, I struggled with becoming certified because I have been organizing for so long, and it’s a natural innate talent, for me… I feel like I can write all the books and teach all the classes! Nevertheless, I am on track to become a Marie Kondo consultant using the KonMari Method, and I am a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO). While you are sometimes the most mature skilled cat on the street, there’s always something new to learn.
