Citizen is a design-build firm specializing in urban residential construction. We love creating spaces that our clients feel reflects who they are. Inspired by the idea that all people, spaces and things have a story; we want to connect these narratives in a meaningful way. Often our clients just need the language and opportunity to explain and work-out what it is they love. Our goal is to walk with them through this process, offering our expertise in design and process…and then, build it!
We think it’s important to be good citizens and we strive to create harmony between our clients, their home and their neighbourhood. We love to see our clients inspired, the land respected, and the neighbourhood benefitted. We are thinkers and dreamers and love working with people who feel the same.

We learned of Citizen via a recommendation as we were seeking to undertake renovations to our newly acquired home. The owner, Ryan Macleod, clearly understood our needs and accommodated our many inquiries and requests. Overall we were extremely pleased with the work. Ryan, his team and the contractors were all very professional. Dealing with Ryan in particular was a pleasure. This is not your typical contractor – Ryan has direct knowledge, experience and qualifications in the relevant trades. Combined with his considerate, meticulous and creative approach to our projects, this meant he was able to understand our needs, achieve our high expectations around outcomes and quality, and deliver on time and on budget. We were so happy with the work that we had Citizen back for a series of further renovations. We highly recommend Citizen Design Build.

We are currently on project #2 with Citizen and just really appreciate working with Ryan and his team. Intuitively, the design/build concept just makes sense to us. The fact that Ryan comes at it from a builder's value perspective and wants to create really liveable spaces as opposed to grandiose wow spaces, just ticks with how we think. Throughout our experience Ryan has always been very fair with pricing and always cognizant of the value equation to the client. The fact that he and his team are tech savvy means that much of the design work can be completed from my office, eliminating a lot of travel time. That means a quicker turnaround and obviously a more efficient time line. Would I hire Citizen again? Absolutely. It is worth noting that project #1 never went ahead due to a municipality issue that could not be resolved. That said, working with Ryan and his team was such a great experience that there was really no question as to who we would hire for project #2.

When our family decided to turn a little-used space in our home into something that suited our unique needs, we turned to Citizen. It was obvious very early on in our conversations that Ryan, and his team at Citizen, shared our values of collaboration, community and effective use of space. Within short order we had a number of professionally designed plans presented at different budgets to compare, discuss and choose from based on our needs. I appreciated the one-on-one communication with Ryan from start to finish, the respectful and trustworthy crew working in our home, quality and the creativity used to turn our little laundry room and sittings area into a very unique, well used and inviting flex room!

Citizen has it all; a focus on quality and a professionalism that seems to come naturally. Ryan and the guys took time to understand my needs & ideas, then used their creative vision to give me a space that is both functional & beautiful. Our conversations gave me complete confidence that my home (and money) was in great hands. I was not disappointed and have been enjoying the benefits of my decision and their hard work ever since! I never hesitate to recommend Citizen Building!

This company has been strategic in the visioning and practical layout of my youth center. Citizen's expertise and efficient use of material was outstanding and the space we created gets oooh's and ahh's every time a new person walks into the space. I feel Citizen maximized my budget by giving me practical advice on how to make my youth space work for me.

We hired Citizen to replace a bathroom fan, install proper ventilation for this fan, another bathroom fan, and a kitchen fan, and to install a ceiling border in two large rooms to match a coved ceiling feature in the rest of the house. First, Ryan (owner) was very helpful in respectfully introducing design ideas that we otherwise wouldn't have considered. Second, Citizen's workers were timely, conscientious and professional throughout their time working on our project. The work was clearly explained to us and all of our questions were thoughtfully addressed. Third, the only surprise we had was a pleasant one...the project came in under budget.
Citizen is the model of quality workmanship and integrity. The world needs more businesses like this one. We have no hesitation in giving them a 5-star rating.

Citizen provides amazing value for services offered. As a lifelong advocate of great service delivery I know of few who compare cross industry with the likes of Cindy and Ryan from Citizen. We have hired them for several projects and been more than satisfied with not only the results, but more importantly the delivery of service. Constructions projects are very complex with many moving parts including and most challenging client expectations. Ryan is a great listener and passionate about caring for you as a client. He truly looks out for the best interest. He has become a trusted advisor which removes uncertainty and therefore stress from the renovation process. He is approachable, candid, and has a great ability for fair resolve. I will continue to include him and citizen in future projects. I think the process is as important as the end result. If you want to enjoy the process of design and build then hire these folks!
Our home is on the website as the fernwood project if you want to see some of the result of their work.
