If you want your project done incorrectly, take extra time, and cost a lot of money, then this is the company for you! Stay away from this company. They have a bunch of fancy architects, but zero practical skills on actually doing construction. The most disorganized company we've ever dealt with. So many things were done wrong and needed to be revised upon actual build time.

We hired Hatchet for the renovation of our 1910 townhouse. They did a terrible job. The kitchen they installed is already so worn out that we need to replace at least the cabinet doors - after 3 years. The door to the deck that they built they had to repair shortly after we moved in. It is going to pieces! Worse - their electrician did such a shoddy job that just today an outlet caught fire and burnt out. Another electrician told me that this was not supposed to be intalled the way it was. This is outright dangerous. And this is not even mentioning all the details like holes they left or the missing silicone around the kitchen sink, the paint that blisters and so on and on. We tried to get them to fix things but Zach the owner just ignored everything. We trusted Zach and we have been deeply disappointed and taken advantage off.

We partner with Hatchet Design Build and their millwork team, Good Dog Rosie for a number of our Brooklyn interior design projects. They are a fabulous team to work with, extremely professional, and their quality of work is exceptional. I highly recommend this group for townhome renovations and custom build work such as built-ins, cabinetry, bookshelves, and in home offices - they do it all!

Hatchet Design Build worked for me in my apartment renovation. They were a pleasure to work with: knowledgeable, enthusiastic, hard-working. Each one of the people who worked here cared about the quality of their work, and as a group, they worked hard to understand what I was trying to achieve and find the best ways to achieve it within our time limits and budget constraints. In addition, they minimized the at times significant headaches typical in NY co-ops. I felt so well-taken care of and was always sure they knew what they were doing. I have worked with multiple contractors and Hatchet is to whom I would entrust my next project. No doubting it. The job was the extensive renovation of a four-story historic townhouse. Highlights follow. - astonishing responsiveness and work rate: 2071 email messages exchanged over fifteen months. That's nearly five a day and does not include telephone and in-person conversations. No dead phases, continuous effort, ease of scheduling meetings outside of business hours. - exemplary transparency: every potential action and scenario was fully itemized and priced out ahead of time and adhered to. Zero ambiguities which saved me a lot of budgeting headache. - fairness and customer-orientation: every post-hoc concern (the rare finish oversight) was addressed and resolved to satisfaction. - flexibility: the project expanded significantly in fits and starts throughout the project—one-eighties of my own doing as well as adjusting to realities uncovered mid-stream—and Hatchet adapted at every turn and provided reliable guidance. Switching out the entire heating system, relocating a bathroom, excavating and resurfacing the patio, laying out new flooring far more extensively than planned, and so on and so forth. Not to mention that I was living onsite for half of the project with two other people including a child, and once again Hatchet managed that constraint admirably. - competence: the millwork and varied surface refinishings were particularly impressive, both in terms of craft and historical mindfulness. As indeed was the expert execution of the structural measures that had me originally most concerned. - admirable people all round. Politeness and intelligence. There was an unexpected amount of turnover among the field managers, but the transitions were close to seamless.

Hatchet was by far the best contractor I've ever worked with. They have a great eye for design, are effective problem solvers, very kind people, and most importantly finished the project ON TIME and at a great price. I have recommended them to everyone I know and will use them on any of my own future projects!

Zach and his team at Hatchet Design Build are amazing to work with! We first worked together on a gut renovation of my entry way, kitchen and living room. I was so pleased with the process and end result that I called Zach when I was ready to complete the renovation of my bedroom and bathroom. Zach and his team are wonderful to work with.
