About Us

John Webb Construction & Design is a full Design, Build firm in association with The Field Issuance Remodel (FIR) program which is designed to provide fast track plan review and inspection services to a small group of registered contractors and architects in the Portland, OR. area. To achieve success in all aspects of a project, we believe in creating a close partnership with our clients by understanding their individual needs and responding to those needs by sharing our professional knowledge and experience. We are service-oriented and believe follow-through is essential for a successful partnership. We take great pride in superior client service. A unique and efficient advantage to our company is that we can provide all of the services related to your project: Drafting, Permitting, Plans & Documentation, Engineering, Interior & Exterior Design, Project Management and the actual Construction. Excellent communication, project management, accurate scheduling and cost control bring our projects in on time and on budget. John Webb has been designing and building homes in Oregon and California since 1986. Prior to obtaining his own contractor’s license, he worked for over 10 years as a journeyman with renowned architects and artisans in the industry. John brings over 30 years of experience to the local community and is an active member of the Oregon Remodelers Association and the Lane County Home Builder’s Association. In accepting a project, John applies many elements of design: form, scale, color, texture, function and environment to present a solution specifically tailored to each client’s individual needs. We take code requirements, health and safety, durability, maintainability, acoustics and historical accuracy into consideration. We place significant importance on how a structure fits the site and the environment, taking full advantage of views and the natural surroundings. We make a conscious effort to incorporate light, openness, privacy and modern comforts into spaces. For every project, we ensure money spent is a sound investment that enhances the property value for the client. Residential, we focus on realizing client vision, personalization and customization. Commercially, we consider business identification and image, demographics of the business’s clientele and the functionality of the facility.

My wife and I recently completed a significant remodel and addition with this company, and I can confidently say they are among the best contractors I've ever worked with. John and his team handled everything from design and engineering to permitting, leaving us to focus solely on selecting finishes and managing payments. Although the construction took longer than we expected due to some challenges with our 50-year-old house, John and his team kept us informed about any issues and promptly addressed them to keep the project on track. Everyone, including the subcontractors, was not only professional but also friendly, and it turned out that one of them was a close friend of my father-in-law. Ultimately, my wife, our three kids, and I are thrilled to be living in such a beautiful home. I would wholeheartedly recommend John and his subcontractors to my friends and family. One note, John's focus is quality and not getting it done as cheap as possible where it will fall apart after 10 years.

I wrote the review below in 2017 after the completion of our kitchen remodeling project. We are still "getting over" this experience. Contemplating another remodeling project, which has taken us this long to even consider, I began searching for contractors, and found that John Webb Construction has explicitly ignored my direction I gave to NOT use our 2017 remodeling pictures as advertisement. I would use extreme caution regarding this individual's trustworthiness & professionalism: John Webb Construction remodeled our kitchen from Mar.1, to June 7 2017. I have nothing to gain personally nor financially from this review, and do so only to share our story with anyone looking to hire this contractor. On a scale of 1-10, from worst to best, I would rate the finished product as a 6-7, and our experiences with this business as a 1. They were over budget and weeks beyond schedule completion. We caught numerous errors in billing that were meant for the other jobs they were doing. We were told the day of signing the contract, by John, that it would take 2 months, thereby setting highly inaccurate expectations with us. Their communications, when not prompted by us, were nearly non-existent. Due to this, when asked in a civil and respectful manner for information on the project, this led to confrontations described below. Their project manager was beyond exasperating. The schedules and information we received from him were inaccurate more than half of the time. When we asked about these, he became evasive, contradictory and/or defensive. Most serious was John’s unprofessional, verbally abusive and intimidating behavior. On two occasions, unprovoked, seemingly routine discussions escalated with him yelling and screaming at me, & intimidating my wife in our own home. I have never in my entire life dealt with a businessman that chose to respond to questions and request with such offensive & unprofessional behavior. We basically put up with this to get the project completed, but it took a toll on both of us. Their carpentry skills were adequate, not superior. Their attention to detail, not good during the early phases of the project, became non-existent towards the end. John also made unilateral decisions on design & materials that we did not want, failing to integrate features we had asked for pre-job. They did not include these in the details of the contract, nor was this caught by us, but once constructed/implemented, they were too difficult/costly/timely to reverse; another example of a lack of attention to detail and a disregard for the wishes of their customer. Lastly, their big concern at the end of the project, after all that had happened, was to photograph the kitchen. We never agreed to this in the contract, nor gave permission to them when they requested, yet they sent a photographer to the house to do so, exhibiting more bullying and disrespectful behavior.

I was more than a little surprised to see this review pop up on this site more than 5 years after we completed this project. It’s difficult to refute something when there are few actual examples to reply to. I will try to address the clients concerns in the order they’re presented.
1.Clients claim we, “…explicitly ignored my direction...” The clients were always on site when my guys and/or subs were there. I would think if there was something wrong, that it would have been addressed at the time.
2.Clients rate the finished product at 6-7. I’ll take this as a win, considering they’re still willing to rate the work 6-7 more than 5 years later.
3.We’ve had the same accountant for nearly 30 years of the 40 years I’ve been in business. Errors are virtually non-existent. However, the client did have many questions/concerns with most of the billing. I did find one actual error in the amount of $258.75, which we promptly credited back. I also provided several other credits as an act of good will. The amounts were relatively small and if it helped the client feel better about the charge, then I felt it was well worth it. In hindsight, we should have put that disclaimer on the credit memo. All of our invoices include complete labor detail (name, date, duration, explanation) and a copy of each and every receipt. In addition, our invoices are provided as often as once a week but no later than twice a month.
4.Yes, it took longer to complete the project than we anticipated. I won’t go into all of the reasons for this but there was a lot going on that was out of my control. Also, frankly, I just don’t remember all the details. We probably could have been faster, but we did our best. I do remember having a lot of back and forth regarding the key to the property. The clients didn’t want to provide a key but they did agree to a lockbox. Many times, they removed the key from the lock box so there was a lot of waiting and rescheduling. I remember once, the key was not in the lock box but I saw the client inside the property. I knocked for more than 10 minutes and he never answered the door. What’s that about?
5.Client says, “he became evasive, contradictory, and/or defensive”. We responded to literally hundreds of emails and dozens of phone calls. We may not have agreed with everything the client said but we showed up, returned each of the emails and all of the phone calls. I’ve never been a ‘yes man’ but I’m never disrespectful or unprofessional.
6.Yes, we sent a photographer to this project as we do with all of our projects. If the clients didn’t want their kitchen photographed, why did they let the photographer in the property and allow them to setup and take photos? I wasn’t aware of using any of these photographs in our advertising but if something did get posted, I’m happy to take it down. I just need to know where they’re seeing it.
Of course, I would rather have handled the clients concerns face to face, in real time, and not 5 years after the fact but I can’t leave a review like this unanswered. I had John and his team complete an interior remodel on a 70's built home in the Gilham area of Eugene. The goal was to keep the style of the home as is, while incorporating new finishes and changing the footprint, providing a better connection between the different spaces. Communication was great from the office start to finish providing realistic expectations, the team on-site were professional yet personable (someone you could have a drink with on the golf course), and the online management system was very helpful during the time I was out of town keeping me up to date daily with photos/notes, as well as scheduling, and budget. If you want a good investment and added value to your home this is the group to do it!

His firm did the design, the plans, and all of the construction. His price wasn't the lowest but the innovative approach and the quality of the work was flat out amazing.

We chose John Webb for our kitchen, bath and laundry room remodel because he specialized in Ikea cabinets with custom exteriors/cabinet doors, and we felt he could translate our idea to try to preserve most of the the ranch-era styling and keep the design simple. He had some great design ideas and we went with most of what he recommended. It's been about 9 months since work was completed we are are extremely happy with both the styling and functionality of the new space. The schedule ended up being a little longer than planned but John's team was great to work with and, more importantly, they came in on budget.

We had a really excellent experience with John and his team. We hired John for a major kitchen remodel which involved removing the existing kitchen and building a new one in what was the family room, and knocking down a wall to create an open layout. They brought so many great ideas to the table, and there was really strong communication throughout--mostly with John in the beginning, then his project manager, then his master carpenter who was onsite most of the time. As an added bonus, all were really nice people! The project came in slightly delayed and over budget, primarily due to a surprise finding that the walls were not insulated, and needed to be to be up to code, and slow response time from the city on permits. Because these issues were going to push us over budget, so John suggested we do the final wall painting ourselves, which would help us make up the cost and bring us in near to budget, so we did that. We can’t say enough good things about our experience with John Webb Construction and would highly recommend them for any home project.

I recently hired John Webb Construction to help with design and installation of my kitchen. John came out to see the existing kitchen and consult with me about what I was looking to have done, even offering up advice on ways I could save money. With the help of Braden (Contractor) I was walked through the entire process from start to finish, explaining each line item in the bid and proposed timelines. When work began, Dale (and later Renee) was awesome. He was always on time, always cleaned up at the end of the day, and did everything with great attention to detail. John Webb Construction did an amazing job. Highly recommended!!

Our experience with this contractor was a complete and utter disaster. Their customer service was horrible, their regard for safety non-existent, their ability to meet a budget was a joke (they were so far off it was laughable). Do yourself a favor and go out of your way to avoid this contractor.

We had our 1959 kitchen/breakfast nook gutted and remodeled by the professional team of John Webb Construction. We knew when they would be here, who would be working that day and the area cleaned everyday. We knew the price and delays of all extra added projects above what we thought we wanted at the start of the project. John and Scott have great suggestions that you never imagined and work with all of your wild ideas with frankness and humor. I had some doozies. Any time in the future that we re-model, John and company will be our go to company.
