This company's marketing includes wording to the effect that they build houses for their customers as if they themselves were to live there. At first, we thought that this was the work of a clever ad wizard. Then we hired Tradition Homes. From initial conversations three years ago to warranty activities occurring right now, we have experienced nothing less than complete professionalism.
It is easy to sound disingenuous in a review supporting the highest rating. So, I will provide a few examples, from among the many occasions in which this company delivered beyond expectations.
BACKGROUND: While our goals in building were to provide pleasant aging-in-place for ourselves as well as light spacious gathering places and accomodations for guests and overnight visitors, lot posed unique challenges for drainage/environmental services in the jurisdiction, which manifested as frequent basement flooding. We wanted a house built at the high level of quality for which contractor is known but at a scale that would fit the reduced area of our lot and size of our budget.
DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION: Although new to issues concerning Chesapeake Bay Conservation (CBC), architects DeFalco and Hovis produced a design which fit the lot in a manner that respected county regulations, that is, at specific distances from CBC, creek, neighboring lots and the front street, while including porch, deck, storage & mud rooms, powder rooms with shower fixtures, and, most important, a drainage plan with footings about 10 inches higher than those of previous structure, sump pump with back-up, waterproofing inside and out, and a grading plan consisting of a rock bed around the foundation feeding sump ducts flowing down and back away from the house.
We have lived in the house for a couple of months, during which it has rained several times, and moisture levels in the lower level rec room remain unchanged. We thought a dry basement on the lot impossible. But Tradition achieved it with attention to design details and informed oversight of construction process.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Once the papers were signed, this company got to work with engineering blueprints and county approvals while we organized our moveout and tear down. During this period, we started the process of selecting fixtures and finishes with weekend drive-bys to the construction site to observe progress. We were in regular contact with the Project manager with any questions and, later, arranged with him to visit the site for inspections of specific work. At this time, we were given timeframes for completion of steps in building process. Were were also quoted deadlines well in advance of those given by the original timeline.
Mr Walters experience, knowledge of the building process and ability to work well with both technical and trades professionals had him arranging for subcontractors to start and finish their work in accordance with an accelerated schedule that was largely honored, even with our occasional special requests and weather-related slow-downs. Project's unexpected early finish led to cost savings in areas related to temporary storage, residence and financing. Walters's approachability, flexibility and openness during the stressful building period reassured us of timely job completion and validated our choice of Tradition for their high standards in workmanship, materials, and process efficiency/effectiveness.
INTERIORS & AESTHETICS: It is difficult to imagine this project coming together without the talents of Tradition's interior design expert, Ms Amanda Needham. In every aspect of visual appeal and unity of visual design, Ms Needham was a welcome guide and participant. Her expertise and her excitement for the work, as well as her preparation, suggestions and experience, made what could have been an onerous task, a real joy. She knows the business of decor and supplied the right materials for the project at just the right time and at the right price. Needham's established friendly and effective relationships with suppliers contributed to our enjoyment of the process and served us well as customers.
More important, at moments of indecision, Ms Needham knew just how to turn the conversation to elicit from us the exact response needed to make a selection. We have received many compliments on "House by Needham." Needless to say, Ms Needham achieved masterful effects of color and style that we would have been unable to manage on our own, much less in the timely manner required, and this has enhanced our enjoyment of the home.
