Though Ken and Julie Girardini's major installations are superb, for those of us who must survive without a complete interior overhaul, the G's are equally gifted at creating stunning sculptural pieces that you can incorporate into your existing space on a smaller scale. Working with this firm is like being on a journey. Ours started in Japan, where we discovered the delicate beauty of handmade paper and returned home toting several sheets thereof. Next was a lucky stumble onto K & J's website where their magical combinations of steel and paper provided instant inspiration to create a sculptural piece of our own, using a combination of our Japanese paper, photos from the trip, and a customized version of the Girardini's long boat sculpture to showcase it all. The process of creating our boat was exhilarating. We felt like members of the design team. Ken and Julie are great at bouncing ideas back and forth until satisfaction is achieved on all fronts. We love our boat! Though it was created from materials and photos we brought home from our trip, it is in no way an overtly personal souvenir; rather, it's a true piece of art that also happens to have been brilliantly designed and executed just for us. One project turned into two, and the Japanese paper motif was carried forward to create yet another sculpture which is completely original and different from the first. It is thematically very Girardini, but again has been customized to suit our personal tastes. Wow! This stunning piece, entitled "Illuminated Passage," literally sings out in color and texture from its perch on our bedroom wall.
