Carpet Gallery - Carpet One

We recently embarked on a project that included new flooring for five primary rooms. On a recommendation from a Real Estate friend, I visited Carpet Gallery- Floor One on Mercury Blvd, in Hampton, VA. I was greeted by the Founder/Owner and introduced to the store owner and others present. I shared my parameters of our desired flooring and price range. I was given several samples of carpet and LVT to review for our spaces. Although it took me a great deal of time to "make up my mind", they never rushed me, nor did they push me to make a sale. I found it interesting that the owner shared that usually you end up selecting what first caught your eye. True in my case! Each person I worked with, from the store owners, to the job manager, offered suggestions but also really listened to my ideas. After seeing the extent of the job, they selected a contractor and his team, that could handle the removal of existing flooring, and install both LVT and Carpet. To our surprise, sub- flooring needed to be replaced in a small area and this team was ready to do that work as well, no problem. Now, not all team members spoke English well, but one of the gentlemen did. Although, this can be challenging, I found they were responsive and If I asked a worker something and they did not understand, they stopped what they were doing and found the team leader to assist. There were, as is always the case, a few "mis- communications" on both our parts. With patience we were able to work those out to my (the customer) satisfaction. How they did all of this work in three days is impressive! A day or two after the installation, I noticed that one transition needed to be "tweaked". I called the company owner and a team member came on the date I requested and fixed this. So... for our project we had an excellent experience with this company. This company replaced our flooring after a water leak that destroyed the whole downstairs. We went with pre-finished flooring. I had difficulty getting information on the prices of flooring from the salesman in Hampton and my husband and I finally went to the Williamsburg location to select flooring. We looked at a few and I then called the salesman in Hampton to get information on insurance payments and what would be covered. He said he didn't have time to figure it out... and this was after weeks of waiting for him to get that information. I asked him about two and then, when I did not hear from him, called him again and was told he had selected one of the floors and ordered. This is not what I had asked for. I don't know if his problem was in dealing with a woman, or in doing his job in general. We decided it would be OK, though we'd have preferred the second one (a difference of maple vs. hickory). We are still not happy with the job though they have been back once. There are gaps in the flooring in places and other places there it is raised to almost buckling. The flooring was not equal in it's width, so if not selected and grouped, there can be a 1/8 " gap between boards. We complained and were told new flooring would be delivered that would be better. To ensure this, I wrote down the batch numbers and was rather disappointed to find that the "new" batch had the exact same numbers. Still, the new flooring installer took more time, and the gaps were fewer. We still have them though. This company did get a special paper (they were originally going to use tar paper under the flooring which I have never heard of) with no VOC's. I did appreciate them researching and using this product that came from the owner of the company. To be honest, if I had not been directed to this company by the contractor, I'd have used someone else after trying to deal with the salesman. They did come back to fix one of the larger open cracks, but it is open again. I can't tell that they nailed anything, which should be easy as they didn't put putty where top nails were used. So, it's not just the flooring manufacturing process we had problems with, but the company that sold and installed it. I think if you are one to demand things be done right, you might have a better experience than I did. It has also been a number of years and the salesman and installer may no longer be with this company. We did not have the energy to fight for right. The owner seems conscientious and knowledgeable, and, as I stated before, did help with a different underlay paper for the flooring. I do thank him for that.
