A passion for old homes in Saint Paul: For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for the warmth, history and craftsmanship of old homes. This passion, combined with my love for working with my hands, inspired me to embark on a career in the construction industry over 25 years ago. Uniting Old and New: I founded Ben Quie & Sons (formerly Tectone Construction) in 1988. We are a St. Paul home remodeling company specializing in bringing together the charm of vintage homes with the appeal of modern conveniences. Ben Quie & Sons did a mudroom and sunroom addition, along with a basement addition to our house. We could not be more pleased! We had hired other contractors for full-bathroom remodels, but Ben Quie was by far the best. Communication was excellent and clear and constant through the project so we knew what was happening and when. The work was very high quality, any delays were explained and were reasonable (e.g. weather). Everyone we dealt with was professional and helpful and more than happy to answer any questions we had, and also worked with us to help make decisions about the project when wanted. They are respectful and helped us figure out where we could cut some costs to best utilize our budget for the project. The pricing and cost were clearly explained and agreed upon in advance. There was one portion that ended up being slightly more expensive than expected (part of the foundation wall in the new basement addition), but they had told us in advance that until they dug down and saw what was there that this may be the case, so it wasn't entirely unexpected.

They renovated our kitchen, expanded 2 bathrooms, added a powder room, created a basement bedroom, and got the work done according to the set schedule even with the addition of changes we made. We were kept informed at every step with an innovative website that logged the progress and personal contact. (We lived in Michigan while the work was going on.) Ben's advice was stellar not only regarding design and materials but energy-savings and cost. The employees and the sub-contractors were not only expert but great to be around. Ben Quie & Sons (BQS) provided an excellent remodeling experience. The planning process was thoughtful--he brought ideas, but also listened to our ideas, and came up with a plan that corresponded to our needs and desires. Project communication was excellent and I never had to worry about the project. We were very comfortable with our back-up kitchen set up (we had everything except a stove) and the remodeling process was incredibly clean! There was very little dust or mess outside of the remodeled space. The work reflects beautiful craftsmanship, and a knowledge of older homes. We are thrilled with the final product and feel reassured that if something comes up in the first year, BQS will take care of it. All and all, an amazing experience.

For over 25 years we have had the distinct pleasure of working with Ben Quie and Sons on a number of projects for our Victorian home, built in 1889 in the North St. Anthony Park neighborhood of St. Paul. These included both interior and exterior work, from transforming a 3rd floor attic into a master bedroom to restoring front and side porches. Most recently Ben completed a major first floor remodel of our home--installing hardwood floors, converting an existing fireplace into a period looking gas fireplace, and replacing oak woodwork throughout. As part of this project, Ben reconfigured an existing bathroom to connect to a new mudroom and back yard entrance he designed and built. Ben's attention to detail, the high standard of his workmanship, and the quality of materials he uses are hallmarks of his approach. We were also impressed with the professionalism and reliability of every subcontractor involved with a project of this scope. Ben's unique ability to restore the quiet elegance of older homes is without peer. We would--and have--recommended Ben without hesitation to friends and family for their remodeling needs.

Ben Quie & Sons constructed a canopy entrance on the facade of our beautiful 1908 home in St Anthony Park this past fall (2016). Ben was the consummate professional as he carefully explained the project to us and worked closely with the architect to create exactly what we wanted. He worked hard to stay within our budget. Our carpenter Mark, who did the actual construction, worked efficiently and effectively. There was a last minute alteration we discussed with him, and he was able to incorporate that small change flawlessly. We would highly recommend working with Ben Quie & Sons. They were fabulous!

We used Ben Quie & Sons for 3 major projects & many minor projects on our 100-year old house, and loved his common sense, his good design sense, and most of all, his honesty. When we had a chance to build a new handicapped-accessible house, we lined up Ben as the contractor, and he gave us a great recommendation for an architect. The communication between the contractor, the architect and the landscaper was wonderful, and the end result is beautiful. Ben has always been willing to work with architectural salvage, the needs of small children, and all my odd requests with good humor and good advice. Ben Quie and Sons did a large kitchen remodel and living room remodel in our 1917 bungalow. They specialize in older homes and we found that experience very helpful in updating our house. We appreciated working with Ben throughout the entire process from sales to design and through the construction. I can't say enough about their level of quality in workmanship and attention-to-detail. The carpenter who was at our house daily was excellent, contentious, and very clean, which made living through the project easy. We are thrilled with our new kitchen and can't imagine ever using another contractor.
