I finally found Chuck here after 10 years of searching for him. The bottom line is: (1) he did not finish the project to build an add on of approximately 1000 sf, (2) we paid for the project in advance instead of making payments during the work, (3) 2 years after starting the project, he abandoned the project and disappeared - his contact information was changed as well as his company name, (4) he did not oversee the project or workers, (5) he did not pay his subcontractors - they came to us to receive payment even though we paid Chuck well in advance for all work, (6) the quality was very poor except for the painting, (7) we have been replacing rotten wood, stucco , AC, electric, decks, uneven flooring, and more. Some details are here in the following paragraph. We hired Chuck to design and build an extension to our existing bungalow in Montrose. Chuck designed the remodel, which we really liked, and his priced was reasonable. Chuck estimated the job would take 7 months so we moved into apartment. The project started fairly well. We then paid Chuck for 80 percent of the work even though only about 20 percent was completed according to the schedule. I trusted Chuck and wanted to help him financially. Soon after paying Chuck, development slowed to a trickle. We had to track him down; we found him working on other houses in the neighborhood. He then stopped supervising. The workman ship became shoddy and neglected. Simple things like Chuck didn’t tarp the house during framing - rain water came in for months on the second story floor, puddled and then ran down into the existing part of the house. When problems were found, Chuck ignored the fix and covered it up. Two years after he started the project, he claimed he didn’t have money to finish our house. Yet, he had money to complete his other projects in the area. Of course, we paid for those houses. We then had to hire another contractor to finish our project, which was about 20 percent of the total. Since then, we’ve had to fix and replace many of the poorly constructed problems he left us with. Some items, like the stucco and windows that he installed during the construction, were never sealed and had multiple penetrations that led to wood rot. So we lost a lot of money, spent two years in an apartment for a seven month job, almost lost house insurance due to his delay (they required we move in even though the house wasn’t finished), never got what we paid for, had to supervise workers if they showed up (infrequent), then had to go through the process again with another contractor while living in the space.
