We have relied on Joe, Andrew, and their team every step of the way of a major home renovation -- from advising us prior to the purchase, to consulting on structural issues, to coaching on our DIY efforts, to pulling together and overseeing quality subcontractors, to offering suggestions and creative solutions throughout the project. Being able to count on the whole CustomWorks team for knowledgeable, reliable, and straight-shooting advice and true workmanship has helped relieve much of the stress of transforming a decrepit old house into our happy new home.

I have been in the property management business in Boston for over 30 years. It has been a pleasure to work with Joe & Andrew Trainor of Custom Works. I and my unit owner's have used them in the repair of properties on Commonwealth Ave. for 12+ years. Everything from deck rebuild, window replacements, masonry repairs, interior repair & remolding etc... They are always professional, thorough, informative. The quality of their work is top notch and the pricing is very fair. An unusual combination to be sure. They take the time to examine the repair, explain in detail the way the repair will happen, always take extreme care to protect the property/home. Also, take many before and after photo's. We hired CustomWorks to combine two units of a brownstone and to do a gut renovation of the combined unit. The final product was a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom unit. The project took about 6 months to complete, which was on-schedule. Throughout, Joe and Andrew were professional and incredibly responsive. Our project, like all projects, had unforeseen issues and they were always transparent and helpful in making the best decision for the project and our budget. Our project manager was Andrew and we cannot say enough good things about him as a person and a professional. We were also happy with their subcontractors and when we did have an issue with one part of the project, CustomWorks spent substantial time and (their) money to fix the issue. Our one constructive criticism is that we wish they billed more frequently so we could better track actual costs to budget projections (as we understand it, they have begun to do so based on our feedback). We have since used them for other projects.

We hope these guys will be our forever contractor because not only do they do high-quality work, they have been the most responsive as far as communication and getting things done asap. We have years of experience dealing with other contractors in and around Boston and and consider CustomWorks to be superior in their knowledge of the historic buildings in Boston as well as their industry as a whole. We considered their pricing to be very fair and it goes without saying that we felt comfortable with them in the home.

It is always a pleasure to work with Joe and Andrew Trainor and the crew at CustomWorks Contracting. They are professional, meticulous, dependable and reliable. We had a broken outdoor stair railing that was unsafe for us to use. Knowing our ages (85) Joe reacted promptly to our request to repair it, since he wanted us to be safe. Not only did they do the carpentry, but they took a paint sample, matched it up to the rest of the railing, painted what they had replaced and everything looks brand new. They wore masks, social distanced from us and even sent us a video of them sanitizing the area after they worked on it. I wish we had a major renovation for them to do as it’s always a pleasure to work with them.

CustomWorks did a fine job on our lobby renovation. They worked within our budget, were responsive, and completed the work to our satisfaction.

We first had the pleasure of working with Joe and Andrew Trainor and the CustomWorks crew when they did an extensive down-to-the studs renovation of our turn-of-the-century village colonial several years ago. The work was absolutely beautiful! We have continued to rely on Joe and CustomWorks for additional projects, most recently including an extensive repair of the surrounding soffit and replacement of all gutters prior to repainting the exterior of our house. I cannot stress how incredible Joe and his team are. Not only have they done unbelievably incredible work for me, but the personal touch they put on everything is wonderful. While Joe has a budget, and knows what I want done, he goes out of his way to text me photos of things in the house he's not 100% sure about, or to get my opinion on a selection of items, instead of just going ahead and doing what he thinks is best. We have weekly phone calls to go over the project, and he keeps me in the loop on everything regarding every person touching the project. He's an excellent communicator, and truly cares about his partners, and the work they do. More than once, Joe has called me to recommend I NOT spend extra money on something, and will tell me exactly why, and how he recommends a different, and sometimes less expensive, way to do it. He's not afraid to tell me if he's not sure of an answer, and you can bet that 30 minutes later, he'll call back after consulting every expert he knows. He set realistic expectations on timing and pricing, has stuck by the timeline, and has updated me at every step of the way. This honesty and trustworthiness goes a very long way. Aside from the absolutely beautiful work he's done in my home, working with Joe and his team has been an absolute pleasure, and I look forward to touching base with them every time. After a severe windstorm felled a tree which totaled my garage, my neighbor recommended Custom Works. My neighbor had a complete renovation of his house, so I felt very comfortable contacting them. Joe is wonderful to work with. He did a great job renovating our apartment and stayed with it to the end. He followed through on everything and was always anxious to be sure we were satisfied with the work. Joe's only issue is that he is very popular. I usually don't write public reviews but Customworks is an exceptional company and I felt compelled to share my experience. Over the years my husband and I have done many renovations to different homes we owned and are experienced in dealing with contractors and construction. Our experience with Customworks was outstanding and they were beyond a pleasure to deal with (and you can't often say that after a construction project). We renovated a bathroom with them and gutted it so we were basically starting from scratch. Joe and Andrew were on top of every detail of the project, immediately accessible when we had a question or concern and finished the project exactly when they said they would. They had great ideas which saved us from having to hire a designer. Would highly recommend this company!

We have used CustomWorks for work on an upscale Condo in a Brownstone on 1st block of Commonwealth Ave in Boston and more recently a brand new condo in the Seaport District at 22 Liberty. We have nothing but positive comments for CustomWorks led by Joe Trainor, as well as his team, in terms of professionalism and resulting work product. CustomWorks is incredibly timely and attentive to details. The quality of the work and the value received in terms of price is remarkable. Changes to project plans have been seamless and adjustments to cost/price reasonable. Lastly, I have never had to pick up the phone and track down CustomWorks. They have met all of their commitments in terms of delivery times, including submitting plans and dealing with housing regulators and building governance structures.

CustomWorks finished our basement and our 3d floor in our custom built home. They did a fabulous job and would absolutely recommend them. Joe and Andrew were consummate professionals. First, we had an architect working on our project and Joe worked very well with our architect. The level of finish work done by CustomWorks was equal in every way to the custom contractor who had originally built our home. On the financial side, Joe was very organized with a web based tool that we and our architect could review weekly. Additionally, Joe monitored progress vs our budget and when there were points where we wanted to expand the scope, he worked to find cost savings opportunities on other parts of the job to keep us in our budget envelop. Finally, Joe was excellent in his communication with us. If there was a gap in the schedule, he would let us know so we were never left wondering why the site was less busy than normal. If there was one minor complaint, it was that he did not seal off the area of our basement which were going to be undisturbed by work which resulted in dust collecting on the items that we had stored in that area. But this was a minor inconvenience relative to the quality of the work, the value that CustomWorks provided in terms of quality of the finished product, and Joe's work to keep us on budget and on time.

Working with Joe from Custom Works Contracting has been an amazing experience. In addition to his attention to detail and an unerring eye for how to take a high end design concept and help create the vision for the project in the most perfect way, Custom Works is also practical - they understand the dream vision you have and the reality of budget. We hired CustomWorks Contracting for a partial-home renovation including kitchen, 3.5 baths, family room and basement including installing a new HVAC system. My experience working with Joe Trainor at CustomWorks was great. From start to finish, Joe was attentive to the smallest detail while maintaining a strong handle on the big-picture issues. During the bidding process, he was the only contractor who spent much of the day at the house with his entire crew of subs to give a thorough estimate rather than a best-guess. He was easy to work with, worked well with our architect with whom he had never worked, was flexible to changes, and always presented logical suggestions that were in our best interest. He was fair and incredibly transparent in his business practices. Post-construction, he hasn't disappeared...he continues to return to get our punch-list taken care of. Any emergencies are taken care of promptly and with a smile - even at 10pm on a Friday night when Joe's crew was in our basement cleaning-up sewage that backed-into our basement from a block in the sewage pipe that was not caused by the construction or by any fault of CustomWorks. I am grateful to Joe and his team for this and for much more. Our house looks amazing now, and we are so happy that we selected CustomWorks to manage our project.

We recently completed an extensive, down to the studs, renovation of a turn-of-the-century home with CustomWroks. They are extraordinary craftsmen! I have worked with Joe and Andrew Trainor with CustomWorks Contracting for over 5 years. They are top-notch, ethical contractors who truly care and take pride in their work. My experience with CustomWorks Contracting has only been the best.. This renovation started out as a kitchen and master bath and evolved into the entire basement , the third floor suite and 2 new bathrooms..the attention to detail is tremendous.. cabinetry, their specialty, and most of all listening to what the clients goals are and helping them to achieve them. Followthrough is key in my mind, and they are completely responsive and keep you in the loop..The subcontractors they use are wonderful and again, listen to what is needed and make it happen..Quality of workmanship, product knowledge of what is out there , and working difficult situations , makes them one of the best. Projects: Complete renovation of walk-in attic space over attached 3 car garage - added a laundry room, home gym and closets. Also opened up wall and door leading to finished basement to create a more open stair and hall space. Renovated old laundry room into children's cubbies and added new cabinetry and sink. Added built-in cabinets into knee walls to create more storage space in hall outside master bedroom. Remedied (and repaired damage from) ongoing ice dam problem with full attic insulation and roof replacement plan. Joe and Andrew and their team are top notch. We had a lot going on simultaneously in several areas of our home and not once did it feel intrusive. All of the contractors were incredibly respectful of our home and left it very tidy after each day of work. Joe and Andrew had great suggestions and made lower-cost options available. This was our first major renovation and we were impressed by their professionalism and expertise. They are a pleasure to work with and came in on budget with no surprises. We are so pleased with their work that we plan to hire them to complete a kitchen renovation planned for next year.

The team at Custom Works was great to work with. Joe, Andrew and Chris did a fantastic job. Superb craftsmanship and all were willing to deviate from initial plan and devise alternatives when the job turned larger scale than initially anticipated. CustomWorks renovated two old bathrooms (circa early '70's), created a built-in desk and bookshelves, and did some finish work in basement. The workmen were always on-time, polite, and considerate of any mess that was made. The subcontractors that CustomWorks uses were also there when they were supposed to be and did wonderful work. The bathrooms are amazing as is the rest of the work completed by CustomWorks. I would readily recommend CustomWorks and would use them again.

We hired Customworks to do a complete renovation of our ground floor, a remodel of an additional bathroom, and the replacement of our HVAC system. It was a complex project and Joe and Andrew kept everything on track. Other than a few snags with subcontractors, the project went smoothly. The final outcome is exactly what we had hoped for. What separates Customworks from others we have worked with is that they are paying attention to details down the line in the process to detect issues prior to a mistake being made. Additionally, when construction professionals have dismissed my wife's contributions, Joe and Andrew listened and communicated with respect. They understood our vision and made suggestions along the way to make sure we got our finished product in the end.

The Customer Works team always provided more than one option to solving the problem, was transparent with respect to costs and other implications and then executed quickly. This group has the benefit of working together really well,while providing excellent service on multiple levels. They have a full compliment of trades (plumbing, electric, painters, builders etc) who are part of a team. They do not shy from suggestions, or recommendations. Their prices and quality of work is fair and well done. Their attention to small details is part of what brings me back to them time and again. Use them exclusively!!!! One example is that we had our floors done. The guys from CustomWorks came in to inspect, when they saw some things they did not like they had the floor guys come back twice and did not charge me. We also had them do our bAthrooms and basement, all well done.

Russ, their cabinet installer, is a true craftsman and really went out of his way to make sure everything was exact and he found practical and creative solutions - they even caught and fixed issues our kitchen designers did not. We hired CustomWorks to redo our family room / study in the Back Bay. We were extremely pleased with the firm's work, we would recommend them for any job, and I would re-hire them in a heartbeat. The team is professional, timely, and neat. They had a number of design suggestions that I appreciated (we paneled the study in mahogany and changed the window borders etc). They completed the work in a timely manner, and we ended up within budget, excluding the additional changes that I requested they make to the room (that was on me).

We can’t believe how lucky we were to have found Joe and Andrew Trainor and CustomWorks to work on our deck. Based solely on the recommendation of one person (our son’s friend) and after a visit to his deck, we chose CustomWorks to rebuild ours. We are absolutely delighted with the work they did, and only today, when looking up their website to recommend them to someone else, did I come across the incredible Reviews on the Houzz website. Although our project was small based on the scale of projects CustomWorks normally undertakes, the time and attention given to our project both in advance (countless correspondence regarding what materials to use, relative pricing, pros and cons of each) was superb, and we finally made our decision and the work began. All of the people who worked on our job were master craftsmen. If we were looking for one word to describe the entire project it is CARE. They really cared about what they were doing - paying attention to detail, making sure every nail was in the right place, that they arrived on time every day, always informed us as to what they would be doing that day, cleaned up before they left the premises each day, and produced a beautiful and perfect product. In addition, while planning this project, we had them match and extend a handmade oak railing in our home – and even though the first part was 25 years old, the new sections look like part of the original structure. Usually, when a contractor finishes your job, you are so happy to see them leave. In this case we only regret that we don’t have any more building projects at this time, because we would love to have them back again working for us! The Goldsteins

My wife and I came into this project with countless ideas but CustomWorks gets full credit for weaving them together and developing a plan and schedule that proved to work. So what makes a good contractor? 1) They are only as good as their team which you don't see during the bid process but CustomWorks is backed up by a detail oriented staff who were respectful, friendly and quickly felt like they were part of the family as they slipped through the back door each morning. 2) The quality of workmanship is at the top of my list. I skimped and performed the painting scope on my own and quickly found myself studying wood joints, ceiling plaster, door frames, hardware, and every other inch of this project and can honestly state that I did not surface any concerns with CustomWorks. I attribute this to their team's oversight of their sub-contractors and critiquing the work as its being done verses at the end of the overall project when it might be too late to correct the issue. The 'painter' was beyond pleased. 3) Price- The cost of the project is based on your plans, finishes and schedule but also change-orders. CustomWorks spent extra time upfront to identify any possible obstacles which allowed us to fully comprehend the budget verses other contractors who might remain tight lipped to underbid the competition and hit you up for costly change orders later. Beware of those contractors and instead lean towards honest guys like CustomWorks. They also seemed to always provide us with multiple options for ongoing decisions which put us in control of making the selection which we appreciated. 4) Schedule- While my wife was pleased to hear early on in the process that we shouldn't make plans to host Thanksgiving, we were recently provided the go ahead to move into these spaces two weeks before we expected. 5) Would I hire them again? I would highly recommend you consider CustomWorks for your next project. I am a hands-on guy who can be considered critical at times and without hesitation would hire this same crew if I were to do this all over again. 5+ stars.

I have both worked with this company as a designer AND have hired them to work on the two homes I have owned. Not only are Andrew and Joe very honest and trustworthy, but the subs they hire and just as fantastic. Their pricing is fair and they explain any changes in such detail that there are never surprises. They also work very hard to keep you in the loop which is not easy on larger projects.

This was our second experience with Custom Works. The first time, they were subcontracted to reno a brownstone for us. Our G.C. was a fraud. It was clear that Joe and Andrew ( who he had subcontracted ) were the real deal and honest and that they were the real experts and went out of their way to make up for the GC's lack of talent and integrity. We recently moved to an 1835 Greek Revival and did about 150K plus worth of renovations. These guys are simply ON it. Of course, there were hiccups, but Andrew really is right there all the time fully in the game and making things happen. He is honest, creative, and as my interior designer wife will attest, has good taste and instincts. He is like a liberal arts contractor. He knows everything. Straight shooters. Fun to work with. No B.S. And they both go above and beyond call of duty. Without question, when we decide to move on and redo something else, it will only be with Custom Works. They know their S#@t. Everyone who was involved in doing the work at my house was very professional. They arrived early most days and stayed late. They cleaned up after themselves every day. They were a pleasure to have around and answered all of my questions, no matter how big or small. I would definitely hire them again and again.

Everything from the start of my project to the end of the project was perfect. My roof was in bad shape from the winter storms. I have used Customworks Contracting for three large construction projects. Each one went fabulously. Joe, the owner, is great to work with. He is smart, responsive, fair and very easy going. Construction always has the chance of causing great tension, but Joe and his team are so on top of things, you should expect pretty smooth sailing. The quality of his work is awesome. I get compliments all the time about all of our projects. I have referred so many people to him because I truly believe he is an extraordinarily exceptional contractor. I especially like how fair and flexible he is with financial issues. He is always looking for ways to help me keep my costs down, is willing to work on either a fixed fee or time and materials basis and never nickels and dimes you. Each of my three projects was six figures and I did not have a single issue with the financial aspects of any of those projects. I should also point out that the subs that Joe works with on a consistent basis are top notch as well. My ongoing plumber, electrician, mason, painter, etc. are all people that I met when they worked on one of the larger projects run by Joe. He does not use anyone who does not share his vision of how to treat clients. Joe, his employees and his subs all treat my home like it was their own. They respect my property, clean up each day and try their best to blend in with the goings on around the house. I trust them with keys to the house, my alarm code, etc. I have nothing but the highest praise and recommendation for CustomWorks Contracting.

Joe and his crew were very professional, respectful and clean. The project was the lower level of our home. They made it seem as though they were not there. As we worked though the project changes it was very easy and hands off for us, but Joe did his best to complete the task with the same professional quality we agreed on in the beginning. The lower level; was to include entertainment area, full modern gym, sauna and spa, full bathroom with shower, glass enclosed wine room, wet bar, complete sound system and a complete cooling and heating system. This was a big project that lasted about 5 months and was completed to our great satisfaction. We'll be using CustomWorks for other projects in the future.

We hired CustomWorks to renovate our kitchen and dining room. The project grew to include a redo of stairwells, gas fireplace install and new mudroom entrance. We also switched our house over from oil to gas and Customworks handled all the details of the conversion. The work was beautifully done. The workmen started on time, handled inevitable complications well and kept us informed. We went over budget with our additions but all costs quoted were honored. All the workmen were respectful and talented.
