Our job is to bring the architect's vision to fruition exactly as they conceived it. We never build the same thing twice. Each project involves creative engineering, alternative materials and innovative techniques. We are constantly learning and refining.

Founded in 2001 by Gary Maynard and his wife Kristina Kinsman, Holmes Hole Builders evolved from the couple's lifelong love of the sea and the logical progression of Gary's unusual career, first as a commercial sailor on tall ships, then as a wooden boat and ship builder, and finally as an elite custom home builder.

Holmes Hole delivers beautiful craftsmanship and top-notch professionalism. They delivered a team of skilled and smart workers for our project. The result is that we have a renovated old house which retained its charm while giving us modern amenities. Everyone who walks into our home comments on how they can't believe the transformation. Specific standouts include Holmes Hole's cabinetry and creative approach to installing HVAC in an old house without a basement. Gary, Kristi and their team also happen to be wonderful people to boot. I recommend them without reservation.

We did a tear-down and new house project in Chilmark with HHB. We have only the most positive things to say about Gary and Kristina Maynard and their crew at HHB. It was a large and complex project. HHB, along with Hutker Architects and our interior designer Laura Meyer, navigated all aspects of our project in the most comprehensive and professional manner possible. The results are stunning. We have an incredibly beautiful house, inside and out. The workmanship is absolutely fantastic. Our house is very modern, so any slight blemish or misalignment is obvious. There are none. HHB did the project in a relatively short period of time (for MV) and with a relatively small amount of our involvement. Finally, in the three years since the house was finished we have had very few issues. In each case HHB has proactively jumped in and just taken care of things based on their approach of "it should have been right in the first place". The result has been a truly trouble-free house. Gary, Kristina and HHB have been a true pleasure to work with. We are happy to provide references for HHB.

We hired HHB for our large project on Martha's Vineyard. We were attracted to them because of the high quality of some of their other work. In addition, Gary's background as a boatbuilder was perfect for our complex wooden design. We were very satisfied with their work on our home and maintain an active, positive relationship with them.
Our project was complicated, involving the removal of an existing structure and building a new home inside a limited envelope. There were thousands of details to get right. Our HHB foreman was a master and their craftsmen and office staff were great.
We don't live on the island full time; this is a second home. We could not monitor every step of the project ourselves. We came to trust HHB to execute the work and raise to us relevant issues. When problems did arise, Gary and his team communicated them to us and we figured them out as a group.
It was a great experience working with HHB. We could not recommend them more highly.

When we decided to build our home on Chappy we wanting the A team involved to avoid any difficulties in completing the job on time, on budget and with the finest of craftsmanship and design. I interviewed three Builders including Holmes Hole. The other two Builders budgeted on a cost plus basis but I wanted to lock the budget down to avoid surprises. Holmes Hole has a history of bidding projects with a fixed budget and the talk we got from the different trades and architects on MVY was that Gary and his team built their reputations on being able to execute on budget and on time and that their customers were generally very pleased with them. Holmes Hole bid was competitive with the other builders ‘estimates’ so we pulled the trigger with Gary and his team.
We have all heard over the years, and some of us have experienced, the terrible stories about Builders and their inability to finish jobs or simply walking away from their responsibilities ending up in law suits. The industry is froth with flaky workers and principals. My experience with Gary and his team was nothing like this. In our view, Holmes Hole has great integrity. Everything they said they were going to do they did. All of my needs were met and exceeded throughout the process. I challenged Gary with a very strict schedule and he and and his team of Rick, Hudson and others responded with positive attitudes and energy.
It was a joy doing a project with Gary and his team and I would gladly recommend them to anyone considering building a home on Martha’s Vineyard.

Holmes Hole built our modern house, from the ground up. We couldn't be happier with the result or with the process. They are a first-class outfit, and I've never had a project go so smoothly.
- Their staff were total professionals, and their workmanship was excellent. We've had a few friends over who are knowledgeable craftsmen, and they all admired the work.
- The project management was terrific. The project manager was superb, and he kept things well coordinated. Any required decisions were anticipated and highlighted early.
- The communications with the architect was flawless. They spoke several times each week, leading to a very smooth process.
- The invoices were totally transparent, and detailed. We received copies of every subcontractor's bill, and there were no surprises at all on the billing front.
- They readily repaired a few items that needed adjustments (even after the punch list phase), and have continued to be totally responsive to any issues.
i would recommend them highly.

Holmes Hole Builders built a custom home for our family on Martha's Vineyard. We had an excellent experience - very high quality craftsmanship, on budget and on time completion. The crew on site was responsive and always aiming to please. Gary Maynard and his office were on top of details throughout the project and provided great value. Gary Maynard, the principal at Holmes Hole Builders, was highly recommended to us by several very discriminating friends who had used his company to build their second homes on Martha's Vineyard. After meeting with a few builders on the island, we chose Gary/Holmes Hole to renovate our 2d home on the Vineyard, and have been -- without reservation -- extremely pleased and happy with the entire construction experience. Gary and his team are smart, thoughtful, conscientious, hardworking, talented, honest, reliable and fair, and throughout the year long renovation we pursued from our home off island we were able to timely accomplish the changes, updates, and new construction that needed to occur to achieve our vacation home dream on the Vineyard. Gary's Holmes Hole crew understood our needs every step of the way, and were able to make insightful suggestions when they thought that aspects of the architect's design did not meet our personal style, which ended up saving money along the way. Gary's own carpenters are exceptional and all the cabinetry built in house by them was of the highest quality. Gary's subs worked well with Holmes Hole, and when there were issues, the subs, who greatly respect Gary and his business, were immediate to resolve any concerns. Gary sets a high standard for himself and his team, and is a business man who values his word and his relationships. We highly recommend Gary and his team at Holmes Hole, and have no reservations in stating that he would be our absolute first choice in any future construction/design work we might have.

Gary Maynard of Holmes Hole Builders was the general contractor for the construction of my home on Martha's Vineyard. Although it was a very large project, Gary promised me a quick completion date due to an illness in our family. Not only did his crew complete the job in the promised amount of time, but 10 years later, I can confidently state that the work was of the highest quality. I have had relatively few maintenance work, and even after all this time, Gary stands by his work. On the rare occasion that I have found a problem with the original construction, Gary has repaired the problem in a timely fashion at no cost. He carefully chose his sub-contractors, who treated my home respectfully. In fact, they were a pleasure to have around. Finally, Holmes Hole was not the highest bid for the job, so I really felt I was getting my money's worth. I have not hesitated to recommend this builder to friends who have engaged him with great satisfaction.
