Maui Joinery remodeled our Maui Meadows home in 2019 and did a great job. Our job site was on a hill at the top of a steep drive so getting heavy equipment and materials to the site was difficult. However, they found a way to get the job done on schedule. Doug, Matt & Dave are brothers and skilled contractors who hire great workers around them (Scottie, Pete, Matt G.) with similar skills, work ethics and values (I overpaid once and had money promptly returned to me). Matt, our project lead was particularly skilled, knowledgeable and easy to work with. As with every remodel, a couple of issues came up after completion. They took care of the issues quickly and without question. Five stars to a great bunch of guys.

As architects we are fortunate to get to work with many contractors and on lots of projects. We have worked with Doug and his crew of guys on at least 6 large projects with a wide range of project scopes and they are located mostly in South Kihei, Wailea and Makena. The projects range from the very extensive remodel of an existing Wailea Kai home to the ground up new construction of the Stein Residence both of which are showcased on Houzz. There is also a project on Halama Street which is possibly the most extensive and also complicated home overhaul that we have done. The reason Maui Architectural Group chooses to go back to Doug and Maui Joinery is because they are one of the Best Builders on Maui. Doug is a no nonsense guy and he runs a tight and efficient crew that is able take on up to 5 major single family home projects at a time. I personally like to work on projects with Doug because he is so great with our clients that we are essentially able to entrust our clients to Doug and know that he will make sure that the finishes, fixtures and fine details get built customized to that clients needs. The relationship between the Owner/Architect/Contractor needs to be something that is enjoyable, positive and often life long. I appreciate that I do not receive multiple calls asking about medicine cabinet blocking heights or minor details that do not affect the architectural design intent. Doug and his crew at Maui Joinery are a pleasure for me and my clients to work with. My only hesitation in writing this review is the thought of Doug being too busy to take on our next fun, complicated but exciting project. We hired Maui Joinery to completely renovate a 4,000 square-foot two-story home, top to bottom. They did a phenomenal, first class job. Doug and his team are artists, builders, and excellent project managers. My deepest gratitude has been the follow through. After any large job there will be items that need a tweak or adjustment, and Doug has been there, regardless of the sub contractor involved, to get things perfect and stand behind his work. We hired Doug Ruppenthal, President of Maui Joinery Inc., to do an extensive remodel, of our condo at the Royal Mauian. Doug and his crew of professionals gave us a new and upgraded look, for our condo. The Maui Joinery crew was great to work with and completed the project in a timely manner and within budget. Shirlaw and I were fortunate to have found Doug Ruppenthal and Maui Joinery to build our Wailea custom home. It was done in nine months, right on schedule and faster than typical houses in this area; and with care to suit our wants and needs. We are very pleased with the work and Doug's timely advice and organization throughout the project. His team built a terrific customized kitchen, fine mahogany trim, red cedar jalousies, 18-foot t&g ceiling on custom timber trusses, huge decks and custom stainless steel cable-railings. We held close to a tight budget, expanded somewhat to encompass a pool, finer finishes, and some additional living space. Maui Joinery Inc. has an incredibly intelligent and talented crew. They work smart, with up-to-date equipment, are knowledgeable about current trends, build straight, are honest, and are extremely accommodating. Originally, the main house and the separate guest ohana were going to be constructed separately due to time constraints involving the wedding reception, at our house, of our friends from China and Denmark; a really big deal. Somehow, even with too much rain, they completed both projects before the wedding and we were able to use them for guests. Building the house was wonderful, difficult, and at times frustrating. One other trait of all the guys at Maui Joinery is a good sense of humor and true camaraderie that helps at tense moments, as when a door is missing or the tile is back ordered. I love the house, and know that the creative genius of Doug and Matt and Dave and Matt 2 and Johnny, made it work and even turned possible issues into great design.
