MOKULUA High Performance Builder

I just worked with Mike on a major remodel on a house in Kailua during which time I was primarily in the Bay Area. It was my 5th project working with General Contractors. Mike was among the best. He is a contentious professional with a strong work ethic and high moral character. He has selected superior subcontractors and knows how to keep a job going. While I made decisions remotely, he kept me informed about the project status, including sending me progress photos along the way and gave me endless contacts on Oahu from which to select the finish items I needed to complete the project. We actually finished the project on schedule, which I understand is a near miracle on the Island. I appreciate his attention to aesthetics and follow through with vendors and also the fact he truly cares about doing things the right way. Highly recommended for professionalism and character. The result is a beautiful home we can both be proud of.

When I tell people how thrilled I was with MHPB's as our contractor, they respond with "I have never heard of anyone being happy with a contractor!!" Well, we are! Top notch company and great team to work with!! They really listened to us and they valued our questions or concerns. The team was responsive above and beyond my expectations: On time with schedule, on budget, managed unexpected glitches with determination to problem solve in timely manner, quality workmanship, & strong relationship with sub contractors. Not only are the guys on site hard workers, but trustworthy and delightful to be around! Client satisfaction is their overall goal and they held true to that promise!

Mokulua did a superior job in all respects. The project involved renovating a three bedroom condo, including small wall adjustments, installing multiple built-in cabinets and bookcases, replacing doors and trim, some rewiring for ethernet/telephone/TV, and a complete kitchen remodel. The whole team was a pleasure to deal with. The budget and a rough timetable were clearly laid out before a contract was signed, so there were no unpleasant surprises. As a eco-sensitive builders, Mokulua suggested ways to reduce waste and increase energy efficiency. The quality of workmanship and attention to detail was exceptional. The on-site supervisor, Barry, did a beautiful job installing the extensive woodwork - mitering corners of baseboard, matching lined of wood grain, meticulously scribing two huge desktops to fit against undulating walls. I also appreciated that the job site was always left clean and organized at the end of every day. I wouldn't hesitate to use Mokulua again for any building project.

To say that we wouldn't have our home without Mokulua is an understatement. Living in a very small, older home and fixer-upper for eight years while going through various life and family changes, we felt it was finally time in 2008 to pursue our dream to rebuild. We wanted a structurally sound home that would also provide for more family living space . We took a good year or so to do even more intensive researching and interviewed countless contractors. It was during this time that we first connected with Mike and Mokulua High Performance Builders...we didn't know it at the time, but this would change our lives. After going through the smooth and positive design and permitting process with Mokulua, we were finally ready to build. We were devastated when everything came to a halt as we got caught in the new stricter lending requirements when the housing bubble burst. We couldn't even look at our building plans anymore and had pretty much given up. Fast forward a year, when we received a call from Mike. He asked if we still wanted to try and move forward with the project. He shared with us newer, innovative and efficient building strategies that had since come to light and worked really hard to incorporate these strategies into a new and revised building plan. These changes brought the budget down, while still giving us the home we always dreamed of. One of the most important factors to us in initially selecting a contractor was TRUST. In meeting with and getting to know Mike and his staff, their integrity, solid values and work ethic, and concern for what was best for our 'ohana and the environment at all times was evident, and we knew that we could truly trust them in moving forward. Once we determined this trust, everything else, in our mind, was "icing on the cake." This trust and display of true character was evident throughout the entire period of time when we had given up and Mike and Mokulua worked hard and with us to make our project happen. Mokulua is exceedingly innovative and passionately committed to efficiency and high performance green building. They are creative, forward-thinking, and have an ultimate "can do" attitude. Although there were ups and downs along the way as with any rebuild, we were supported every step of the way by Mokulua and their awesome team. From Mike as company owner, to Doug as project manager, to Joleen as office manager/administrator, to Jay as project foreman, to the project's various workers and subcontractors - true care, pride, and quality workmanship was apparent in every way. Our home is now truly our "forever home" that we plan to share and enjoy with our children for many years to come. We still pinch ourselves to make sure we're not dreaming! We'll always have such gratitude and aloha for Mokulua, for the work that they do, and for providing our 'ohana with our future. They are truly the best! I really loved the "package" Mokulua brings with them to a project. They are more than just a contractor doing a project for a client. Mokulua has a great foundation of communication, which is very important to us, and have qualified individuals at every level of the company. Their carpenters are extremely knowledgable, courteous and personable, which is very refreshing. This character remains consistent through the company, with a very sophisticated project management set up that ensured we were consistent with the schedule, expectations and the budget!! We even got a credit at the end of the project because Mokulua approached the project from a top down cost perspective vs. giving a low bid and "dinging" us for every little addition. In sum Mokulua is a refreshing change of pace to contracting... not to mention they truly embrace, understand and are committed to the environment (via green building) and do so without compromising the budget.
