Sceltas recently constructed an addition/ renovation to my house in Mount Pleasnt. It was built on time and under budget. The level of craft was high and I would absolutely recommend him!

James contacted us to work with him and create a butcher block countertop for a house they were building. They provided all the information that we needed fast and accurately! They have become a company that we work with on a regular basis and we couldn't be happier about working with them more!

I was hired by Sceltas to assist them by working with the clients to select finishes for their home within the builder allowances. Jamey makes the process so easy for designers, like myself, to coordinate information and give the client a beautiful home within a realistic budget provided. He knows what it takes to get the job done while making sure each project has important characteristics and details the client will appreciate. I thoroughly enjoy collaborating him on projects and am looking forward to our next project together. I absolutely love working with Jamey and would recommend him to anyone who is in need of a renovation project or is ready to built their dream home.

Received an estimate
We decided to add space to our home and redesign the existing floor plan. We looked at Houzz for many months. We then had an architect redesign our current home. We found Jamie from Sceltas Build + Consult on Houzz and met with him over the Spring and Summer of 2015 about our renovation project. We never met with anybody else at Sceltas, just Jamie. We had several face to face meetings with Jamie and he had several conversations with our architect. Jamie seemed to be very knowledgeable and easy to get along with so we were sold on using him even before we got his bid. All of a sudden, he stopped communicating. He didn't return phone calls, emails or texts. We tried to contact him dozens of times over 2 months. We thought, maybe he had some personal tragedy. We liked Jamie and were genuinely concerned that something bad had happened with him or his family. We then saw on line that he had other projects in process in the area and that he had an ongoing project a few blocks from us.
We can only assume that he simply wasn't interested in our project for whatever reason. Project cost was around $200k which is right in his zone. Maybe he just didn't feel like it was the right project or the right time for him. Which is fine. Here's where I have a BIG PROBLEM. All he had to do was communicate that he wasn't going to be able to do the project. One phone call, one email, a text even. Something. We got nothing. I've been in the business world for 30 years. Effective communication is a key element in any business.
I hope others read this post and take it to heart. So many times, we go against our inner voice and make the wrong decision. If you are considering this firm, consider this. If you feel it's important for someone that's building or renovating your house to call you back, then don't work with this company. If you're reading this Jamie, I hope you learn a lesson. If you want to be a grown up business person, you need to communicate with people. Good news or bad news, just communicate.

I’ll start with the positive: we are happy with the way our addition turned out from a design and construction standpoint. It looks good, and we came in slightly under budget. That said, we would never rehire or recommend Sceltas. Here’s why:
- We were originally told that our addition would take 4-5 months. It ended up taking 7, due to unexplained long periods of time in between phases. There were weeks where literally no work would be done and we would have no communication from Sceltas. We understand that there are always delays during construction projects. What we don’t understand is the total lack of communication and professionalism we experienced.
- Our project was never finished - Sceltas completely disappeared on us without installing our fireplace hearth or doing the exterior stucco work. At this point we've decided to just move on. We were also left to clean up a large portion of the construction debris ourselves.
- Multiple subcontractors complained to us directly about lack of communication and delayed payment from Sceltas. We have been trying to get lien releases from Sceltas for two months to show that subcontractors were paid, but Sceltas will not respond to multiple calls, texts or emails.
- Sceltas bills itself as a team of people, but it’s actually just one guy. Throughout the process we only saw the other partner once, when he and his wife came to our house with HGTV producers to potentially use our house in the pilot for their HGTV show. The premise would be that we would pretend to buy our house that we’ve lived in for 5+ years, and then the crew would film our addition project plus additional work at the discretion and cost of the producers. Fortunately for us this didn’t end up happening, and again was handled in a very unprofessional manner.
Again, from a strictly design and construction standpoint we would have been happy clients. Due to the lack of communication, inept project management and unprofessionalism at the end of the project, we are not happy clients.

Comment from Sceltas Custom Homes:
Thank you for taking the time to honestly and thoughtfully review our company. I want you to know that your comments provided a true opportunity for us to learn, grow, and improve as a company. As a direct result of your feedback, I have implemented new policies and procedures for consistent and satisfactory communication so that no client has to experience frustration with his/her project as you unfortunately did. These include:
- A weekly, project specific email that sets goals, timelines, meetings etc. throughout the project so that any issues can be handled as they arise as well as ensure our clients are able to celebrate the many successes of a project that are otherwise hidden from the typical Client/ Builder relationship.
- Weekly face to face meetings to go over the project and insure everyone is on the same page.
- Holding subcontractors monetarily accountable for preventable delays.
- Lien waiver given to every client at the conclusion of each project along with their warranty for the work completed.
We have received great feedback from our current clients in regards to these improvements and we will continually strive to insure that client communication is as high of a priority as our craftsmanship.
I am truly sorry for any delays and communication issues created by myself or others while navigating the potential HGTV show during your project. Additionally, thank you for giving us the opportunity to address your concerns with the stucco finish on the exterior of the home and your hearth. I'm very happy that we were a part of ultimately creating a wonderful space for you and your family to live and create many lasting memories. We hope you enjoy your finished product and, as always, we are here if any additional concerns should arise.
Thank you again,
Jamey Arthur

Jamey expertise and construction knowledge were instrumental in completing this project. Sceltas was invited to join the project after construction had begun and they were able to hit the ground running, adhering to a demanding construction schedule and providing high quality work. Jamey and his subcontractors diligently performed their work and offered alternative cost saving/time saving ways to keep the project on track.

We hired Sceltas to build an addition onto our home. From the initial consult to the finished product, Jamey Arthur and his team at Sceltas were incredible to work with. We received a detailed estimate and design that we were extremely pleased with. Jamey brought several options to us for how to better maximize the space. We appreciated that he took the time to think of ways to improve the project. All of his workers were professional, on-time and hardworking. Our project completed on schedule and within budget. We were very pleased. We would highly recommend Jamey Arthur and Sceltas for any construction projects, and we will definitely work with him again.

I contracted with Sceltas, owner Jamie Arthur, in the spring of 2014 to do a renovation on my parent's 60 year old home in Mt Pleasant SC. The project was a major one. The house was totally gutted, most walls moved and the upstairs of the house nearly doubled in size. I have a fairly good knowledge of construction and design and was involved in the process from start to finish, making every decision regarding design, finishes, and the many details that can make a home function for the people who will live there. Jamie truly enriched what I brought to the table with a sharp knowledge of current trends and the latest products that worked for this renovation. Being fifth generation Charlestonians we appreciated his a eyes for incorporating classic southern touches. Jamey's most important attribute was his need for quality work. He insisted on nothing less than a job done right..
Jamie was a true gentleman with whom to work. He was always patient and always quick to return a call. His employees and sub-contractors were all professional and pleasant. Being a renovation we ran across several unexpected structural issues. Jamie had good solutions each time a problem arose. Jamie was diligent in completing the punch list.
Jamie would be my go to guy if we ever do another renovation or have the opportunity to build something new.
Thanks Jamey

Jamey did an excellent job with the design of our back yard patio. He not only focused on the outdoor area of our home for the project but also came to us with recommendations on how to smoothly transition to the new space from our kitchen and den. He incorporated everything we wanted (which was a long list) and was very timely in response. We look forward to working with him and Sceltas on the construction phase of the project as well as other home projects we have in the works - kitchen and addition.
