“We really enjoyed working with NEDC, from start to finish. The designers were wonderful about accommodating our tastes and considering costs as we tried to stretch our budget as much as we could. They also did a great job helping us figure out some features of universal design that will allow friends and family with mobility challenges to access our whole first floor, including the new bathroom, with ease without compromising the look of the room for our everyday use. The construction crew, from NEDC staff to subcontractors, was extremely considerate of the fact that we were living in the space while they were working, going so far as to leave a very clean workspace at the end of every day. Everyone was personable and professional, and did their best to manage even small details like making sure our cat didn't get into the basement. Our old house held many surprises for us, and in spite of that they managed to come in on schedule, which was amazing, and they were always great about communicating what these surprises would mean in terms of changes in schedule, budget, etc. In terms of finishes, their work is top quality, and they have been great about correcting even small cosmetic issues, ensuring that our home looks just as we hoped. They have taken a very tired old building and turned it into a beautiful, functional space that we are proud to call home.”

“We hired Fresh Start Contracting for renovations to our new South Boston condo in the Spring of 2014. From the beginning they provided me with a detailed estimate and job scope. Their responsiveness was very good and quite impressive. They were brought in through an interior designer we had hired and they worked as a team the entire way through. Ben O’Sullivan-Pierce, the owner, worked with us to put together the plan and carried that plan all the way through to the end. Custom work such as new cabinetry (built to match), stainless steel supports for the island and glass backsplashes in the kitchen were the result of this. All of the workmen and subcontractors worked hard and professionally every day they were there. Our building has some rules to abide by that makes it harder for contractors to coordinate their projects—Fresh Start worked with them to ensure the work was done and kept the peace with the building management. Throughout the project, whenever there were hiccups, Fresh Start handled those issues professionally and rationally offering us options and taking all corrective action necessary. In the end, the result is that our new condo has been beautifully put together and modernized! We enjoyed working with Ben and his team at Fresh Start and would use them again in the future.””

“We hired JP Hoffman to remodel our kitchen and laundry room. Our house was built in 1780, and if we hadn't worked with Jason previously and recognized his abilities, we likely would've never attempted the remodel. There were a number of known issues with the space, and many 'unknowns' due to the age of the house. Jason and his team are committed to quality, and worked closely with us to ensure the end result blended seamlessly with the rest of the house. What we most appreciated was his ability to trouble-shoot issues and develop cost conscious, creative solutions while meeting all building code standards. We were kept informed throughout the project, so there were no surprise costs or time delays. We have recommended JP Hoffman several times, and would definately work with them again.”

“It was a really lucky day when I asked our mechanic if he knew a good contractor, and he gave us Steve’s name. He is very knowledgeable, creative, highly skilled, incredibly hard working, meticulous in his attention to detail, punctual, flexible, honest, and a real pleasure to have around – by far the best contractor we have ever had! There was a ramshackle, enclosed porch attached to the back of our 160-year-old house that had no heat and was beginning to rot. Steve tore it down, opened up the back wall of the house and rebuilt the old footprint as a kitchen extension, transforming a dingy, unusable space into a stunning enhancement to our house, with skylights and floor to ceiling windows on three sides, creating bright and beautiful areas for sitting, as well as eat-in dining. The addition is also highly energy efficient, with numerous small touches that are hidden (most contractors probably wouldn’t have done them) but provide additional weatherization and other benefits. During our negotiations, Steve provided detailed plans and graphic CAD drawings of our new space, before we committed to building. We told him what we wanted and how much we could spend; he listened and then figured out a way to provide a high-quality space for just that price. He limited the disruption to our lives and was very sensitive to green issues, including limiting toxicity to protect my chemically-sensitive wife. He also protected our existing garden that we had spent years developing, not an easy task since our garden adjoined the space he tore down and rebuilt, and it was a very small work area. Steve had terrific people working for him who were uniformly polite and hardworking. The project ended up right on budget, with additional costs only for things we added. We are ecstatic about our new space that greatly enhances the quality of our lives on a daily basis, and we loved working with Steve, from start to finish. He gets an A+!”

“Over the last 15 years, Scott has built a major addition on our previous house, plus two full bathroom renovations, and re-inforcement of a poorly-built garage (saving thousands - didn't need to be demolished). In between, whenever we had any issues with the house such as ice dam leaks, AC issues, electrical needs, he was always able to help. When we were ready to put the house on the market, he sent some of his team to prepare the house for selling. We moved to a new house. We have a one-car garage and decided to have storage units and shelves installed. We contacted Scott and one other company - in this case, a well-known building retail store. Scott proposed building large storage units with doors from scratch; fully utilizing the space between the corners and window trim; and allowing for storage of the garbage cans underneath. He also proposed using the length of the garage for shelves and accessories. The retail store proposal offered ready-made cabinetry with fixed dimensions and shelving in 4 + 8 feet lengths. Although their proposal was a few hundred dollars less than Scott, we would be getting a lot less storage, as the retail store had to work within the parameters of their unit dimensions. Also the quality of the finished product would not be as good. We selected Scott. We now have great storage space that I still haven't fully utilized. The installation went very well, the carpenter was neat and cleared all debris. The job came in on budget. As usual, we are fully satisfied with the quality of Scott and his team's work. I can't stress enough how invaluable the relationship has been over the years for us.”

“Anita Colby owner of The Cabinetworks is a genius. She can walk into a room and see what no one else can. She walked into a house that I had just bought in a short sale. It had been abandoned by the previous owners and had a kitchen stripped of appliances and fixtures and a jagged corian countertop island. I asked Anita for renovation suggestions. She asked me a lot of questions to get an understanding of how I cooked, what was important to me in a kitchen and what my taste was like. She went home and at 3 am I received an email from her telling me she had designed a new kitchen and the drawings were attached. It was absolutely incredible I was dumbfounded! We ended up gutting the original structure and building a designer show house kitchen like none other. My kitchen has been invited to be on numerous kitchen tours although I have only accepted one and the feedback has been amazing. My kitchen is not only beautiful and unique but totally efficient and user friendly. Anita thought of everything to enable me to cook and entertain like Martha Stewart or Mario Battali! Anita has a gift that you will never find anywhere else. She can look at a space in any condition and visualize the finished product which she professional draws herself to scale. Her kitchen designs are very special and speak to your heart and soul. One more very important fact to consider : Anita has very good connections with high quality vendors and contractors that work hand in hand with her to insure a superior outcome.”
