“In the past we used a design/build company and did not feel that we had control over the process or the budget. When we reviewed the bill we found the mark-up was excessive, especially when sub-contractors were used for most of the work. This time around we chose to use Chad with Arlington Construction Mangement because of the ability to control expenses, choose the products used in building our addition and select our own sub-contractors. The ability to get several estimates and meet the subs for each trade beforehand made a huge difference in our experience. We completed our project 2 months earlier than predicted and were able to stay within budget. We ended up saving 28% from our lowest bid and we were able to use upgraded products along the way. Chad gave us great advice, support and knowledge to help us through our project. I know we would not have received the same personal service from any other builder. We would use Chad again and would highly recommend him to anyone looking into building.”

“OPal not only builds beautiful homes that are thoughtfully designed and constructed, but they operate with unprecedented professionalism and pride in their craftsmanship. They take the time to review the details and systems within their homes so that the owner fully understands how to best take care of their investment for years to come. They empower owners to not just love their new home, but to understand how it works and why it was built with the consideration it was and what that means for the long term. We didn't buy just a beautiful, well proportioned home, we invested in a home that was built with efficiency and technological advancement as the foundation with a special focus on the details and consideration to the material selections. Our experience has been the BEST, and coming from an interior designer who has worked in the industry for 8 years, I didn't know I could be "wowed" on the subject I study daily.”

“I am a designer for a custom closet company. I have been working with Francisca Alonso of AV Architects on various projects since 2006. I love collaborating with her because she is extremely easy to work with and the projects always go very smoothly. I HIGHLY recommend Francisca Alonso and AV Architects. They do some amazing renovations and are a fantastic company to deal with.”

“Gutted the kitchen and did a complete remodel. Original kitchen was u-shape with an island squaring it off. Issues: The oven was next to refrigerator; pipes of the sink located on outside wall kept freezing in extreme weather; cooktop on island made cooking difficult, could barely boil water; limited counter space; dated white cabinets; and built in desk that was no longer useful. The design called for moving double oven to opposite wall of kitchen, relocated pipes from outside wall by bringing them up from floor, moved cooktop off island to against side wall, pushed island back to create more floor space, custom cabinets with granite countertops, and a beverage bar with sink. The existing ceramic tile is in good shape and we wanted to keep it. It turns out that keeping the flooring was almost a deal breaker. We began making selections... custom design natural stained maple cabinets in transitional style; stainless steel appliances, granite. When we went for flooring, we were told that the existing tile was too old to withstand the cuts necessary to add decorative touches which would cover holes/ broken tiles when building the new island. Between Jeff & sub contractor, a compatible tile was used to look like a rug and the island was placed on it. It turned out to be one of my favorite things. Jeff Musser, owner, provided a great design that satisfied work flow and efficiency/space issues. He surrounds his business with quality sub contractors. He works within budget and time restraints. And, finally, he makes customers aware of the process and sets a schedule so expectations are realistic. No disappointments here. Musser Builders are the best!”

SEKAS HOMES LTD
San Mar, MD Home Builders
June 27, 2013
“When my wife and I decided to move from Western Fairfax to the Vienna/Oakton region, we did not initially consider building a home. Instead, we looked at probably 30-40 used homes in the area selling in the school districts and price range we wanted. Over time, we started to notice the names of home builders. It turned out a number of the homes we liked the most were Sekas homes. We liked the layout, the location, and most especially, the quality. His 10-15 year old homes looked brand new (structurally). I was impressed that his work would stand the test of time like that. As we started looking more closely at the builder, we discovered that he had a number of new construction projects that were within our price range. With that discovery, we decided, "Why compromise with an older home when we can buy brand new and have it exactly the way we want?" We signed the contract last fall and have now lived in our new Sekas home for just over 30-days. From then until today, the process of building our home has been outstanding. Let me give you some specifics: We wanted a pool to be built in conjunction with the home. I have read many horror stories about pools and pool companies and we wanted Sekas to take on that risk. We were willing to pay him the extra money so that he would ensure it was done right. Result: Our pool is beautiful - we couldn't be happier - and the Sekas staff ensured every aspect of the project (deck, patio, coping, tile, fence, electrical, plumbing, etc) met county code requirements and was finished on time and in a quality manner. The most important reason I believe this company produces such a good product is its people. I call tell John Sekas invests a good amount of time and energy into ensuring everyone on his team (from the plumber to his design specialist) deliver consistent quality. The 6-month process of building a home is truly a relationship. And like any other relationship, you see the best and worst in people over that time during stressful situations. The Sekas team certainly had to deal with the worst of myself and my wife on numerous occasions. I could tell they were used to dealing with Type-A personalities and actually took pride in delivering exactly what we wanted. The selection process is daunting. My biggest recommendation is to do as much homework as possible before signing the contract. Once it's signed, Sekas was off to the races and the construction process progresses VERY quickly. We were still researching the type of bathtubs we wanted when the plumber was ready for his final county inspection. Regardless, Sekas worked with us and everything worked out fine even when we were late (they were never late). Their designer, Betsy, is an amazing person. She has a LOT on her plate yet somehow keeps it all straight and has the patience of an angel. One aspect of the company I really appreciated was their willingness to make changes without nickel and dimeing us on everything. We completing changed the layout of the basement. No charge. We completely changed the layout of the master bath and walk-in closets. No charge. We made late changes to appliances, garage doors, brick, and tile - again no charge. They came close to charging us a few times (when it looked like they had already ordered the product we originally requested) but they worked things out with their distributors and we got off without penalty. Regarding the warranty period - I have had to make several minor warranty calls already. The contractors seemed to go out of their way to give me priority and take care of my issue - I think they value working with Sekas and don't want him upset with their service. Additionally, the Sekas team have made it clear that I could simply call them if I need any warranty work. I choose to call the contractors directly so I can set up a date and time that is best for me (instead of working though the middle man back and forth). The bottom line is I am convinced John Sekas stands behind his product and will do everything reasonable to ensure the customer is happy. The reason we went with Sekas was the quality of his product. By looking at his 10-15 year old homes I could tell they were built to last. Now that I have a new one of my own (and watched it being built from the ground up) I can honestly say I feel ever stronger about that belief. Everyone who has visited our home has been blown away with their attention to detail, design, and the home's superb features. We certainly got our money's worth. I highly recommend Sekas Homes. I love my new house!”

“We built our first house ourselves 33 years ago and I have been dreaming of building another house ever since. Finally we were going to build our dream house after collecting notes for all those years and working with an architect for the last 4 years. Since I manage programs for a living and am a detail-oriented person, my husband wondered whether any builder would embrace my level of participation and meet my standards. After much searching and many interviews we selected Charlie Little of Fairhaven Homes in Round Hill Virginia as person who was going to see us through the whole process beginning to end. We broke ground in August 2009. Recently, when I met a friend for lunch and she asked “So tell me all the horror stories about your builder”, and I had to honestly say that I don’t have any. She was surprised and asked how could that be? It all comes down to the person who is responsible for making it happen. Charlie Little made it happen by being: Our advocate and being very cost conscious with his experienced stable of vendors and contractors. He fights for quality materials, quality work, and fair prices as if it were his own home. He has made significant recommendations about how to make the house energy efficient and low maintenance. When the mechanical crew, dropped our furnace, he made them take it out and replace it. When the concrete was incorrectly poured for the front porch, he made them fix it. Really engages with us. He wants very much to understand what we want and to make it happen for us. When circumstances come up, we discuss it as a team and we make a decision based on facts, constraints and cost. We talk almost every day with lots of e-mails in-between. He has been amazingly transparent about the process; giving us a detailed schedule and costing that get updated. We even get copies of certain invoices so we know exactly what the vendors are charging us. Very creative and detail-oriented, always giving us options based on his years of experience. When we had an issue with positioning a duct in one of the bedrooms, he suggested putting a bookcase underneath the duct so you hardly even notice the duct above it. He noticed that the backsplash in the kitchen would interfere with the electric plugs and changed it so that it looked better. He checked to make sure all of the moldings for the kitchen cabinets were exactly right so that we would not have to use odd size fillers. A man of integrity who has been a true partner in this massive undertaking to build our home to be structurally sound and very functional so that it will stand the test of time while being beautiful. Our uncle, who built RFK Stadium, recommended for us not to build because he said all builders were crooks that did shoddy work. When he looked at the photo history of our house he was really impressed with the quality and workmanship. Charlie is responsible for making our dream come true and he has made it a wonderful experience. We would highly recommend him to anyone.”
