“I had the pleasure of working with Narendra Patel on (what became) an award-winning development--Alta Palm Springs. My husband and I are developers and we purchased a problematic parcel of land in Palm Springs California. The land had an ideal location and incredible views of the San Jacinto mountains. We wanted to develop an architecturally significant neighborhood of 67 homes that was all contemporary in design, that featured modular floor plans that would give homeowners flexibility and create a custom look to the neighborhood, and where every home faced the views. We also wanted an architect who was using the latest and greatest 3D technology as an integral part of his process. After a long search for the right architect, I found Narendra Patel of Patel Architecture. To put it into context, Narendra typically does custom homes and large commercial work. We were asking an architectural genius to do the impossible--to work his magic in a way that would allow us to use production building techniques and sell the homes from $1.7 to $3.5 Million. The first thing that impressed me was that he fully embraced the challenge. The first significant result was that he did indeed find a way to orient all the homes so that they would face the view. The homes were angled to face the mountains, and he introduced an incredible courtyard home concept that brought the backyard to the front with complete privacy. The second significant contribution was his proprietary inverted truss system for the roofs which opened up view corridors from the main rooms of the homes by 40% or more. The third significant contribution was the cutting edge design of the homes. His unique style shows through in the facades of the homes as well as the interiors. The floor plans were designed with interchangeable modules allowing for additions of guest suites, bonus rooms, offices, and cabanas. With this project, we were one of the first developers to offer this concept. He made it work seamlessly. Narendra works in a manner that is ideal for developers. He works through his initial concepts in sketch form, but then transfers those ideas immediately into 3D. This is much more efficient because it allows the developer to quickly envision what is happening, ensure that plans will work on all lots, even problematic ones, and make quick revisions if needed. His animated fly-through renderings allowed us to market and sell the homes prior during grading. He is also highly collaborative which is essential to a developer. My husband and I had many ideas about what we wanted the finished homes to look like. He always considered our input with the utmost respect and worked those ideas into the plans. My husband and Narendra spent hours walking the site ensure the best outcome for the project. The result was Alta Palm Springs-- a community of homes that have become collector's homes.
