“We knew we wanted to work with Michael Klement and his team at Architectural Resource after hearing his philosophy on reimagining smaller homes, and green design. Our experience with them, and the outcome of our home redesign exceeded our expectations. Living in Ann Arbor, we set out to renovate our former rental home in Bellevue, Washington, before making it our retirement retreat. Michael gave us confidence that the project could be done successfully - remotely. Michael and his associate met us at our Bellevue home and spent two days surveying the space, and listening as we shared its pain points, our lifestyle needs, and our vision for entertaining family and friends. They led thoughtful discussions on key aspects of our remodel—sustainable design, healthy living environments, and aging in place—even climbing onto our roof to assess its potential for solar energy. Their meticulous approach helped uncover the home’s possibilities and maximize our use of space—all without expanding its footprint. A few weeks into the design process, COVID hit. The transition from our in-person Ann Arbor meetings to remote sessions was seamless, yet despite the shift, it always felt like we were right there with them. Each week, we witnessed their extraordinary skill as they presented thoughtful design solutions. For example, they replaced a wall separating the living area and kitchen with a freestanding tunnel gas fireplace, creating a visual division while maintaining an open, connected feel. Through their expertise in 3D modeling software, they helped us truly experience the space before it was built, making the design process both engaging and immersive. When it was time to move from final design to construction, Michael helped us identify potential contractors in the Seattle area and collaborated seamlessly as needed with our chosen contractor throughout the build. Seeing their design come to life in our remodeled home was pure joy. Their meticulous planning not only reimagined the space but also infused it with a refined aesthetic and innovative approach, completely transforming how we experience and enjoy living in it. “We were extremely happy with Meadowlark Design+Build. Our project involved turning an exterior porch into an interior living space. Everyone involved in the project -- from the management at Meadowlark, to the project managers assigned to our job, to the individual contractors -- was always professional, courteous and responsive. Nearly each stage of the project was done on time or ahead of time. When there were delays -- caused by supply chain issues or difficulties with scheduling subcontractors -- the project managers always communicated proactively and clearly about the cause of the delay and when we could expect progress. Meadowlark also did an excellent job mitigating the impact construction has on a household. They always cleaned up at the end of the day and were careful to work around our schedules when work would be noisy or otherwise disturbing. Meadowlark is more expensive than other contractors we got bids from but their emphasis on design, quality building and customer service makes it worth the extra money. We will definitely use Meadowlark for any future home renovation or construction.”

“We hired Jef and his team because we have had the fortune of being able to follow Jef's work in Ann Arbor for quite some time and we love his sense of flow and architectural detail. When it came time for us to buy a house in the Ann Arbor area we found that there were very few homes for sale and the thought of building popped up in our minds. When a good friend found the perfect lot for us by chance, we decided to go for it. Of course Jef was first on our list and we really did not look anywhere else as we had already admired his work from a far. Developing the plans for the house was a lot more dynamic and fun than at least I had first imagined. My husband was very excited about EVERY aspect of designing and building a house while I was a bit more tentative at first. I am now a convert and would absolutely build a house again. When we met with Jef for our very first design meeting we talked about our wishes and desires for the house etc and while we were talking he listened and free-handed a bubble diagram of the house to show the flow and the initial layout, as he saw it from our description, it was nothing short of fantastic! It was incredibly helpful for us to utilize this diagram as we kept thinking about how we wanted the house to function. Jef also did a great job of explaining the team's process and timeline for each stage, as well as what to expect from the entire experience from an emotional as well as strategic standpoint. He was 100% correct with his assessment of the emotions at the different stages of the process and he walked us through each step as it happened like a champion. Jef's team of carpenters made the vision come to life with architectural details like 20 ft ceilings and design details like walnut railing for the staircases and a giant walnut barn door that is just amazingly beautiful, just to mention a few of the items that took this house above and beyond our expectation. The crew is a great bunch of friendly and professional people and they keep a VERY clean jobsite and truly respect the property in its entirety. We also want to note that the post-construction follow up was fantastic. Any questions or thoughts we had were handled swiftly and with 100% satisfactory outcome and we want to give Monica Hough an A+ for her communication and follow through. We would, in a heartbeat, recommend Forward Design Build to anyone who is looking for a remodel or a design and build situation like ours. We absolutely LOVE our home. The only downside is that we never want to leave it; we make our friends come to us :-)!”
