My builder uses Houzz Pro to plan the timeline and give detailed estimates and daily updates with photos of progress, and provide invoices at pre-agreed key points in the build. This made the whole experience much more efficient and stress-free.

Evergreen Homes
Multigenerational Home Builders in Portland
Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsJuly 27, 2025
“Evergreen Homes (EH) NW Team is professional, family-oriented, creative with design, focused on quality workmanship, and so much more. The EH Team applied master-level skills to the smallest design details in our Boomer designed home for four sisters living together. We loved the architectural design that came from our concept meeting with Chris; e.g. four-car garage, fire pit, window seat in each suite, and more. We had a lot of fun picking our flooring, cabinets, stain colors, and again, much more. We incorporated our 1950 renovated claw foot dining table that was the pride of our large family coming together for meals as children. Now we, sisters, continue to enjoy meals together at the same table in our beautiful Evergreen Homes design. Evergreen Homes is very much worthy of an award for quality craftsmanship, functionality, accessibility for Boomers living together now and in the future.”
Neil Kelly Company
Multigenerational Home Builders in Portland
Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsOctober 28, 2024
“We originally contacted Neil Kelly for a design/update consultation of our kitchen and living room spaces. Before we could begin this process our home was significantly damaged in an ice storm. We quickly asked them pivot to repair and update multiple spaces in our home. They came to the rescue! Were there “hiccups” in our project, absolutely. However, they worked with us to solve the issues. We were treated with incredible kindness, patience and professionalism at a time when we were highly stressed. Thank you Neil Kelly!”

Custom Home Builder FAQs
The duration of a multigenerational home project varies based on the projectʼs scope, complexity, and size. Generally, designing and building a custom multigenerational home can take anywhere from 10 to 18 months from initial consultation to completion. Projects involving significant modifications to existing homes may have shorter timelines. Early engagement with a builder to establish a realistic timeline is crucial for planning purposes.
Material and design trend selection is a collaborative process that considers durability, maintenance, sustainability, and aesthetics suitable for all ages. Multigenerational Home Builders often recommend materials and designs that offer long-term value, are environmentally friendly, and can be easily adapted or updated. They stay informed on the latest trends and innovations in home design to suggest options that blend style with functionality, ensuring the home remains modern and accommodating for years to come.
Homeowners should start by defining their familyʼs needs, preferences, and budget. Researching local zoning laws and restrictions is essential to ensure the planned project is feasible. Gathering inspiration for design and functionality can help communicate your vision to the builder. Additionally, having an open dialogue about expectations and roles among family members will facilitate smoother decision-making during the building process.
Builders address challenges such as privacy concerns, differing design tastes, and budget constraints by engaging in thorough planning and communication from the outset. They employ creative design solutions to ensure private spaces for each family unit while optimizing communal areas. Transparent, regular communication helps manage expectations and mitigate conflicts. Builders also work closely with homeowners to navigate budget constraints, offering alternatives that align with the projectʼs goals without compromising quality.
Accessibility considerations include ensuring that the home can accommodate family members with mobility challenges. This includes incorporating features like wider doorways, no-step entries, bedroom and full bathroom on the main level, and potentially installing assistive devices like stairlifts or elevators. Multigenerational Home Builders can advise on universal design principles that make the home accessible and comfortable for all ages and abilities.
To keep a multigenerational home project on budget, clear and detailed communication with your builder about financial limits from the start is vital. Request a comprehensive, itemized quote to understand all potential costs. Regularly review expenditures and progress with the builder to ensure the project remains aligned with the budget.
