TURN KEY HOMES OF MAINEGeneral Contractors, Home Builders1 Verified HireCumberland County's Quality Custom Home Builder - Best of Houzz 2020!Typical Job Cost: $175,000 - 5 million
Turn Key Homes of Maine wants you to love your home! From executive ranches to basic colonials or comfortable capes, Turn Key Homes of Maine can help build your dream.
We hired Turnkey Homes to handle the groundwork, driveway, foundation, well, and capping off the foundation with plans to eventually live in the space. This also included the plumbing work and septic system installation. The basement was completely plumbed as well. From the start, their saleswoman, was very difficult to communicate with. We would send emails, and it would take a couple of weeks each time for her to get back to us. Initially, the company agreed to cap off the foundation with the understanding that I would put the temporary roof on, with the intention of removing it later to build a full house. But after they began the work, the owner raised concerns about us living in the foundation after it was capped off. This change of direction was unexpected and caused confusion and delays, as it wasn’t communicated upfront. To make matters worse, their electrician backed out. I spoke with the owner about it, and he assured me he would talk to the electrician and call me back — but he never did. That left us scrambling to find our own, which we did. As the work progressed, it became clear that their own employees were complaining frequently about the leadership and management on the job. This was unsettling and added to our frustration with the entire process. The groundwork itself was also suspect — come spring, a lot of it washed away on one side of the house. I called them to come take a look, and the owner showed up with the groundwork supervisor. They looked at the situation for about three minutes and offered solutions, but it was for me to fix it myself. Ultimately, I had to fix the groundwork. While the work was eventually completed, the lack of clarity, poor communication, and ongoing issues left us frustrated and disappointed. In addition to all of that, there was some other suspect work, such as missing hangers, missing nails, and things like that — more minor, but still concerning. It feels like you’re just a number with this company. Our goal was to build in phases to stay mortgage-free as part of our retirement plan. They build a lot of houses, both modular and stick-built, but based on our experience, I would not recommend this company.

We sustained water damage to the ceiling of our great room in our vacation home in NH. Outside In worked with our home owner insurance to take care of the damage quickly and professionally. The damage was much worse than anticipated but it did not stop Outside In from completing the project on time. They replaced part of the ceiling, a support beam, and two skylights. I was so pleased I hired them again to replace the heat system in our bathroom. You'd never know anything had ever happened to our great room. Thank you, Jesse!

Fenton Varney's quality of work, responsiveness, and flexibility were nothing short of outstanding. His company expanded and completely renovated my lake cottage while I was mostly absent. John Cole ArchitectArchitects, Home BuildersJohn Cole Architect specializes in the design of vacation and retirement homes, primarily in western Maine and the Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire. These custom homes all start with the owners' attachment to a place and the dream of a more relaxed life-style. My goal is to give form to the dream. My first home building experience came at the side of my father, a frugal Yankee carpenter. My training in design came later at Yale, Washington University and the School of Wood Sculpture in Quebec. In between was a brief hockey career in Europe. Early in my architectural career I designed homes for custom builders. As a partner in a large Boston area firm I continued to design homes for friends and word-of-mouth clients, as well as leading teams on award-winning commercial projects. Drawn back to my roots by the satisfaction of hands-on work, I have focused for the past 20 years on home design inspired by New England traditions of craft, thrift and whimsy. I offer complete design-build services in association with MWV Homes, the region's premier high performance builder. This collaboration provides the owner with information on pricing, technical details and supply chain issues early in the design process which can shorten the overall project schedule and avoid costly design changes. In addition, the owner has the advantage of a single point of responsibility for both the design and construction of their home..
We just built a seasonal family camp in Maine. Constructing a building long-distance is never an easy process for an owner, but having the right architect can turn a potential never-ending headache into a relatively pleasant problem solving experience. We had owned the site, including a few primitive old buildings for decades; it is part of an old kids' camp. We loved the lakefront location, but were ready for something more comfortable. John Cole was our architect and worked with us every step of the way to bring our vision of a practical, well built camp into reality, From the questions he asked and the practical answers he offered to our questions during the initial interview, it was clear that he was the western Maine architect we were looking for. John is a good listener, and his initial design proposal included nearly everything we had indicated. As the design process went on, we tapped John's knowledge of local building contractors as well as other ancillary professionals. As a result. when we had a question, or even more importantly when John thought we were overlooking the need for an outside consultant, he raised the issue and suggested a contact. As we worked our way through the construction process, the value of John's site visits and continuing involvement became clear. Construction questions were resolved quickly and we had time to resolve continuing questions as to interior finishes as the building went up around us. John is a patient man, taking the time needed to make the owner comfortable with the "right" choice. A perfect example is the selection of the color for the kitchen island and cabinets. John made his suggestion early in the process and then revisited the question at least three times. It took us several weeks to come to agreement, but John patiently waited for the time needed for his suggestion to take hold. We are glad that he did. Now that we are all done, we are happy with our comfortable camp. It's handsome and meets our needs. Best of all, the finished building looks as if it grew up out of the site.
