I tend to style for a look that's been collected over time. I'm most creative when combining the vintage with modern. I enjoy mixing eras, textures, sheens, elements and fabrics and pulling it all together with color. It's all about the right balance and contrast; achieving the room's rhythm so there's not one main focal point, but rather, being drawn in by the entire room.

Karen's personal design philosophy is: always create the unexpected. Karen entered the design arena when she was just 16 and working as an assistant to the interior designer at Tuscan Imports, a New York furniture and design company owned by her family. She quickly developed an understanding and appreciation of fine furnishings, accessories and the art of design. The importance of design in our daily lives is paramount in Karen’s everyday thinking. “I want to wake up each morning to an environment that fills me with energy," she observes. "Just as my own home reflects my personality and lifestyle, it is important to me that each design project I undertake resonates with a style and character truly definitive of the person living in the space. Each room in your home should bring you a feeling of happiness and wellbeing, so that you enjoy the habitat and truly love being there. Coming home should always be a pleasure.” Karen Alagna now lives in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., just minutes from Charleston, and maintains a residence in New York City, her home town. Her work has been extensively photographed and published.. Karen is practiced in connecting bold new concepts with classic lines. She creates a crisp, fresh interpretation of 21st-century residential luxury. Her designs are forward-looking and progressive—and at the same time inviting, functional, and distinctly attuned to living now. When you contact Karen Alagna for a consultation, she will meet with you to discuss your design project. This meeting gives you the opportunity to experience her work first-hand, and to convey your vision, your ideas, and your needs. Then comes a visit to your home, or to the project location. Multiple visits may be necessary to see the property in changing light at different times of day. This is another excellent opportunity for assessing the factors that will help shape a design to express your personality and meet your special preferences. The aim is to create a haven perfectly in sync with your way of life. When your design concept has been established, planning will begin. All of Karen's resources—exceptional fabric houses, wallpaper artistry in Manhattan, and outstanding furniture and lighting designers—will be put to task. A storyboard will be presented, defining colors, fabrics, wallpapers, furniture and accessories. Time for innovation, action, results.
