Barbara Sternau Interior Design

Our family has had the pleasure of working with Barbara on multiple projects over a period of eight years, most recently on a complete basement renovation of our Victorian-era home in Tarrytown, NY, which involved the careful removal and reuse of brick original to the 1896 structure, and barn wood which Barbara sourced. The project included a media room with custom cabinetry, a workout area, a gardening station with potting table and hammered copper farmhouse sink (which doubles as a bar for parties), a half bath, plus an alcove for my son's drum kit. Barbara is exceptionally good at solving quirky problems which come with vintage houses, and has a cadre of specialist painters, cabinet makers, contractors and other crafts people who seemingly drop everything to work with her clients. Perhaps most impressively, she always finds less expensive options. The finished product has a laid-back chic look. Her next project for us will be a remodel of our beach house on Block Island, RI. We can't wait!

I would highly recommend Barbara Sternau to others. I owned a large contemporary home in Westchester, NY. Barbara worked on the renovation of the kitchen, the design for a new full bathroom, and renovated our master bedroom. She helped with other smaller projects like new carpeting for two stairways, a new color for a large front door, new window treatments. All of these worked out very successfully. Recently we sold the house in a difficult market. It only took two weeks to have a deal. All the realtors raved about the décor which definitely helped sell the house. I then downsized to an apt. I would have liked to buy new furnishings but decided to use what I had. Barbara measured each room, decided what I should keep and created a stunning layout. It was a real feat. She selected new window treatment, carpeting, and decided where the art work would be hung. I'm really enjoying the space and decor. Barbara listens carefully to your wants and needs. She has always worked within my budget. She's very knowledgeable about new products and design ideas. She's particularly about the workmen and shops that do work for her. Barbara has loads of charm and a great sense of humor and has always been a pleasure to work with.

I have worked with Barbara now on two occasions. -- summer of 2014 to re-design and decorate my living room, office and master bedroom. This was a major project. Barbara was very professional throughout the whole project - we discussed design options, cost estimates, samples etc. Her towering strength is her creativity and ability to re-imagine space to meet client needs. Additionally, she was a good communicator throughout the whole project and process. There were no surprises. I am so happy in my new space....two years + later, I still feel the same way. I am proud to have people come into my house - I always get the "wow" reaction, too. I hired Barbara recently (August 2016) to completely redesign my Master Bathroom. Again - we discussed my goals and she came back with a very exciting, creative and practical design that was recently completed. I love it. The space feels so different and works perfectly. I love working with her. I highly recommend her and will hire her again when I start my next project.

Barbara is very attuned to the preferences of her clients while still adding her own flair and creativity to each project. As a wallpaper and painting contractor, I've had the pleasure of working with Barbara for some time now, and have had the pleasure of seeing her beautiful designs come to fruition to the delight of her clients. Barbara does it all -- and does it all effortlessly! She is outstanding, both as a person and a professional. From ordinary jobs like updating a sunroom, family room or master bedroom to completely gutting a master bathroom, she is wonderful to work with. Outstanding decorator, used now on 4 major projects. Flexible with different styles, and different spend levels. Knowledgeable about all aspects - fabrics, colors, furniture and placement, accessories, etc. Creative use of multiple sources such as classic decorator sources, retail products, use of antiques or pre owned items, etc. Designs lovely built ins when needed. Easily works with others such as architects or contractors. I highly recommend her for projects from small to very large.

I hired Barbara to help design my kitchen. Her eye for materials and color was outstanding. The project was handled in a professional and timely manner and I would highly recommend her for any type of home interior design project.
