I hired Coates Design to help me design and build an elevator in my home. I was asked for a retainer, which I paid, and which was quickly spent by Coates Design. However, never once was I asked the kind of questions I might expect to be asked to design an elevator in my home. In addition, my job was assigned to someone whom I had not interviewed and seemed to have no knowledge of what I wanted or needed in my home. When I complained, I was told the money had been spent. As of now, I am out the large retainer fee, plus an additional invoice that I paid, and I have no work to show for it. We have parted ways, but I would be very careful when interviewing Coates Design Architecture to find out more than I did about their processes, communication, and spend structure. It was an incredibly disappointing experience and I cannot warn future clients away from this firm more strongly.

Clark Construction Inc.

Coates Design has been our partner on several projects, including a significant renovation of a medical facility into a police department and municipal court. Recycled construction materials from this project were then used in the design and construction of a tiny home community for farming interns. The reHome project diverted 2,6000 pounds of construction waste from the landfill and won the AIA 2022 Honor Award of Merit in research and innovation. Coates Design demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable building practices, which is a guiding principle at Clark Construction. They integrate environmentally responsible strategies into the projects we've partnered on, considering factors such as energy efficiency, natural resource conservation, and the well-being of occupants. We appreciated how Coates worked alongside us throughout all phases of construction, valuing our expertise and engaging in thoughtful discussion when decisions needed to be made.

They are very collaborative and are open and receptive to bringing in the General Contractor to help provide the most cost effective solution while keeping the clients design needs at the forefront. Matthew and his team are thorough, professional, creative and responsive. Building one of their projects becomes a cost effective endeavor for both the builder and the client. It's not enough to capture someone's idea on paper. It needs to relate to the client's budget and schedule as well. It also needs to be thorough and clear enough for the builder to take it from design to reality. Coates Design does a great job balancing the entire creative process.
