As a little girl, going to visit Grandma at her old farmhouse was like opening up a treasure chest for me. I loved her stories, and in the big dining room, there was a built-in glass china cabinet that you could see-through into the kitchen. I was only four years old and I remember looking inside to see the most beautiful blue & white china & I’d ever seen. These were the everyday plates they ate on everyday and the bowls they served the mashed potatoes in. And as I peered through the glass, looking at every piece, I saw it-the most beautiful little pitcher with a picture of Shirley Temple on it! So beautiful dark blue-I’d seen my treasure. I kept thinking about my little pitcher, and yet I was only four years old. Every time I visited Grandma I secretly checked out “my little pitcher”. Then, one day when I was helping Grandma with the dishes, I asked her about “my little pitcher” and she told me that it came with a box of Wheaties and when my dad was young & she used it to pour milk on his cereal. By then, I was about 5 or 6 years old, and she reached up on the shelf to get it and gave it to me. I’ve cherished it every day since.
