My husband and I recently worked with Joanna on a complete renovation of a 2100 square foot apartment involving everything from moving walls, selecting new floors, ceilings, lighting, bathrooms and a kitchen. Joanna was able to simplify the complexity of this project by organizing the cooperation of contractors and numerous suppliers to ensure that details were taken care of and potential problems avoided. We were particularly impressed by her concern that that things were designed to be comfortable, user friendly and at the same time aesthetically pleasing. I hired Joanna to help me turn my dated, dark mid-2000s colonial with the typical Tuscan decor popular at the time into a bright and modern, yet warm and comfortable family home. It was a large project, since I was effectively starting over in virtually every room of a 6000 sq ft house, including a major kitchen reno. I was wary of working with an interior designer again, since all my previous experiences were disasters. On past projects, I'd found myself steered time and again to expensive custom made furniture, window treatments and decor that I ended up hating, but obviously couldn't return. I also would be presented with a bunch of choices, and when I'd ask them what they thought, they'd say I was the one who needed to decide - always leaving me wondering, "If I could do that, why did I hire you?" Joanna was different from day one. She immediately got my taste and style, worked quickly and thoroughly to narrow down real choices, and gave me firm opinions when I asked for them. The best part was, she understood my budget and desire to get things done quickly, and worked with me my way to choose from pieces that already existed no matter where they came from, even if my preference was to order from Wayfair (something I've found most decorators loathe to do). From lighting to furniture to countertops and paint colors, she was with me every step of the way, helping me make the right choices and showing me options I never would've thought of. She has amazing taste and a great eye for detail. She also went above and beyond, helping me to get things done and working with my contractor while I was overseas for two months, so that when we arrived back home everything looked beautiful and was ready for us to enjoy. After nine years in this house, I can finally look around and love everything about it, and have received many compliments from family and friends. Joanna Cohlan (Fresh Eyes For Your Home) is by far the best designer I have ever worked with. I started using her services more than 20 years ago. She helped me with my kitchen and then she designed my entire office - over 1500 square feet. She bought all the furniture, supervised the contractors, selected the colors, etc. A couple of years ago she designed all 3 bathrooms in my residence when we gut renovated them. My personal master bath is so beautiful that it is the first room I show people when they visit my house. Joanna also designed the nursery for my grandson and my daughter’s room last year. I worked with Joanna Cohlan when my husband and I recently purchased a condo. Moving from a smaller space, but with a lot of treasures, I needed advice and “fresh eyes” to begin the transformation. From the beginning, Joanna was very hands-on. She came to see the space before we closed and came up with a floor plan and ideas for furniture placement and how i could still keep sentimental pieces while purchasing new. We have been working with Joanna for over a year on a major renovation of our new house (e.g., layout, the kitchen, master bathroom/ closet, powder room usefulness, living room continuity, floors, lights). She was involved from the initial design to picking out furniture. Joanna has been THE SINGLE BEST PERSON that we have hired through this process. She has been a pleasure to work with, very available, and instrumental in helping us get to a beautiful AND functional solution. I am also convinced that we are getting exceptional value. She has been exceptional in the areas of: Collaboration: I appreciated the way Joanna listened, understood our preferences, and recommended options to help us narrow down an (at times) overwhelming array of choices. Joanna helps weave a great design between both my wife and my (often differing) preferences. Insight: Joanna came up with creative options for our home design, such as: adding a new powder room, inserting French doors to our pool area and opening up our kitchen, and creating a more open and flowing space between kitchen, eating area and living room. Customization of design to our needs and style: Joanna did not press her style on us. She listens to what we like and elevating our preferences to fine design. For example, my wife wanted a very ‘clean friendly’ house, whereas I wanted a contemporary, beautiful white kitchen – we settled on a light bluey-grey STAINED lower cabinet that hides dust and grime and is kid- and chip-proof, a white counter, and white uppers. A perfect compromise. Joanna also customizes the cost to our needs. She looks for places to save money where we can save and nudges us to splurge where she thinks it matters (e.g., a gorgeous custom rug). This is EXTREMELY valuable. Attention to detail: Joanna is precise and cares about the little things that make a difference. Guidance through the process: Joanna was fantastic at helping us navigate the entire process and set priorities. When to look for contractors, when to seek out the kitchen designer, etc. She saved us many missteps and helped the project go that much faster. When her advice contradicted the architect, she was 100% right. Contacts: Joanna’s contacts have all been top notch – you can trust that when she introduces you to someone, they are GREAT. Mindful of costs: Joanna is constantly looking to work within our budget, find perfect options that also save us money, passing on her discounts to us, and at times encouraging us to “lean in” on a bigger buy that really makes a difference. She seems to treat our budget as if it is her own money and looks to maximize its impact on our house. Available: She is available and easy to engage over email (nice if you are a professional) or in person. All in all, I cannot recommend Joanna more highly.

After buying a house in need of a gut reno, we were lucky enough to meet Joanna Cohlan through a referral. The first thing (of many) that we liked about Joanna was her design philosophy: she was adamant that she help to enhance/elevate our taste, not have us adhere to hers, and she wanted to-gasp-help us SAVE money by prioritizing and shopping at high end stores that offered her great discounts. Further, she charged by the hour, which we appreciated since other designers we interviewed took a percentage of what we spent (this concerned us for obvious reasons). In addition, every single one of her meticulously vetted vendors-from her kitchen contact to her tile rep to her furniture saleswoman was amazing. My husband and I didn’t realize how important this was until we compared our experiences with the people we found on our own to the ones Joanna found. It was night and day. I am a person who is pretty decisive and knows what I like but Joanna really illuminated things I hadn’t considered and came up with ideas (switch the powder room location with a closet, add a sliding barn door and poof-a cool mudroom; replace boring wooden caps on railings with $1 metal ones and-wow- a funky staircase!) my husband and I never would have thought of. Moreover, Joanna is fun to be around, accessible (she responds to texts almost immediately), and flexible. We are done and love our home but we will miss Joanna!

My small, modest (no doorman and low rise) Manhattan cooperative hired Joanna to refresh and revitalize our drab lobby. This was money well spent. She did not disappoint. Always mindful of our budget, she brought us clear design options to vote on, while always keeping her design vision in mind. She would then execute with our contractor and managing agent. She selected stunning wallpaper, sparkling fixtures, new handrails, paint colors, borders, new exterior doors and mailboxes. She also coordinated with technical services associated with the installation of these items. Joanna not only has an eye for style, she is an absolutely lovely person. I highly recommend her.

Six years after moving into my home (completely decorated by Joanna) , it was time to redo the upstairs bathroom (rigor my daughters). The aesthetic had to be neutral (per my younger daughter) while still being funky (per me). We ended up with a completely redesigned bathroom to maximize space. The shower is large and welcoming. Joanna even helped find a double sink vanity with enough counter space for multiple hair dryers and curling irons plus built in plugs and a USB charger. We built a custom linen closet behind the door to hold all the toiletries and linens. I’m so jealous — I need Uk do the master bath next. Joanna has a great eye, listens to your input and incorporates everything into the design plan. Highly recommend.

I met Joanna through a mutual friend. My living room was monochromatic (browns and blacks) and needed color. My furniture was also too large for the space. Joanna came to my apartment and walked around and then we started talking. I told her that I knew I need new sofas, a new chair and a coffee table. I also told that there were certain pieces that had to be incorporated into the new design. Then we met a at a design store that had everything I needed. She had called ahead to have some rugs brought in for me in the color and size I was interested in. Once the rug was chosen she guided me through selecting a sofa, loveseat and chair. When the rug and furniture were delivered she was there to make sure it was okay and placed correctly. Joanna even helped my with placement of some of my artwork. I did have an issue with the sofa--my fault, not hers or the store's--but she was very helpful in getting it resolved and I was grateful for that. Joanna took me out of my comfort zone--painlessly!-- and I am very happy with the room. I would highly recommend Joanna.

I first contacted Joanna Cohlan of Fresh Eyes For Your Home for design, decorating, and project management services approximately one year ago. At that time, the main bathroom of my Dobbs Ferry home was completely demolished, due to a serious plumbing issue. I had neither the time nor inclination to find and deal with contractors or vendors; select all new fixtures; comparison shop for pricing; agonize over paint colors. In addition, my previous decorating choices were disastrous. Nothing ever turned out the way I visualized it, and again and again, I had to "live with" costly and ugly mistakes. Through Angie's List, I found Joanna, who was able to come to my rescue. My husband and I were so pleased with every aspect of our bathroom, and the relative ease of the project, that we hired Joanna to completely renovate, design, and decorate a two bedroom apartment we purchased in Manhattan this January. This decision was the best we could possibly have made aesthetically, economically, and emotionally. I cannot say enough about Joanna and her work. My one concern about this review is that it is so consistently and overwhelmingly positive in every respect that I worry people won't take it seriously. From the first phone call, and continuing without exception to the present, Joanna has been responsive, attentive, communicative, flexible, prompt and "on the ball" in every sense, all the time. Her professionalism has been exemplary. She is perceptive and a quick study, and is always respectful of my budget, looking for ways to most efficiently use her time. She's a smart and creative problem solver, and her sense of space and its use is uncanny. Her design and decorating ideas are brilliant. The sales and management personnel at my new coop, and the contractor on the job have asked for her card on numerous occasions. The apartment is beyond beautiful: sleek, clean, modern, yet warm and inviting! Lots of unique touches, and a bit of whimsy. A huge bonus: she is funny, personable, unpretentious, easy to talk to. (My writing of this recommendation was just interrupted by a phone call from my apartment's management department. Once a year, the bank holding the underlying mortgage of the coop visits. Management would like to show them my apartment, since "we like to show them the nicest apartment in the building"). With both the apartment and bathroom projects, Joanna demonstrated a knack for quickly and accurately assessing the situation, and her clients's needs, and desires. Her catch phrase is an enthusiastic and confident "Got it!" And she really DOES get it! By asking all the right questions, listening closely, and getting to know me she perceptively and accurately assessed my overall style, priorities, preferences, and taste. Leading the way with her own talent, creativity, expertise, taste and vision, she was able to translate some vague notion in my head into a beautiful, cohesive integrated reality. Any number of times, in some mysterious way, she was able to hone in on items that I really loved, that I never in a million years would have considered without her guidance. If needed, she is able to supply outstanding contractors with whom she works, at discounted prices. She works extremely well with these, and with independent contractors, gaining their respect and trust, and thus, their cooperation. However, when necessary, she can be direct, honest, demanding and tough. Joanna's very reasonable fees were made even more reasonable when one factors in elements like efficient use of her time; contractor and decorator discounts; and avoidance of costly mistakes. She advised me as to what aspects and items were worth investing in, and which were worth skimping on, which resulted in considerable savings. In summary, Joanna is more than able to take on both major and minor construction, design and decorating projects which are fraught with frustration, aggravation, confusion and expense,and turn them into "no problems". She made the decorating aspects of these projects, which are usually disappointing and frustration to me, into gratifying and enjoyable experiences. The result: a very stylish, elegant, high-end looking apartment with creative and clever use of space and built-ins, and all within a serious budget, without grief, doubt and aggravation. I first met Joanna Cohlan a full year before we purchased our new 2 bedroom apartment for a one hour consultation for advice on which pieces to bring with us and how best to place them in our temporary rental. Using only a set of floor plans she did a great job in placing the pieces we moved. We were so impressed with her talent, charm and personality that we didn't hesitate at all when the time come for furnishing our new place. We wanted to start from scratch, with all new furniture and I was very intimidated by the process. I had a vague idea of the look I was going for, and Joanna helped me translate my general ideas into the language of design. She introduced me to some wonderful vendors who were as equally a pleasure to work with and together we chose fabrics, floor coverings, window treatments, colors, lighting, etc. Some work was custom, some pieces came from showrooms, and Joanna was equally competent and comfortable in any medium. Her contacts in the industry are extensive and anyone she recommended delivered on time and within budget. I ended up with an apartment that is beautiful, comfortable and a total reflection of our taste and style.

What can I say about Joanna?! Well, there aren't enough good things!! She has been so amazing in helping my husband & I bring out the true authenticity of our English Tudor style home. She knows exactly what I'm looking for & is so patient when I'm not sure if I really "love" something. She is fun, full of life / energy & is an overall pleasure to work with!! Most of all, she truly cares about her clients & stands by all her work. I loved the option to purchase an hour so that I could see if going any further with her would make sense. I was somewhat skeptical that she could achieve much in a single hour but I felt I'd get a clue to her style and see if our chemistry worked. From this first hour, I was able to see that Joanna knew her trade and knew it well. She immediately took a tour of my home and made recommendations to relocate some of the items of furniture that I had cluttering up my living room. She moved them to my kitchen where they made all the difference in the world. I was so impressed that I then decided to hire her for an additional 9 hours to pick her brain on a number of rooms in my home. Several years ago, Joanna helped me successfully stage my home and so when I moved to a new town home I again sought out her discerning eyes. She came for her consultation and immediately began making color suggestions for each room, and her thoughts about the placement of my furniture. Every time she comes to my home I see her looking around to refine and complete the entire room. When she tells me to move a piece of furniture, even if it is only 6 inches to the left or right, she is always correct!
