Jonathan Berger Interior Design

Jonathan worked with us to design the interior remodel of our new home in Santa Cruz, CA. He has an impeccable eye and incredible understanding of value and was able to advise us on everything from floorplan re-design to building materials selection to lighting design to color palette to individual furniture pieces. Since this was during most of quarantine, it was entirely virtual and Jonathan never once saw the house in person-- and it turned out BEAUTIFULLY. I cannot recommend working with Jonathan highly enough for any size project!!

Jonathan Berger is as good as it gets. I have worked with Jonathan on several projects, including my home and multiple offices. His superpower is creating easy and beautiful spaces. Guests to our home ask for his name, and work colleagues (and clients) want to move in. On my own, I have made any number of costly decorating mistakes. Design errors don't happen with Jonathan. The first thing he does when he consults with you is to download you so that he understands what you want; he takes measurements and then sketches out your room. If you wish, he will work with what you already have, and then refine it. He is a smart, creative and intuitive designer; anyone who works with him will have a place as distinctive as their fingerprint. Jonathan is indefatigable. He can find that eclectic piece that makes a room, and if he can't find it, he can make it or find someone to make it. Because of his training, he understands value; he finds furniture and antiques in the usual places, but also in arcane auctions, in random shops or on his travels. His friends are artists and artisans. His sources adore him because of his knowledge and kindness, but also know he expects quality work. Not least, he sticks to budget. Often well within budget. And if there is a piece that he thinks you might be interested in that wasn't in the plans, he will show you and let you decide. It is always your decision. Jonathan is awesome. I would be happy to speak with you or answer any questions. Houzz (and Jonathan) have my email.

I will not make a design move without consulting Jonathan. He has the best eye of anyone I have known--and I'm an art historian and museum curator. He has designed and decorated my New York City apartment, my Florida condo and my home in Williamstown MA. Every decision he's made is so innovative and so "right." He also acted as architect for my son and daughter-in-law's home, coming up with the most innovative and clever solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems. They love everything he's done. He knows an infinite amount consumer products and manufacturers from Ikea to Holly Hunt and is wonderfully egalitarian about choices. He also knows where to source items. Finally Jonathan is a complete pleasure to work with and listens carefully to one's own preferences rather than forcing his own. I have to honestly say I'm surprised he is not one of the "famous" designers that are shown over and over as I believe he is infinitely more talented, has better taste and is much more knowledgeable than they are. He knows about the design, art, and innovators of all periods through history. In addition to being a scholar and gentleman he is the kindest person. The BEST!

In 2015 I began working with Jonathan at the suggestion of friends who had him redecorate a 3 bedroom apartment on the upper east side. My husband was ill so we did the second bedroom and made it into a den with a full redesign of the space to accommodate our changing needs. He had a day bed made with great fabric and pillows. Jonathan understood with kindness and compassion that my project would be done in stages. After my husband died, we redecorated the bedroom. He found things at auction houses with so much promise that the item either fully reupholstered or my antique rug which after deep cleaning looked brand new. My entire apartment was redesigned and redecorated. Jonathan was wonderful. The fabrics we picked were perfect. He also helped me gut a bathroom in my country house and redecorate the primary bedroom there. That was most recent project, during winter of 2019. He is kind, fun and good to work with. I have recommended him to many friends.

Jonathan is a dream to work with! He has the rare ability to listen to his clients and then transform many of our random thoughts and ideas into spaces that go beyond expectations. It is great to collaborate with a designer who is so easy to be with and so knowledgable about all facets of design.

Jonathan is an extremely talented design professional. He sees a room , an object, a color in ways that bring out the best in each of these. He is a treasure and a delight to work with. Never a disappointment, always a surprise. Jonathan designed my kitchen, bathroom , living room and more!

It has been a pleasure and an honor to work with Jonathan Berger. His method of working throughout the entire pandemic didn’t slow him down a bit. Jonathan’s professionalism, demeanor and exceptional taste in home decor helped transform a very traditional home decorated some 13 years ago into a bright, open and modern space that is very functional, yet still incredibly comfortable. I am very grateful for his time and expertise.

Outstanding! Jonathan is unique in the world of design. He is able to listen and understand what you need and want to give you the look you desire. He doesn't design for himself--he designs for YOU! He can work with any budget, large or small, to provide you with the best outcome for you. His ability to hear you and transform your words into reality are extraordinary. I highly recommend him to anyone who seeks high quality, inspirational guidance and beautiful work. He is truly the best I have ever worked with.

Jonathan Berger and I have worked on many projects together over the past 15 years, and each has been a joy--and yielded spaces that deliver joy year after year. These projects range from a posh urban home to a small rural cabin to a boutique hotel in the tropics. In each case, Jonathan has delivered marvelous living spaces that function well and are authentic to the specific place and project. And he has also developed creative solutions that make the most of whatever budget we have, whether it's modest or lavish. Over the course of these projects, Jonathan has helped me build an extraordinary and meaningful collection of beautiful art, objects and furniture that have become important to my children, as well as to me. Jonathan's work is so good that friends assume he must be beyond their budgets. However, Jonathan's contribution more than offsets his fees: He knows where it's worth splurging and where an inexpensive solution will work just as well--and avoids costly mistakes, which I used to make on my own. If you're decorating a new home or even building one from scratch, I highly recommend you work with Jonathan Berger.
