About Us

McGrath II is an interior design firm combining the creative visions of Suzanne and Lauren McGrath. Their approach to residential design combines influences that are both traditional and modern; designing rooms that are thoughtfully curated and balanced. Spaces designed by McGrath II have an irresistibly fresh and inspired look, with an emphasis on using the very best materials to ensure comfort and longevity. They work with clients to select an inventory of key pieces that are so flexible, they can be moved from room to room and home to home for a lifetime. For this dynamic duo, decorating is not about the quick fix, and it’s the opposite of chasing the latest trends. It’s about making great choices that allow for the most versatility and reflect good taste. Both Suzanne and Lauren are committed to helping their clients choose furniture pieces and artwork for their homes that they love today, and that they know they’ll still feel the same way about ten or fifteen years from now. The firm is enlisted in a variety of services from full-scale decoration of homes to gut renovations. They work with contractors and architects to ensure the highest quality results. As a small team of four, they are able to give clients the one-on-one attention necessary to create a unique, thoughtful, and personalized experience. After graduating from Barnard College, Suzanne studied interior design and decorative art history at Parsons The New School for Design. She launched her career working for acclaimed design firms Cullman & Kravis and Thierry Despont, later transitioning as as style editor and producer of content for Martha Stewart Living. Lauren graduated from Bowdoin College, majoring in Art History. As Suzanne’s daughter, she enjoyed the benefit of experiencing many historic renovations in their Brooklyn neighborhood at a young age. Lauren worked for Teen Vogue magazine as a fashion news writer before joining forces with Suzanne in 2010 to co-found McGrath II. McGrath II’s work appears in Domino, House Beautiful, Traditional Home, Lonny, Better Homes & Gardens, Country Living, Redbook and Good Housekeeping. Good Bones, Great Pieces: The Seven Essential Pieces To Carry You Through a Lifetime (Abrams, May 2012) is their first book.

My husband and I hired McGrath II early in the process of gut renovating our 3-bed 3-bath NYC apartment. Suzanne, Lauren, and their excellent team were essential to designing everything from the location of walls and built-in millwork to the smallest details of the lampshades and bedding. Planned around the lovely custom upholstered pieces they suggested, the resulting apartment is the perfect expression of our taste, elevated by the McGraths professional eye. We had a lot of opinions, but not enough words to articulate them, and the McGraths did a wonderful and diplomatic job of interpreting our wishes while steering us towards a stunning, integrated look for the finished whole. We would highly recommend McGrath II for their creativity and discerning taste as well their willingness to be involved in every detail of the process. The McGraths are true professionals, and wonderful people to boot.

At meetings, they are succinct and decisive with all details. If ever I need answers to questions for any specific project, McGrath II answers quickly and clearly. Lauren and Suzanne McGrath were hired to decorate most of the major rooms in our house which included giving our kitchen a facelift, replacing hardware and then layering in gorgeous furniture pieces, wall decor and accessories. As a rather indecisive creative person when it comes to my own home, giving the girls room to be themselves and really translate my needs into something that also felt like their own signature style, could not have been an easy task. But, Lauren and Suzanne tackled our project with grace and energy and the end result was nothing short of, well...home. Which is exactly what we wanted.

Suzanne and Lauren are masters at understanding how to balance traditional and modern so that the end result looks fresh but still personal. I was so pleased at how our first project (living room and dining area) turned out that two years later, I hired them again to help with two bedrooms. They were respectful of my vision and elevated the ideas beyond what I could have accomplished on my own. They worked with some of my existing furniture and then really enhanced the rooms with suggestions of their own. Elegant and comfortable, tasteful and personal, timeless and interesting. When friends come to visit they all say how the apartment is exactly like me - and that is a huge compliment to Suzanne and Lauren because they knew how to achieve that better than I did!

The McGraths were an absolute joy to work with, from the beginning to the end of our project. We chose them to undertake the interior design of our home after having seen their work on Houzz and in their book. We knew already that their aesthetic of comfortable elegance fit with our vision, but I was truly impressed at how they aligned their vision for our house with our own. They were extremely respectful of our needs and hesitations while pushing us towards fresh, exciting, but always graceful pieces and fabrics, and they followed through with us even after the installation of the major new furnishings to ensure that the finishing touches--from lamp shades to mantle-piece nicknacks to the placement of art--were just as they should be. Our home feels entirely ours--but it is MUCH more beautiful than we would have been able to make it ourselves.

I loved working with Suzanne and Lauren. I hired them for a discrete job: help me redesign my living room but utilizing some of my existing furniture (couch and rug). That's not an easy task, but they transformed the room despite the constraints I set forth. They had an eye for what to do to freshen the room. One of the best suggestions was to repaint with a decorative painter and apply a high lacquer finish to the ceilings. Amazing! But they picked unique pieces (tables, chairs, lamps) that are all special and really made the room. A great sense of style and design, resourceful, responsive, patient...a pleasure!

McGrath II were the vision behind two projects: my office decor as well as my recent home renovation. They have impeccable taste—at every budget—and are creative in their sourcing and sensibility. I'd recommend them wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a modern/cool but timeless sensibility.
