I am a luxury custom home builder and Janice and have work together on a number of projects all of which have been extremely successful but most importantly when it came time to select an interior designer for a home I was having designed for my self and my wife Janice was the person we chose to work with to design the interiors of our dream home. Janice has a sense of style and especially a understanding and sense of color that is truly very special and wonderful! Her creativeness and her ability to understand what we wanted was fantastic. The final design was everything we hoped and more!

It was an absolute pleasure working with you. You are very easy to work with and gave me exactly what I was looking for. You have so much design experience that showed in your work. I would gladly hire Janice Stone for more projects. She was an exceptional interior designer and any person would be lucky enough to work with her.

Steer clear. I won't comment on the merits of the design. That's subjective, but I can say objectively that the contract was not honored. It promised monthly accounting and advance warning if the budget was going to be exceeded. Neither happened. Instead, I got an an invoice for more than double the original estimate of the cost. No warning.
The designer seemed to think that somehow I didn't understand the "process" though I grew up in the design industry with my parents and people of much greater stature than her.
I wanted to attribute the dispute to a basic miscommunication, but that is not what happened. For example, she charges a fee on top of all purchases she arranges. Good. Industry standard. No problem. But then I (you) discover she received a large discount on the purchase (which I found on the price tag under a chair - a $5,000 chair) that she ignored and charged her fee on top of. So you pay twice. Then she claims complete ignorance of the process, or doesn't actually respond to questions for clarity.
She also charges for "project management." Good luck to you on that. More often than not I dealt with the subcontractors directly. A few times she "informed" me of things that had been decided without her. Some of my sub-contractors mentioned that she told them only to talk to her.
Oh, and I should mention that my project was supposed to be 4-6 weeks. It tools four months.
It took an attorney (hers) to mediate the issue.
I know she will respond and try to make it look like somehow I don't understand the design process. No matter. You have been warned.

Comment from StoneWood Design, Inc.:
In response to Mr. A’s comments, Stone-Wood Design appreciates his strong endorsement of our creative and design skills. That creativity is a large part of what you hire when you engage us to assist in your project. As regards Mr. A’s criticism of our business practices, this job was unfortunately one where the client expected design services beyond the contractual scope but wasn’t that eager to pay for them. We take pride in maintaining excellent relations with our customers, whom we feel privileged to serve. We are serious about giving customers the full measure of what we agreed to provide and that they are paying for and in respecting all contractual obligations. Sometimes, your best efforts are not good enough, as was the case with Mr. A’s. Upon request, we will proudly provide names of satisfied customers willing to discuss their Stone-Wood experience with you.

I have used StoneWood Design to provide the interior design and kitchen/bath design twice for my primary residence. (They also did a remodel design for my second home.) The most recent of these is the remodel of the primary residence for which the figures are listed below. Janice and Alia have always been gifted professionals -- creative thinkers and problem solvers -- and have proven a delight to work with. They figured out the logistics of giving me exactly what I wanted -- both from a design standpoint and a functional standpoint. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed working with them and how pleased I am with the results!

Janice Stone Thomas is a consummate professional at the helm of StoneWood Design, Inc. Her passion for excellence in design has achieved national recognition. After purchasing a home in East Sacramento, we were fortunate to find Janice. She and her team upgraded the interior of our home. She knew instinctively what we wanted--even though I could not articulate the direction. We worked to edit, freshen, repurpose and restyle as well as add new pieces. The project included lighting, cabinetry and an exterior uplift. She achieved a level of style and sophistication that made me very proud of my home. Along the way, I received an education about what constitutes fine and enduring design. Plus, the collaboration was fun!
