Design Set Match

An excellent experience from start to finish. Alisa is an accomplished and experienced designer and an excellent communicator. She walked us through the process, listened to what we wanted, developed the design, took us shopping for fittings, answered all our questions promptly, and communicated well with our contractors. She clearly was respected by the vendors we visited, and our contractors were all impressed by her professionalism and attention to detail. We are thrilled with the result.

We've worked with Alisa on two projects, a complete kitchen remodel and the addition of a primary suit bathroom, both turned out beautifully. Our home is an old world Mediterranean style and Alisa truly helped us maintain the character and charm of the 1930's home, but with modern amenities. Shopping trips, drawings/schematics, and check-ins were all beneficial to the projects completion.

Alisa has a preternatural ability to both see your need as a home owner and to get it achieved with a minimum of stress. Our only regret about working with Alisa is not doing it sooner. She has made nearly every room in our house better.

I worked with the wonderfully creative Alisa Hofmann of Design Set Match on schematic designs for my kitchen and bathroom. Alisa quickly understood my needs and developed two alternative designs for each room - all terrific and on point. She has fantastic technical skills, a wealth of knowledge about products and materials, and referrals to great contractors. Equally important, she is a joy to work with. I highly recommend her!

We worked with Alisa for over a year on our primary suite project and plan to work with her again when we remodel our kitchen. Alisa completely transformed our odd primary bathroom into the bathroom of our dreams. Her detailed renderings helped us visualize a new home office with a coffee bar that we enjoy using almost every day! It's truly incredible how closely our completed projects resemble the renderings she did for us at the start of our project. Don't be scared off by her fees. Trust me when I say it's worth hiring her for the entire project, i.e., design, shopping assistance, and project management. You want her there when the counter fabricator comes to measure and install your counters and asks about edge treatments, seams/cuts, faucet holes, sink placement and the endless other questions they'll have for you on measurement day. Ditto for the shower glass fabricator, cabinet maker, and every other vendor who comes to your home. You want her to lay out your tile with her keen design eye before it's installed on your floor. You want her to tell your cabinet installer where to drill the holes for your pulls. While I know it's tempting to minimize Alisa's fees (I struggled with the same cost/benefit analysis myself), you want and need someone like Alisa to serve as your Subject Matter Expert. To be perfectly honest, we had our moments when we had our doubts... but once our project was in full swing we were SO glad we hired Alisa to serve as our advocate! As a consultant I have extremely high expectations of both myself and others. I'm a perfectionist with an uber type A personality, I'm super analytical, I research everything to the nth degree, and I have severe OCD tendencies. My husband affectionately refers to me as "Monk" (like the character from the TV show). That said Alisa met, and often exceeded, my expectations!

The following are descriptions of two projects done with Irma of Design Set Match. One project, completed November 2019 - Working with Irma on the tile design for my sunroom floor was a pleasure. The process was a very pleasant back-and-forth effort during which Irma listened very closely to what I wanted and then she came up with a great design. We tweaked it a few times till it worked in my space and the final design was creative and lovely, going beyond even what I had imagined it could be. On a separate project completed September 2021, Irma also helped me with an upgrade to my kitchen. She ran interference with the countertop contractor and helped me choose countertop material and kitchen fixtures. Irma gave me advice and recommendations but the final decisions were always mine. Unlike other designers, she never tried to make decisions for me or to get me to select anything that wasn't going to work for me. She also recommended a cabinetry contractor who built me a very versatile, custom broom closet that has room for expansion if my needs change.

When it comes to kitchen remodels there are so many options and scanning pictures on Houzz only gets you so far. We’ve done a lot of work on our old house but this is the first project we took on with help of a professional designer and we got the best in the biz! Alisa helped turn our dream kitchen into reality (and saved the marriage to boot). The kitchen is the one room in our house that there’s not a single thing I’d do differently - from big decisions to tiny details we’d never have thought of, we are so glad we had wise counsel to bring it all together.

The team from Design Set Match was extremely helpful and supportive throughout the process of our remodel. In particular, our project Manager, Irma Harris-Horne was very knowledgeable and helpful. Irma was a real pleasure with which to work. From the initial consultation, through the many steps - concept design, final design, materials selection, and project execution - Irma was on top of every detail. The design she prepared transformed our small condominium by reconfiguring the kitchen, upgrading the bathrooms and various other small enhancements throughout our unit. Her working drawings were so precise that they were given counter approval by the building department! She also recommended a fantastic contractor, James Enterprises, Inc. They were by far the best contractor with whom we have worked.

We hired Alisa as our designer for our kitchen and bathroom remodel. She worked with us from the fall of 2017 through summer 2018. We went shopping with Alisa to numerous suppliers and she usually knew as much or more than the sales people. She helped us winnow down the choices at the different stores. She bounded the range of options that would work, and then provided us flexibility and input for our final selections. She meticulously uploaded details on all our selections to a website so we could review and refer to them. Alisa and our contractor worked well together. She incorporated input from our contractor into the kitchen / bath design. We were very happy with Alisa’s design. It was well thought out, and she did a good job of assessing our space and melding her design with our space and our wishes. She prepared very detailed plans and materials specification lists. During the construction phase, she was accessible to the contractor if questions came up. Our project expanded to include a full house remodel. Alisa continued to make herself available to the contractor to provide input on some design aspects for the rest of the house, which was greatly appreciated. Overall Alisa is very knowledgeable, has extensive experience, and is easy to work with. We would use her again and we highly recommend her.

Alisa and Irma are the best. My husband and I had decided to downsize, but crowding our possessions into a smaller space had not been successful. Alisa and Irma to the rescue. Just by choosing the right colors for our walls, exchanging a too-large light fixture for one of the right scale, finding the perfect rug for our living room, and customizing bookcases to fit our space and accommodate our library, they pulled everything together. Efficient, creative, attentive to detail, careful about price, and lovely to work with, they produced a warm, inviting home. We are delighted.

Our family was living in another city while our house was being renovated and Alisa Hoffmann transformed what could have been a laborious process into an absolute breeze. She tuned into our wavelength immediately, and despite a busy practice was always engaged in the job. We knew what we wanted conceptually, and she had the resources to offer a range of interesting and relevant options for every decision. Over the course of the job our family encountered some unexpected challenges that at times caused us to be less focused than we would have liked to be, but Alisa never missed a beat. By email, text, phone, and suggestions posted on Houzz, we always had the sense that she was present and fully engaged. The finished job exceeded our expectations. Also, in this high end market, her prices were fair, and DSM billing always seemed scrupulous, which was reassuring since we were not on site most of the time. We moved in just two weeks ago, and we've already recommended Alisa to one of our new neighbors. A completely satisfying experience.

We approached Alisa at Design Set Match because we needed a complete interior design package including detailed specifications aligned with a budget for a cost- and design-conscious client. Design Set Match helped us by taking the huge set of product and material choices available on the market and whittling that list into a reasonable number of workable and acceptable choices. She made that easy. The result was spectacular. We were so thrilled to find an interior design firm that knew how to design things that actually work in the field. The contractor we worked with on that first engagement was ecstatic and said he was amazed by how he didn’t have to go chasing product substitutions. One of the things we like the most working with Alisa is her attention to making sure design layouts are appropriate and valuable to the homeowner/client. She does a great job helping our clients visualize what they will be getting. We found that initial experience working together unique and exceptional. I enjoy working with Alisa Hofmann of Design, Set, Match because she has a creative, yet direct, and focused approach to material selection. Design is extremely important to her but she is also interested in her clients and getting them involved in the process. She likes to work on the finer details of a project in person, so that all involved have a good understanding of each component of the design. On a recent large residential job, Alisa and her clients met with me in our showroom to work on 2 baths and a kitchen. The meeting was interactive and engaging, and her clients were very pleased with the selections. One of their concerns was whether to choose the same tile for both bathrooms. They were rather attached to the floor selection, so she suggested two different wall tiles. Also, each bath had an accent wall, which accentuated and distinguished each space, and worked harmoniously with the floor tile. Alisa’s ability to listen to her clients’ concerns and come up with the perfect solution in this situation is typical of the way she works, and I admire her for that. As the Vice President of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry), Alisa shows her commitment to the design community beyond her own business.. This organization of designers, contractors, and suppliers keeps its members informed of a variety of industry related issues and product innovations that directly effect the Design Build community.

Alisa is a real pleasure to work with. Dependable, reliable, practical and very knowledgeable. I'll add she is unflappable, great with workaround solutions, knows when to encourage and when to discourage. She recommended and helped me work with a terrific contractor. I've never worried about no-shows or incomplete work. She is a very good listener and extremely likable. I had my heart set on a few elements that were important to me in my condo remodel and she found a way to make them happen. She works easily with others.

We are working with Alisa from Design Set Match for our two-phased remodel, including a new laundry area and 2 bathrooms. She has been outstanding. We hired her firm for design schematics, through permit-ready plans, all the way through to construction management. 1) After speaking about a tight space with multiple designers, Alisa came up with the most ingenious idea, enabling us to fit two sinks and a tub and toilet in multiple private spaces to allow for large family use. 2) Alisa has allowed for lots of our own ideas and has graciously worked them into the plans. 3) When the bid process did not work out with a contractor Alisa had brought to us, she was more than willing to re-start the process with another contractor and has been able to build an effective relationship with him. 4) Despite a client with expensive taste and a smaller budget, Alisa was able to be flexible in material selection so that we understood where we wanted to splurge and where we could cut back. 5) Alisa has shown up on site week after week for construction management, advising us on choices we needed to make based on the realities we found in our older home during demolition. She has pushed when needed with subs, but in an extremely professional way; adjusted designs with a keen eye for detail when building realities required changes; advised us when choices needed to be made; in short, held our hands through the stresses of remodeling. We are about to embark on phase two of our remodel, but we are so thrilled with the results of phase 1. We could not have done it without Alisa's professional guidance. We worked with Alisa on remodeling two bathrooms in our house. We were incredibly pleased not only with her designs but also value add with the contractor throughout the process. Two areas to really highlight are: 1. Outstanding Design - We were incredibly impressed with how Alisa got to know us and our style and translate that into a design that really brought our vision of the bathroom project to life. Also, she was very helpful in advising us where to splurge and where to cut back on various finishes/design elements to get the most bang for our buck. 2. Advocate with the Contractor - Alisa brought us several great contractors, creating an attractive bid process which resulted in a good contract. More importantly, she was really our advocate with the contractor spotting things that we might never of picked up on. Alisa really does deserve credit in keeping us on time and on budget. There were a couple hiccups along the way that would be avoided if we did the project again (e.g. an issue with the sprinkler system) but Alisa being the problem solver she is, helped bring the issues to quick resolution without incurring major costs or delays. In conclusion, we were very happy with her work and absolutely would look to DSM for any future home remodeling projects.

Alisa is extremely creative AND efficient designer. She took the time to get to know our tastes, and then just took off with this knowledge and we really had a hard time choosing amongst the great selections she provided. If I had any criticism it might be that the products she recommended tended to be on the more expensive end. However, she came to these conclusions based on her observations of our preferences. And, if we ever felt that we would like a cheaper alternative, she always found one. Alisa has excellent professional connections in the Bay Area, and we easily sailed through (in several sessions), what would likely take people weeks and weeks, if they tried to do this on their own....

Alisa delivers what she has promised. She listens, makes decision-making easy and is patient with a busy person who is really clueless when it comes to anything design and remodel related. Alisa is an honest advocate who works with/recommends high quality people to complete your project.

We were approached just after the schematic design was completed to review and finish the development of a recent project. The schematic design was great, but it got even better with the final drawings and spec sheets we received to lock in our projects costs for our client. Alisa was extremely thorough and a pleasure to work with. She was extremely supportive and quick to respond to emails and messages. It was a pleasure to work with her and we have already brought her in on another project to help make it a success.

Alisa was very helpful in selecting appliances, contractors, choosing colors and every detail. She came up with a few designs that blew my mind-- I could have never foreseen my kitchen being transformed the way it was. And she guided the whole process. I had a very pleasant experience working with Alisa from Design Set Match. She is very thorough, asks the right questions, and doesn't jump to conclusions. Worked with her on an extensive kitchen remodel that affected a couple of rooms, relocated/removed walls, and adjusted an entire wall of windows. We hired Alisa and Design Set Match to assist us in the installation of a master on-suite bathroom. The bathroom did not exist before this project and Alisa helped us immensely with bringing it to fruition. Alisa proved her worth right out of the gate. Although we had an architect assist us with the initial design, Alisa had several suggested modifications to the basic layout and design that vastly improved upon the architect's concept. She then assisted us with selecting every detail for the bath, from tile to fixtures, and was invaluable in helping us achieve the explicit goal of keeping the new bathroom in the same style as the rest of the house. After selecting materials, Alisa helped us compile comprehensive lists of all the materials we needed to order and was a huge asset in getting everything to the house, intact and on time. Once construction started, she worked effectively with our general contractor to ensure that everything he did complied with plan specifications and met with her exacting eye for detail. Quite honestly, we don't know how we would have gotten this major renovation done without Alisa's help. I would recommend her highly to anyone seeking any kind of help in the construction process, from interior design and architecture to project planning and execution. She was worth every dime we spent on her services.

I recently Met Alisa Hofmann, owner and designer at Design Set Match. I was invited to bid a bath remodel in my neighborhood and my client hired Alisa to do the design and help with materials and finishes selections. From the start I was impressed at the level of detail that Alisa's plans showed... the plans were clear and easy to understand and even show the bath with before and after pictures ...very cool to be able to see the selected tile, Medicine chest, towel bars, cabinets, counters, etc before actual construction... as a builder, I have many years experience looking at, bidding and building Baths , Kitchens, Additions, decks etc.... how great for the client (untrained eye) to be able to see these finishes and make more informed decisions based on that info... I also was impressed with Alisa's soliciting of sub-contractor bids and collecting materials pricing from vendors... all though I did not use some of her subs I was able to use the material quotes that she provided and put my final bid together after normal business hours. I hired Alisa after a friend recommended I look at her work on her website. She designed a wheelchair-accessible bathroom for us so that we can stay in our house as my husband's health declines. We have a tiny, 1923 bathroom with nowhere to expand, and Alisa managed to maximize our space so that everything is safe and accessible. She guided me in picking out fixtures and finishes that are gorgeous as well as practical for someone with limited mobility. Her knowledge of the latest in universal design was invaluable. Alisa also kept me on track with the budget by pointing out where I could splurge on custom materials and where I could economize. Communication with her has been exceptionally easy. The best part is the result: a bathroom that is a joy to use.

Alisa has worked with me on many projects over the years, including my own home. She is always professional, thoughtful, thorough and pragmatic. When we built our vacation home in Lake Tahoe, Alisa designed the bathrooms. We had some objects that we had brought from Europe that we wanted to incorporate and we are thrilled with her fine creative work. Many designers can do something with items that they select, but it takes real talent to be able to mix what the client wants to use with new construction. Hats off to her creative talents. We were so pleased that after the house was built, we asked Alisa to come back and help us decorate the rest of the house. Needless to say, we give her rave reviews. We have learned that she has won several awards. We are not surprised, as her work is of the highest quality. Highly recommended.

I have worked with Alisa Hofman on several remodeling projects. She is a very valuable addition to the building team. Most recently I brought her in on a $45,000 kitchen remodel that had no plans, where I was the General Contractor. Alisa efficiently helped the owners refine their design and make material selections. Everyone involved was very happy with the results. She is prompt and reliable, has a great design sense, and follows through with her promises.

Alisa's work style is impeccable; she was able to quickly understand our needs and meet them. We had fired two architects before we found Alisa, who is one step short of an architect, only better; she can talk details with construction crew, design elements with clients and everything in between. In addition, Alisa was able to create visuals so we could see/ feel the spaces (work space, kitchen, bathroom), as well as describe what bolts were needed (!) After a kitchen/ bathroom remodel in the main house, a Mid-Century Modern, we brought her back to project manage the construction of our separate home offices in an accessory building at the back of our property: basically a small house from scratch. She designed the interior, worked with the architect and engineer, dealt with conflicting design parameters, helped us find contractors to bid for the work, and managed the whole process with the construction contractor's job foreman. During construction, she left us in peace to do our work (we are both home-based consultants who also travel quite a bit) and brought us in as appropriate to make decisions, saving us the headache of detailed daily management. We only wish we’d had her sooner on the original remodel, and can't recommend her highly enough.

Alisa provided critical help and guidance throughout our kitchen/bath/laundry remodel. Our old home’s spaces-built in 1908 and last updated in the 50’s—were outdated and out of sync with our family’s daily activities. She helped us to create spaces that meet our modern needs, but still fits with the feel of our 100 year-old plus house. The transition from new to old is seamless. The design works so well that you can’t always tell what was original and what was recently added. Alisa helped us find quality vendors and efficiently make the many decisions that accompany a major remodeling project. Her willingness to scout possibilities and her relationships with suppliers made our selection process much simpler and far less time consuming than it would have been without her help. From appliances to light fixtures, plumbing and hardware, she helped us find good quality products for reasonable prices. One of Alisa’s great strengths is listening carefully and understanding the priorities of the homeowner. In our case, Alisa was able to hear to our ideas and help channel them into the design so that the new spaces look like “our, ” but are far better designed than we could have done on our own. Our beautiful, new, light-filled kitchen is now the central gathering spot in our home. Our new bathroom functions much better than the old space, and our new laundry, while small in square footage, makes me smile each time I open the door and meets our needs exactly. Alisa’s patience, good humor and design expertise were essential to the success of our project and our sanity during many months of remodeling. I will definitely hire Alisa again when we undertake the next phase of updating our home.

Alisa Hoffman is a great designer! She has designed a Kitchen , Laundry Room, and Bathrooms for us. She listens and has great ideas to blend her suggestions with what I wanted. I have no regrets with letting Alisa do her thing and would hire her again for future remodels.

I owe the successful completion of my bathroom remodel to Alisa of Design Set Match. Her spot-on recommendations for materials and resources and her assistance in selecting cabinetry, flooring, lighting, and granite were invaluable. Although my bathroom is relatively small, it was my first experience with any type of remodeling, and Alisa helped me in every phase of the project from planning, to shopping, to following-up with vendors. Alisa worked on the interior design of a major home remodel done by her then employer, Winans Construction. This took place in 2007. Alisa not only did quality work herself, but was able to efficiently and effectively interface with both the architects as well as the construction staff. She is a pleasure to work with. In part, as a result of her excellent job, our house won an award for best major remodel in that year.

Alisa is very focused with her work. She is detailed and has created beautiful bathrooms and kitchens with our cabinetry. We are thrilled to be working with her.

I met with Alissa to discuss my plans for a design plan for a second kitchen in my house. I found her to be practical, honest and detail oriented. Even thought I did not end up working with her (because my project was very small and more of a do-it yourself type of plan, she explained), she gave me a lot of good ideas on how to save money and simplify my plan. I had planned to put in a lot of expensive custom made cupboards and a bar. She recommended that I use the shelving that was already in place and use a pre-fab bar rather than a custom made one. I just went to the store and found sliding glass doors to cover the shelves and a bar that folds into a table. It will save a good amount of money. I appreciated Alissa's suggestions and patience and would definitely hire her for a bigger project in the future.
