About one year ago we bought a ten year old 2 bedroom 2 bath condo in San Francisco as a city home. The building was ten years old and many of the fixtures were not high end. Of particular concern to us was that there were two bathtubs and no shower. So we started on a project to remodel the entire master bathroom and replace the tub with a shower. The selection of a contractor was very specific to us since our primary residence is 180 miles away, and we would be monitoring the project remotely, with only occasional visits. We were told about Gilmans and were pleased to learn about the quality of their work, the services they provided (including a designer/consultant) and, especially, how they kept in touch with frequent communication, a project portal, and pictures. While they were not the least expensive of the contractors we talked to, we felt the added benefits and work quality made up for that. We were not at all disappointed. A key part of this remodel was the tile work in the shower, which was very tricky since the tiles were small triangles with different surfaces. It came out great.

What a COMPLETE NIGHTMARE! I guess, I should have paid more attention to other negative reviews! After spending tons of time and effort designing my dream kitchen, I placed an order. The designer said that she would get back to me the next business day to give me an estimated date of delivery and then she disappeared… I had no idea when or even IF my kitchen would be made and delivered (since we are in the middle of COVID-19 situation). I had no idea if Gilman’s shut down – no one was answering the phones, if the cabinet manufacturer shut down, or if the designer just did not care. I waited for 11 days and then finally made a hard decision to go ahead and cancel my order. I emailed the designer (my only contact person within the company), no response. I emailed again asking for the confirmation that she got my email, she responded saying yes and that they would KEEP 25% of the TOTAL KITCHEN COST as a cancellation “fee.” I was extremely clear that I was not cancelling because I just changed my mind (more than anything, I wanted to get that kitchen!), I had to cancel due to the failed communication from the company side and the fact that I did not know if and when they would follow through with their obligation to deliver the kitchen. There is absolutely no excuse to keep a customer in the complete dark for that long! Now, for several days, the designer would not provide me with the contact information of the manager or the owner and I am left without an ability to even communicate with them. P.S. Will update this review once (or if) I get any response. UPDATE: Three months later, still no full refund. The owner has stopped responding.

We had a great experience from design through installation and final punch list with the Gilmans team. Nadia and David on the design shop were wonderful guides when it came to style, utility and budget. The installers were superb and great problem-solvers - special shoutout to Philip and Jason. After the installation, Gilmans stayed in touch to make sure we were satisfied and to complete the punch list (replace a scratched door, etc). Highly recommend!

We recently completed the remodel and installation of custom cabinets and we could not be happier with the end product. It was a bumpy road through some design challenges but in the end, the installers made this the best experience we had with any of our renovation vendors. Phil, Luis and Jason demonstrated a level of professionalism, responsiveness and attention to detail to deliver a beautiful final product. We purchased DeWils cabinets and the quality is beautiful. This onsite trio were a great representation of Gilmans and saved what was a challenging beginning of the renovation process.

I just finished a kitchen remodel that included replacement of our countertops. I visited Gilmans Kitchens + Baths to check out their resources. I found the perfect material and worked with David and Jessica to place the order. The project took much longer than I had anticipated because of a bay window installation, but the end result is amazing. David and Jessica were such a pleasure to work with and, at the end of it all, I am so pleased with our new kitchen and especially how gorgeous the countertops are. I highly recommend Gilmans to anyone planning a kitchen (or bathroom) remodel.

I’m honestly not even sure where to begin with this review, given the amount of issues we had working with Gilmans. We had singlehandedly the worst customer service I have ever experienced.
We had a large kitchen cabinet order that was misordered – several arrived the wrong size, including an entire section that was based on a design around our fridge and microwave fitting into them neatly. Gilmans admitted they did not even bother to check the dimensions of our appliances, despite me having asked them to multiple times and having our appliance store contact them directly to make sure everything was going to work well together. For one kitchen, we had a total of 9 re-orders of materials that were incorrect. We were previously upset at the cabinet manufacturer (that’s an entirely different review, and I still believe their quality is horrendous), however upon research, our architect and several other experts in the industry have said that for an order this screwed up, it can’t just be the manufacturer, it has to be how it was ordered and planned out (i.e. Gilmans).
To make matters worse, we had to threaten going to the California State Licensing Board to get them to fix these mistakes. Otherwise, their response was literally to “choose new appliances.” This was after coming to our house, admitting their mistake, promising to replace it with the proper sized cabinets, then calling a few days later to renege on this.
Another one of my favorite responses was in regards to the rollout shelf that ripped out of the side of the cabinet upon first use. Their response was to tell us to move it to another level (i.e. don’t deal with the ripped holes in the side of the cabinet, don’t address what caused it to rip out and perhaps prevent it from happening again).
For all these replacement orders, there was no rushing, there was no professional communication of when things would be delivered, there was no delivery to our home as soon as the replacements were into Gilmans, everything was at their convenience. We had an unfinished kitchen (where everything else was entirely done and finished) from March through today, when I am posting this review, in July). (By the way, there’s still one order outstanding that somehow disappeared and had to be reordered. Thankfully, it’s not an essential piece to our kitchen, as who knows when we’ll actually receive it – I’ve asked for an ETA a few times to silence). Myself, our contractor, or our interior designer had to fight for almost everything to get our kitchen the way it should have been. The customer was never right.
On top of all this, during the months (February – July) of dealing with the order issues we had, never once did we hear from the owner of Gilmans to address our concerns, apologize, or issue any sort of attempt at mediation to make us, his customers, feel at all better about the situation we were in. I personally emailed him a few times and received silence, despite the fact our rep told me he received my emails. Our interior designer also met with him in person about our kitchen problems and still, he didn’t bother to even send us a courtesy email. That is not the behavior of a company that cares about their customers or their customers’ experience.

Comment from Gilmans Kitchens and Baths:
Dear Caitlin,
I would like to apologize for your negative experience with Gilmans Kitchens and Baths. I definitely value client feedback and want all of our clients to be happy with their completed spaces. I do want to state that I, myself, am a little confused about the dissatisfaction you are expressing.
I will be the first to admit that we did make an error with one appliance and that some of your smaller parts came in damaged and needed to be reordered. As much as we try our best to make everything perfect for our clients, sometimes cabinet parts get damaged in transit, or a faulty part may accidentally pass QA, or, as you mentioned, an error could be made from a designer.
As a company, we pride ourselves on being honest and hold ourselves accountable for any errors we may make. You mentioned that we had a total of 9 re-orders, (that consisted of two panels, toe kick, a base panel and cabinets). I do want to point out that we never withheld or denied you the option to re-order these parts and pieces. Again, we correct our mistakes when we make them. I also want to point out that the toe kick was not our error, (as your floors were uneven) but we replaced that at no cost to you.
Your review also mentioned that we never bothered to check dimensions of your appliances and that our solution was to buy new appliances. I would like to clarify that we did make an error on your microwave specs, but on no other appliances. Most microwaves that go into a wall cabinet with an open shelf are smaller microwaves that are no deeper than 12”-15”. The microwave used was a countertop microwave that was 20” deep”. Once the mistake was realized, and you expressed your dissatisfaction, we offered some solutions to solve the problem.
1.We offered to purchase a brand new microwave, at no cost to you. One that would fit within the shelf.
2.We offered to order new wall cabinets that were deeper so that the appliance could fit. We pointed out that most designs don’t use wall cabinets any deeper than 15” because it is hard to place items and work on your countertops. With 20” deep wall cabinets, clients risk bumping their heads on the cabinets and will have the cabinets about 4”-5” away from their face.
In situations like this, we offer our clients different solutions because there is never just one way to solve a design challenge/error. We understood and valued that you were under time constraints, and the first proposed solution would help keep your project going. As we provide custom cabinetry, we explain to all our clients that all cabinets and parts are made-to-order and take 3-4 weeks to be made and delivered. As our manufacturers are located out of state, sometimes delivery may take an additional week.
It was mentioned that you reached out to me several times and that I had never responded. Although you included me in some group emails, I only received one email addressed to me. As I was out of town, I instructed your designer to reach out to you, for the sake of efficiency, to get the issues solved and to keep things moving. I would also like to point out that I never received any threat from you in regards to the California State Licensing Board. You had mentioned that your architect stated that we may be liable as your contractor, but we were and are not your contractor. I would also like to add that we were already working on solutions for you before you sent me that email. We value our clients, and would never wait to be threatened before trying to solve or correct any errors.
I understand that you did ask the Manufacturer for a 15% refund off your total order and stated that if that demand was not met, that you would post a negative review on all social media platforms, which you have done. It was explained to you by the designer at the beginning of the process that for custom cabinetry, companies do not offer refunds or exchanges, as everything is made-to-order, in fact it is stated on your contract proposal that you signed. It was also explained that if any errors occurred, that solutions would be offered or cabinetry replaced. All of which we have done.
At this point in time, your kitchen remodel is complete and we have replaced all parts that needed to be replaced, as well, as provided labor (at no cost to you) to reinstall some parts. We did make some mistakes, but we stayed accountable and corrected our mistakes, which I apologize for. It would be my hope that you would be able to reevaluate the service and quality you have received from Gilmans and our Manufacturer. We have good feedback from a majority of our clients and our ultimate goal is to make all of our clients happy.
Sincerely,
Larry Lowenthal

My son and his wife worked with Janis Manacsa on their bathroom remodel. The outcome of their bathroom was awesome so without hesitation, I took the plunge and contacted Janis about my long-overdue total bathroom redo. I’ve been looking at bathroom pictures online and in magazines for years; little did I know that someone who would really listen to my needs/taste was working nearby at Gilmans Kitchens & Baths in Mtn. View. Janis is very patient, thorough and a stickler for detail. Janis not only helped me pick out the perfect vanity and quartz counter top, she worked with me on tile and paint choices. She guided me through the whole process (I used an independent contractor) and followed up after the job was completed. The end result exceeded my expectations thanks to Janis!

We used Gilmans Design and Build Team for our kitchen remodel which entailed gutting the space and replacing everything but the floor. We also ordered our cabinets through Gilmans, and Olga did an excellent job designing their layout. In fact, everyone on the team was professional, pleasant to have around, and attentive. They made great suggestions, came through on all that they said they would do, and cleaned up impeccably at the end of each day and at the end of the job. They finished in 14 weeks (the estimate was for 10) and on budget; no surprises. All the work was first rate, with much attention paid to detail. I am delighted with my new kitchen (unfortunately it hasn't made me a better cook!) and highly recommend Gilmans. They were truly a delight to work with and made what we expected to be an ordeal an adventure. When I'm ready to remodel my bathroom, I will definitely call on them.
