Lincoln, MA Landscape Architects and Designers
As a Landscape Architect Elizabeth Dudley is closely allied to the ideals of Jens Jensen, whose landscape designs articulate a belief in the strong ties to not only the land, but the local native landscapes where one lives. Robert E. Grese in his essay on Jens Jensen “The Landscape Architect as Conservationist” in the volume Midwestern Landscape Architecture, edited by William H. Tishler, writes of Jensen's Danish background with its celebration of the seasons and legends and mysteries of the land and spirits. Jensen believed that maintaining a vital connection with the land is essential for a healthy society. At best, our gardens reflect the natural surrounds of one’s immediate locale and bridge the connections between the earth and our spiritual health. The natural philosopher, E.O. Wilson writes that only in the last moment, in terms of the scale of human history, has the idea prevailed that people could flourish apart from the rest of the living world. Wilson has coined a term, biophilia, to describe our attachment to the earth, one that we still carry as part of our evolution from nature despite the intrusions of modern life. Nature persists in our hearts, in our souls and in our heads. It is because of biophilia that we are drawn to the land and labor to connect with it: our connection with nature is based in the very fiber of our being. In her book “The Healing Garden” Gay Search notes that ‘it’s interesting that when people are learning relaxation techniques that involve visualization, the place they most often conjure up is a garden or the countryside. Some choose the seaside initially but don’t stay with it for long while those who chose a garden do.”

ABOUT THE STUDIO Studio B Designworks, LLC was formed in 2008 by landscape designer, artist, and landscape steward, Stephen Bagley. Combining a lifetime of creative pursuits in art and design with his love for the outdoors, Stephen has built a residential landscape design practice which relies on a powerful collaborative process between clients, like-minded artisans, craftsmen, architects, designers, environmental agencies and other construction professionals. Built on a foundation of hands-on construction experience, broad horticultural knowledge and a far reaching professional network formed over the span of nearly two decades, his creative vision comes to life through successful team building and an on-going dialogue with his clients and affiliates. Mike began testing the waters of the landscape maintenance and at age of nine years old, when he began mowing the lawn and manicuring the grounds of his parents and grandparents. When mike reached the age of twelve, he became very interested in how to grow and tend to vegetables. This craft was taught to Mike by his grandfather, whom was a master gardener (from Italy). Mike continued to maintain family members living close by until the age of 14. Having very open-minded parents, and being inspired by the craft of landscape design and construction, Mike decided to redesign the landscapes of his parents and grandparents. After Mike was finished, the neighborhood became so impressed, that Mike began to immediately receive requests from the community. Over the next year and one half, Mike grew to know, what he was destined for. In 1981, Mike officially opened for business and launched "Mike's Landscaping Co." This was the major stepping stone of emergence for one of the most sought after and highly awarded landscape design companies in the country. We thank our loyal and gracious customers for our continued growth and success.
I started Gardens by Mary twelve years ago to share my passion for gardening, and to help others appreciate the value of well planned landscapes. A common sense, no-nonsense, and unpretentious approach in addressing each unique situation puts clients at ease as we work collaboratively in identifying priorities and preferences. With an engineering, business management, customer service, and project management background you will receive creative, comprehensive solutions and results. As a designer, and with the eye of an artist and photographer, I see plants as the paints on a palette. Form, balance, color, texture, size, and creating an emotional response to the space are all part of the mix when creating or renovating gardens and landscapes. I believe it is important to develop landscapes with interest in all seasons. Each design is unique to the specific tastes and preferences of the client and the conditions at their property. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to helping you find beautiful solutions for your gardens and landscapes.

The LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROCESS usually consists of the following phases: PRELIMINARY CONSULTATION - Initial discussions with client to clarify goals. PROPERTY ANALYSIS- Existing site conditions such as topography, wind, light, vegetation, and sightlines are reviewed. Base materials might include building and plot plans, septic system 'as-builts', & any other site related information. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT - A preliminary layout is prepared using rough, broad brush sketches to stimulate discussion of opportunities as well as constraints. Studies are done with close attention to the integration of interior and exterior space. Pathways, parking, entry, play, views & screening are among the many issues which arise. The designer often interfaces with the architect in this phase. MASTER PLAN - The master plan is a concept plan which includes walkways & parking, paving & wall materials, fencing, lighting, as well as a planting plan and detailed plant list. Using this document, the client & designer have a basis for determination of a budget as well as construction phasing. PROCUREMENT OF CONTRACTORS - The designer is able to assist clients in the selection of qualified contractors. PLANT SELECTION - It is strongly suggested that the designer select and place all plant materials. Healthy plants and proper planting practices greatly improve the success of any landscape. SUPERVISION OF SITE WORK- Site visits and supervision of work is separate and shall be billed at an hourly rate. FOLLOW UP INSPECTION - During this visit, a punch list is made and future phasing may be discussed.
