“Sometimes it takes experiencing work being done rte wrong way to know when & how to do it the right way is. Sad to say, we had already paid in full for a complete design from another firm, and it was not until we went to pull permits that we learned our pavilion was not allowed. Working with Montgomery Robbins was a completely different experience. They saw us through the entire design + build process, and the result is a backyard oasis we absolutely love retreating to. My wife and I are in professions where it was critical we could trust the people leading our project as we could not be involved in the day to day oversight. My wife, who is in finance, and I were impressed with the level of detail and precision in the financial tools used throughout the design process. The consistency in their communication cadence helped us wrap our heads around the full scope of the investment early on, so we were never blindsided by the bids that came in and we always knew what we were being billed for. He provided a detailed layout showing how our house is positioned in relation to sun exposure and selected plants that thrive in those conditions. Henry worked diligently to create a design that not only met our needs but also stayed within our budget. Additionally, he ensured our front landscaping complied with County requirements to qualify for the lawn conversion program. “We worked with the team on a full redesign of our front and side gardens. It entailed taking a sloping dirt lot and some stonework out and restructuring the slope into terraces. We started with an idea of a rock wall — we have three across the garden that were hand built by their mason. Additionally, Mariposa put in a rock-walled raised bed for lettuces and other vegetables. There are areas within the garden — butterfly garden, song bird sanctuary, pollinators — along with fruit trees. We weren’t expecting but are happy with the the “edible mess” of our front yard. Most of the plants can be eaten or used by us. It will need a bit of maintaining as seasonal plants like lettuces or chard go off, but we love the stone work and the overall feel of the garden. Be clear in what you want and expect (there was a point I was told “we kind of do what we want”) so if you DO or DON’T want a plant, speak up. Also, if your house is old, you may encounter problems with sewage, electrical, or water lines. Mariposa encountered all three (I think); not unusual, but you will have to update your lines as necessary to bring them to code. That’s not the gardener’s issue, it’s an old house issue that any major landscaping is likely to encounter.”
