Stroke of Nature Landscape Design
Patio Designers in Palo Alto
Average rating: 5 out of 5 starsNovember 18, 2025
“We worked with David on our landscaping redesign - a complete refresh after 30 years. He’s excellent to work with, creative, practical, and listens to what you want to accomplish. Our design process was quite smooth and his organized approach (he identified all steps of his process in advance) lets you know what’s next and how he will approach your project. He even assisted in suggesting some contractors and reviewing bids to ensure we were getting good quotes. We’re now in the implementation stage and will be engaging David to help us realize his beautiful design. I highly recommend Stroke of Nature for your landscaping project.”

“Karen was our designer for a very large, full redesign of our Los Gatos, California garden. She carefully listened to our wishes and designed them into her detailed plan. One example is that in her plant choices, she created a beautiful butterfly/hummingbird area right down to selecting the specific color schemes we requested. She did all of this while at the same time creating an open and sunlit but private sanctuary. In addition, Karen was always available to come to the job site when we asked to answer questions and make in-the-field modifications. Most importantly, Karen is a lovely, polite, and calm person and is extremely easy to work with.”

“Kristin is a warm, delightful, and talented designer. We had lost a number of beautiful old oak trees in winter storms, and not only did she help us find better replacements but she is helping us update and fill in our once beautiful yard, with low water plants and other options . We appreciate her skill and patience. Highly recommend her!”

Landscape Architect or Designer FAQs
The duration of a patio design project can vary widely depending on the scale and complexity of the project, weather conditions, and the availability of materials and labor. Smaller projects might take a few weeks, while larger, more intricate designs can take several months. A reputable patio designer will provide you with a projected timeline upfront and keep you informed of any changes.
Patio designers stay abreast of the latest materials and design trends through continual education, industry publications, and networking. They consider factors such as durability, maintenance, local climate, and your personal style to recommend the best materials for your project. Sustainability, outdoor living, and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions are currently popular trends in patio design.
Before meeting with a patio designer, homeowners should gather inspiration photos, establish a budget, and consider how they intend to use the space (e.g., entertaining, relaxation, dining). Itʼs also helpful to identify any specific features you desire, like a fire pit or outdoor kitchen. Clear communication of your needs and preferences helps ensure the success of your project.
Patio designers are skilled in navigating challenges such as spatial constraints, zoning restrictions, and budget limitations. They leverage creative solutions and strategic planning to overcome obstacles, ensuring the project stays on track. Open communication between the homeowner and designer is critical for addressing issues promptly as they arise.
Outdoor lighting not only enhances the ambiance of a patio but also ensures safety and functionality after dark. Designers recommend incorporating a mix of task, ambient, and accent lighting. Solar-powered and LED lights are popular for their efficiency and sustainability. Proper placement and consideration of light intensity are crucial to avoid glare and create a welcoming atmosphere.
Sustainability in patio design is achieved through the selection of eco-friendly materials, native plants that require less water, and the incorporation of green technologies like rainwater harvesting systems. Designers also consider the orientation of the patio to maximize natural light and warmth while minimizing exposure to harsh elements. This approach not only benefits the environment but can also lead to long-term cost savings for homeowners.
